Hello there.
Its my daring to create planted paradise for Stendker discus.
Im 40 and enough with neon fish.
I hope my english language skills dont scare You off and somethink from all of that will be taken as helpfull.
Story of big restart,first step:

I move my 5ft 105gal tank to darkest corner (emty)
And start to create Pro substrat: 1st. layer_Volcano ProScape 2x9L + biobacterial powder
2nd. layer _TropicaPlantGrowth
3rd. layer_inert gravel 2-3mm
Its 11:58p.m. in Riga that means tomorrow I'll start planting jobs.

Im back.Main think :all planted tank progress must be without any haste.
Planted works :I was searching in net work information for a long time about plants who can stay and thriwe in 28'C-30'C/82'F-86'F and I even have a result_my list:
1.background_Valisneria Spiralis (stright)Tiger 25roots
2.background middle main focus_Echinodorus Blehery 2roots
3.backround_Cryptocaryne Petchi 15roots and right background corner Cryptocaryne Wisli 15roots
4.Cryptocaryne Wendtii Geen 50roots,Cryptocaryne Wendtii Brown20-30roots
( Tropica123grow up was taken and scares me allmoust till panic-such little one roots - impossible to count)
5.front carpet plant_Cryptocaryne Parva approx.19x5roots
9011690117

I'm using dry planting (follow world aquascape champion Oliver Knott method)http://www.pbase.com/plantella/xxlarge_tank

It was restart so i has old bioloaded filter Eheim 2128th 1050L/277gph and old water 80L/21g was used (pic.)

Is it a styrofoam custom made?
Is it going to be a juwie growout tank or adult discus display tank?

Lets go:tank was restarted on first minute of 4th.september 2015.
Filter:Eheim 2128th 1050L/277gph its 3.2tank in h.(old filter with good bacterial capacity)
First waterchange after 21h=80L/21gal/24% white bacterial cloudiness are dissapered.(Tetra Bactozym 10$ in JBL volcano)
Like I said before Im using O.Knott method and it is:first 14days waterchanges every 3rd day 15%/50L/13gal than 20%weekly
Lights ON :first 2weeks/from 04.sept-17.sept/for six hours
from 3rd week/18.sept.+2h=8hours=2:00p.m-10:00pm than nightlight from 9:30-8:00a.m.
What's going on in these days with plants:
1.Valisneria Spiralis Tiger stop mortify(15%) and even start growing =7new healthy roots(1i)
2.Echinodorus Blehreri some leafs get brown and die off but have 5new salatgreen leafs
3.Cryptocaryne Pechi and Wisly dont lose any leaf and looks greate (it is slow growers)
4.Cryptocaryne Wendtii Green = great ,looks even bigger (loose just few leafs from hundred)
5.Cryptocaryne Brown (in a planting day all was a green)=leafs start to chenge colour! becomes brown-lightly healthy brown
6.Cryptocaryne Parva-carpet plant = not established yet but looks great under night light -in darkgreen colour, just few leafs loosed from a hundred.
Water are little brown coloured even after 14days/5wch x50L/13gal (I think its JBL volcano and TropicaPlantGrowth)
That 5stones are from my collection:every stone and inert gravel was carefully boiled and shower washed !
to be continued...

Good start. I always use caution with these type of substrates, but I have seen this particular substrate, and it is much finer than your regular run of the mill gravel. I wish you success raising out discus in this tank. Good luck.

Agree. If still time, replace with sand if you want substrate. May be a hassle but you'll be glad later.

If you have done 3 x 25% WC in one week that's not equal to 75% weekly WC.The WC math doesn't work that way.

P.s. Expecting your pics from stendkers

Dhavalsp
03-02-2016, 02:04 PM
Tank looks nice...what are you using for filtration? 30 % weekly might be a problem but doable if you reduce the feeding (which will affect growth), heavy filtration and extra cautiousness - turning the filter off during feeding and maintaining intake filter.

genuine advice would be to do 50% WC every other day till they hit like 5.5 which will take about 2-4 months on your feeding and then gradually decrease WC while closely monitoring how the fish are reacting to the change in schedule. As far as their memory, I think they eventually start loving water changes, my fish are always under the water stream flow in the tank during WC and I use water from the tap and dechlorinate it in the tank.

Looking forward to see some update pics. good luck!

Nice looking discus Juris.Good luck with them.
From what you wrote in your post I have a remark on your filter flow rate. 250 gph is too low for a >100 gallon tank.
I would try putting the second one as a backup.
Do you have decent surface movement (oxygen)with this flow rate or at least an airstone in the tank?

Also if you can improve your WC regime.
It would be better and easier for you maybe if you do 2 x 70% weekly and cleaner water for your Discus instead of doing 15% every day.

tank is really coming a long OP. ill admit I figured you would wind up with stunted discus trying to grow them out in a planted tank, and that you would fail like many before you have done. But the fish and tank look really good. the plants look great, especially the placement of the jungle val. crypts are getting really bushy

Thank You for incoming replies.
Fish was pretty expensive for my wallet so I decide: if didnt have enough money ,i must do my best to get bigger and more expensive discusfish.Water smells good ,are clean, allways all food are eaten all in 2minutes.Of course I have all notes about all week waterworks.
In that 80days all fish was fed three times a day 1pm,5pm and 8pm.Results on hand:
biggest from 9cm grow up till 12+/4.7i (=+3cm/1.2i)
smallest from 6.5cm grow up till 10+/3.9i(=+3.5cm/1.4i)
Some brown algea still exist on val.and crypts.
pH are too high at 7.8 so next step in program:RO5-75 it will lover pH and brown algea.
All pics. was take by Sony mobile so arent good but fish are looking realy good.brilliant Turquoise looks great under night light but its just question of time and they will be looking good when reach 14cm/5.5i size.Biggest Blood Pigion Red looks cool today.97057

Are you using pressurized CO2? I didn't see it mentioned. I would highly recommend it for a planted tank.

Filip
05-06-2016, 09:32 AM
Nice fish Juris. So far so good .
I hope you will win over the brown algae . Ancistrus fish are known to eat this kind of algae, you can try them out.

Rapture , it's still too early to evaluate the final outcome of the fish. 1 inch growth in 3 months its not considered a big succes by experienced discus keepers.

William, while co2 does wonders for plants it can compromise the discus growth and health, so I would not reccomend it at least until discus are full grown ( +18 months age ).

What do you think made this planted tank a successful grow out tank compared to other planted tanks where the fish end up stunted?

1) Food:every time all cutted pieces are eaten for 100% in 2min.! No piece fall down till gravel (ofcourse Stenker Good Heart play a main role)
2) Water changes: in first 11weks 100%-150%weekly WCH but biggest was ''only'' 36% in change.(tank have own bio balance-and I disagree with USA method as 80_100% daily WCH)
3) Most important thing: once a week Im cleaning gravel (Im take out 5mm up layer and carefully wash in bucket, than replace back
Big tank its important, simpliest water plants but a lot in a start (Oliver Knott method-world aquascape champion)
And T=28.9'C/84F' not more (if fish are above 5cm/2) My tank get oxigen only from surface agetation !

''it's still too early to evaluate the final outcome of the fish. 1 inch growth in 3 months its not considered a big succes by experienced discus keepers.''
I agree some fish are still at 11cm/4.3 ...BUT tank its closed eco system, every fish have only 30L/8gal and more than inch in 80days its like story about Chinese chicken for Mcd:3kg/6lb in few monthes!

Juris,
Having white foam in the canister filter that has not been changed for 10 months its the worst you can do for your discus fish .
If you use it in canister it has to be replaced at least once a month , otherwise its just a food for pathogens and diseases .
And the slime and stink you saw on the floss is not made from the Nitro bacteria but from unwanted heterotrophic bacteria that we constantly fight against with cleaning , siphoning and water changing .

Yes , do that Juris buy new and replace them at least monthly .
Having a prefilter sponge on your intake of the canister is also a great idea .
It will greatly reduce the amount of gunk in your canister filter materials . But you will have to take it out of aquarium and clean it mannualy at least once a week .
You will be amazed by the amount of gunk and debris a prefilter sponge can collect in just a couple of days .

Fish are cold blooded, when the fish are ready to eat she just start eating.
Black Angel wont eat for 43days !Now Black Angel are eating goog and looks just ideal (red eyes, colourfull without any emaciated place on body)
Yes,after 90 days without food I was worried about that fish, try to change more water daily (42%,30%,27%,15%,18%,27%-CHECK RECORDS) ,heat up till 29.1'C/84.4'F-without any resolts!
Blue Diamond in that 129days lost approx. 1.5cm/0.6'-right now fish eats good (x73days)and looks normal.I'll look at him carefully and if fish after 90days get some extra CM-I will report it.
Eyes are red and look good(arent telescopic),stomack are getting full as after 'breakfast' as well after supper.
I was searching any reports on network...but 129days-its a first place.

HI Juris,

"Blue Diamond in that 129days lost approx. 1.5cm/0.6'-"

are you saying that the fish reduced in size? or did you mean that it grew at a slower rate, that is, grew only xx cm which was 1.5 cm less than average expected growth rate for that period(and age). I see from your thread that you keep thorough record but I was just curious about fish getting smaller due to not eating.

Also, please post some pics, curious to see how they look now.

''lost 1.5cm'' I mean in that time all others get extra +2.2cm till 2.7cm but Blue Diamond just +1cm!
I'll try to get some good pic, fishes look colourfull -plants are bad...

Its 1.may.30days gone since my last update.
Lots of work to do: i must suck out all gravel till glass but with my little 3/4 'piton' it was ''mission impossible''.
With 40% WCH only 8lbs gravel was out of tank, reason: too big vulcanic JBL stones and 'piton' just choke.
So taday I bought '1' inch ...and that is a real 'piton'.
1inch hose only give up when meet with Cryptocaryne roots.
I get my 8 black clay pot...that is handmade wonder-very very attractive.
to be continued...
