HI all,
Hope everyone is well! I wanted to share an idea I am kicking around for a project here. We have a photosection here on the forum that is quite extensive and has experts that mentor and help with photography issues and learning. Some of you may know I am hobby photographer and have been for years and as such I have collected a fair share of camera gear over the years. I was thinking wouldn't it be cool to take one of my camera setups and box it up to send out to a forum member...They would use, take pics of their tank, maybe share a few outdoor shot, petshots etc. They'd then box it up and send it to the next on the list. The idea being to see how many places we can send this camera.

The camera I am considering is an older Pentax Digital SLR. ..Its a *ist DS .. 6 megapixel camera. I would probably send it wiith a 28-80 Autofocus lens. The camera itself is extremely easy to use, but you can still be creative with it. It was one of the first Dslr's that pentax came out with having a release year of 2004! Thats right 2004 and its still takes great pictures. Uses 2 Gb Sd cards (I will provide)

Whats really nice about this camera is it has very easy controls, and runs on 4 AA batteries...so no special battery or charger needed. It has a built in pop up flash and several modes. At 6.1 Mp you won't be making 20X30 inch enlargements but 8X10 is fine. and for a computer screen, website or forum you really don't need more in most cases.

Why would I do this? One reason is because it would be a really cool project to follow here. I've not seen similar done elsewhere with a camera, though it probably has been. Another reason is because I have a strong like for old camera gear, hate to see something perfectly usable get tossed aside because technology has moved on. Yet another reason is because I think a bunch of you out there would get a kick out of playing with this old camera and may learn a bit about it and photography in general.

So what do you think? I'm still working out the details but at the moment the only thing that the participants would be required to pay is the shipping... each person on the list would pay the shipping to them from the one before. I think we could do that for under $10 in the USA, and $15-$20 internationally. You would have the camera for a few days and then pack it safely and send it out. I can probably make a packing jacket for it that you can re-use. Not sure what else at this point this idea would entail.

And maybe I'll be able to post a decent pic of my fish - my photos are poor quality compared the ones y'all post regularly. I even have a tripod in the closet that I will break out to use with that camera when it's my turn. The tripod doesn't work so well with an iPhone..haha :)

A fun idea, Al.
One thing that comes to mind is people who don't have cameras and take pics with your loaner, they might not have any real way to process the images. Cards are pretty cheap now so if they want to mail a card with their images to one of us we could process them and get them back to the photographer so they could post them. We could designate "developers" for each region to cut down on mailing costs.
I know most computers come with some sort of photo program, but non photographers may just not want to bother with the downloading etc. This could be a developing service.

Stan thats very doable if needed. This particular camera works on the old style 2 gb SD card. These are very inexpensive on ebay. I have a bunch of them. I think theres a firmware upgrade that came out that lets you use the high capacity sdhc cards but I havent run it on the camera yet....I may before we send it out.

Another option is a brief tutorial on "gimp" . Because these images are in the range of 5-6 mp ..you really just to resize them and save..I havent tried yet but the online photo resizers will probably work too...so we have alot of options depending on the personal preferences of the user.

Looks like we have quite a few interested people.Great to see! I guess its a go then. I will start the Camera Marathon off by sending the Camera off to Pat in Florida this week.. My only request is that if you agree to participate you must be serious about it. This is older gear but it still is good gear and needs to be well taken care of...I will include Tips on its use, a sturdy case to protect it. I will also include a link to a website that will allow you to access the instruction manual ( you should at least briefly look at this). You are making a commitment to the people involved here and to the forum that you will take your pictures and send the camera out to the next person on the list. You should try and do this within 2-3 days of receiving the camera. I will post the List those on the project.. The Person who receives the camera is the person who is responsible for the shipping fees to them. Its your only cost in this. You need not send it with AA batteries unless you want to. By participating you agree to pay the shipping from the person before you to you..It will be Priority mail. The way this works is the person that has the camera will contact you with a paypal email address to send the shipping funds and will give you the shipping amount.. No CODS...no first class. The person receiving will then have 2 days to pay the shipping fees. If you don't pay in that time we move on the next person on the list.

I really want to see how many people we can get involved and how many "miles" we can put on this camera.

Now it occurred to me that I should have some checks and balances here to keep it so we don't have someone registering just to walk away with a camera on us. So Lets make it you need to have been a member for at least 4 months and have 150 posts. If you are new here, you should be able to participate here that much in the next few months demonstrate that you are part of the community. This is going to be a long term project I hope so theres plenty of time to participate. Of course I can waive the minimum requirements if I know you from the forum or Aquaticsuppliers.com customer list.:)

You do not need to currently have Discus to participate.

Any questions?

Sounds really cool!!!

Quick question or suggestion... If we are all sending the same item, etc... Can't we just all agree to use one of the post office, pre-paid boxes or whatever they are called, they have small medium large boxes of different sizes. That would keep the shipping pretty much set, I believe these ship anywhere across the US at once price...

Also, if that is the case, wouldn't it work that as you ship to the next person that is the fee so to speak, so there is no need for paypal and paying back? For instance, say it is $15... Al ships to Pat, he pays $15, she ships to me for instance she pays the $15, I ship to blank and pay the $15 so we are all just paying that $15 at the post office and covering the cost, until the end the last person ships back to Al again paying the final $15 and the process is complete...

Maybe I missing something here, but seems to work the same way without the payback method...

Correct me if I am wrong...

brewmaster15
02-09-2016, 02:00 PM
Phil,
I'll look into the idea on the same box when I pack Pats up...if we can do that it would be easier.

The second idea....

Also, if that is the case, wouldn't it work that as you ship to the next person that is the fee so to speak, so there is no need for paypal and paying back? For instance, say it is $15... If they have to pay the shipping to them, it helps filter. The other reason was because I hope we get international takers... if so that would drive up the shipping bit... These don't necessary rule out your suggestion, just something we should consider.
Thanks,
al

This Idea is now an official Project here. I have just wrapped up the camera and some gear and packed it off to Pat. Looking at the shipping options for what I was sending it made sense tp go with the USPS priority Flat rate Medium size box. Everything fit perfect and the boxes are available at all post offices here in the USA. They can also be used for international..but thats pricey. As it is my initial hopes of doing this for around $10 didnt pan out. Shipping with $200 insurance was $16.95 ( this is the value of the gear I have sent by current Market prices) .I was initially only going to send a camera and small lens. I've since upgraded that..

heres what I have sent
pentax DSLR *IST DS 6.1 MP camera
auto focus Lens SMC 18-55 mm F3.5-5.6 AL with Uv filter as a protector and its caps.
manual focus 50 mm prime F2.0 SMC
Nissen Bounce flash works well with the camera and AF lens
3 each 2 GB SD cards
1 USB SD card Reader
Pack of lens Tissue
small bottle of lens cleaner liquid
1 cleaning cloth.
Awesome rugged cushioned and protective water proof case

also Pat .. The Camera and Flash have batteries.

So there you have it everyone.

When Pat get the camera , friday I am guessing, she can post her impressions and maybe some pics soon after.:)

The manual can be found here..

http://www.ricoh-imaging.co.jp/english/support/man-pdf/istds.pdf

One Note..
There is a trick to using manual lens like the 50mm F2.0 I sent. Pentax cameras are backwards compatible with most their lens unlike other mfgs. But because there are no contacts for the lens to communicate with the camera on exposure you have to use whats called stop down metering.. to do so is not hard, on IST DS you set the camera dial to "M" and compose the picture. Before taking the picture theres a Button labeled AE-L press that and sets the camera to the right exposure. Take the picture. Because of this feature we can use lens that go back to the 60s with Pentax. This process is only for the smaller manual 50mm I sent the AF lens works fine in mindless mode..I mean green mode.:bandana:

lastly, when you get this system, don't compare it to what you use today. This camera was one of the first mainstream Dslrs out there and alot of technology has changed in the last decade. At the time it came out it was a pretty cool camera. Close enough to film cameras in operation and looks to make it easy for people to make the jump. Ironically though as you use it, you may realize that though our cameras have better sensors, more functions, more this and that, that really alls you need to take a good picture is not the most expensive high end technological wonder of the second... but just a camera capable of recording the moment.

Pat the camera is capable of wireless flash, see page 153-158 of the manual. However it was only with a particular pentax flash at the time the camera came out. Whether it will work with more modern flashes I do not know. Certainly something to play around with. What I have done with it is to use wireless flash triggers with the camera and older flashes.. These are not expensive on ebay and work fine.

I sent the particular flash I did as it should work well if angled to the ceiling and bounced into a fishtank from the top...hint hint:)

I will mention this just in case anyone needs to be clear on this. On the pictures Al posted, you can see that on the lens itself there is an orange dot. There is also an orange dot on the camera body itself. When you release either lens from the body (a small button by Al's finger in the pic showing the mount), you re-attach a lens by lining up the orange dots and turning the lens until you hear a click (Al, I'm assuming there's a click?). Do not try to force turn the lens in to the mount if it is not flush or on an angle. It sounds more complicated than it is, but simply line up the dots and turn gently and you will be fine :)

So the camera arrived today in perfect condition. So first thing I do is changed the mode from auto to Aperture Priority and mounted the speed light and took this. Al, is there a way to lock the speed light to the shoebox?

Oops, to much light.

94409

then removed the speed light and went outside and took this

and this (my gypsy dog)

Came back inside and read the manual on how to change the aperture. Changed it from F8.0 to F4.5 which is the max, mounted the speed light and took this

Since too much light.
94412

Removed the speedlight, left the aperture alone and took this. Still not quite enough light so will play a bit tonight. You can see a bit of noise in the photos. The tank is not brightly lite so the auto focus is have a hard time nailing the focus.

Cool Pat. I love that you are posting all kinds of pics, at the end of the day, that is what this project is encouraging to do.

I will do a write up on how to upload pics from the camera soon, however, would you mind chiming in on how you found the process? Was it very straight forward? Was it any different from your current uploading of pics?

Lastly, to all, again, post as many pics as you want, I will start a gallery for the pics per person, BUT, I would love it if everyone could choose one specific one after they are done with their challenge and let me know which that is. I have a cool little surprise in regards to that :)

Yeah, just a small play by play on how the process works. Not overly detailed. When I get the camera I will be able to do a full step by step on how to do everything. I actually like the 1600 ISO because it almost gives it this film noise quality

Yes there will be a list...its basically whats here right now in this thread...

HI Eric,
Pat will send you a Pm with her paypal address for the shipping cost and you can provide her the shipping address then. When she ships it she will provide the tracking info to you.

All...I think if we shoot for sending the camera out on a Monday or Tues it would be best, as that way it will arrive before the weekend, giving the receiver the weekend to play with it. Please remember to ship it as I have documented... Use a flat rate medium size box with $200 insurance. Keep the tracking information ...it will be on your USPS receipt.

thanks everyone, have fun!:)

Al, as far as I am concerned your little camera is as fully capability of taking very nice pictures as my Nikon. It is easy to use, has all the basic controls you could want. I did not try it in auto mode (and perhaps should have) but got some pretty good pictures with what I did. Pat you're getting some great pics with the camera.

I was interested in this when I first saw the thread, but no that I see it is using an old asahi lens I am more interested! I shoot with a Panasonic GH2, but have two adapters, one for old Canon FD lenses, and the other for the old Pentax M43 lenses. One of my favorite lenses is a nearly 60 year old Asahi (pentax) 200mm lens with clickless aperture. It produces some of the most beautiful colors ever, and is very sharp. Anyways, If I can be added to the list it would be great, but I am in Japan, so it will be a bit pricey to ship, maybe if it gets to alaska first, it would be a bit less pricey ;)

Awesome, and yes that is the lens. Their was a 4.0 I believe that looks the same, but the 5.6 is said to be the one to get, and I am inclined to agree. Very beautiful lens, and I love the slender little light weight body compared to the cannon 200mm lenses. I paid $10 at a used shop here in amazing condition, and other than it's low light limitations, it is on par with my $1300 Voitlander lens (paid $750 ;) ) I also have a 50 mm f1.8 asahi which has a charm all of it's own. I think I have posted a few pics of my fish using it. It is perfect for spying on colored up fish during spawns or aggression from across the room, a bit of the retro color on it, but very sharp and easy enough to adjust with software.

More the former than the later Ricardo. John sent me the plans and the tops of the racks are permanently pre-built. The individual tops are bolted together and the legs bolted on. One the pre-build is done, the sections are unbolted and the legs removed for temporary storage before transfer to the show sight.

LOL - Beware the Pac-mera! No, it's fine. Just a super hectic week for me :) The camera arrived safe, worked absolutely fine, and no settings have been changed. It's going out the exact same way I got it. I put new double-A's in it so it's ready for its next host on its journey across the country. I took some great shots, but it did not magically transform my tank and fish into show-stoppers, as I had hoped. Guess it's back to good old elbow-grease. But I did get some good shots, will post them tonight after I sift through them for the best ones.

So, next guy on the list - send me a PM, give me your complete address please, and I will ship it out today. :)

Thank you for the opportunity to use a real camera, AL, and to be a part of this really cool collective journey!!

For those that know what "Raw" files are
..this camera will take "Raw"images .See pgs 31,98,99 of the manual. However the size of the Sd card is so small you wont fit very many images on it. My suggestion is use the best quality jpeg setting if you are unsure or unfamiliar. All the cameras setting are accessible thru a simplified menu so you can easily try both .

Lol, didn't mean to open a Raw can of worms ;) But since it's open, anyone that wants to try their hand at RAW you also
need special software to handle the RAW files. FastStone is one of the free ones I have been using lately, but there are others
which are better, just can't remember the names and don't have them anymore.

Simplified, RAW has much more info and lets you do much more adjusting after the photo has been taken than a standard JPEG
It doesn't necessarily amount to a better picture though, and is not necessary for allot of shots. It shines best in shots where you have
an underexposed subject in the foreground with say a nice sunset in the background, or even just a nice sky. RAW will let you pull much
more light out of the shadows than a standard JPEG. There is definitely more potential for color manipulation too.

P.S. cool to know the option is there with this camera Al. If it comes my way I may throw a bit of a larger memory card in for it's future
travels. I have allot of cheaper class 10 16gb cards I never use.

Good afternoon all...

The camera has landed safely on my desk, unfortunately, I have been swamped all day, between staring at discus eggs and on the road for work, I have not even opened the box. My plan is to tackle it in the AM as I have a full evening ahead of me... I will crack it open in the morning and get to snappin!

I was going to take the approach of almost a day in the life... May bore the $h%^ out of some of you but I don't know what else to do, lol... I was going to take pictures of my shop, trucks, area's, etc as well as the discus of course! I wanted to post pics of my water changes and those things so people can get sort of a first hand feel of how I deal with them on the daily...

If any of you have other suggestions or recommendations, chime in, but as for now that is my plan!

Thanks

Hi all,
Phil, next inline is Rick,nc0gnet0.

Lets see if we can make this easier..so far the shipping has been a tad complicated.A couple of members have had the shipping donated to the forum and then they pay for it out of pocket themselves. Though really generous it makes it a bit confusing....so.instead here is what I suggest. The person receiving the camera pays the person shipping it by paypal.. once you receive the camera if you have fun with it and want to send something to forum...by all means please do so using the Donate link here...
http://forum.simplydiscus.com/misc.php?do=donate

This is completely voluntary though...the idea behind this is the camera journey. Contributions outside of shipping fees are up to you guys .

To recap ...WHEN SHIPPING...

Looking at the shipping options for what I was sending it made sense to go with the USPS priority Flat rate Medium size box. Everything fit perfect and the boxes are available at all post offices here in the USA. Shipping with $200 insurance was $16.95 ( this is the value of the gear I have sent by current Market prices) .

CHECKLIST WHEN PACKING:
pentax DSLR *IST DS 6.1 MP camera
auto focus Lens SMC 18-55 mm F3.5-5.6 AL with Uv filter as a protector and its caps.
manual focus 50 mm prime F2.0 SMC
Nissen Bounce flash works well with the camera and AF lens
3 each 2 GB SD cards
1 USB SD card Reader
Pack of lens Tissue
small bottle of lens cleaner liquid
1 cleaning cloth.
Awesome rugged cushioned and protective water proof case

Shoot for sending the camera out on a Monday or Tues it would be best, as that way it will arrive before the weekend, giving the receiver the weekend to play with it. Please remember to ship it as I have documented... Use a flat rate medium size box with $200 insurance. Keep the tracking information ...it will be on your USPS receipt.

Also a note to the Shipper. Please CC Ricardo (rickztahone) (http://forum.simplydiscus.com/member.php?17754-rickztahone) the tracking number when you ship it and of course send the number to person receiving it...

If only it had a dive housing, Eddie and I could take it into the Tamazon hunting down Gar Pikes =)

edit- for those that don't know, the Tamazon is a nick name for the Tama river that runs south to north through Tokyo. Many buy fish that quickly outgrow their tanks and unfortunately dump them in the river. Parts of the river stay warm year round thanks to industry, so many of the fish survive. Piranha, Garpike, and I am sure lots of cichlids and a host of other warm water fish are caught by fishermen at times. Actually just found this video https://vimeo.com/15941153

If I am in Japan when you come, I am down for the cause and we can tour some discus houses if the misses don't mind. FYI the Nagano beers can be found in Tokyo, but it is a bit of a hunt to find it in each little area, and many shops are not consistent, so it may be there one week, and then be gone for a year and suddenly re-appear (I have a pretty good mental map stretching half way from my home to central Tokyo of where I can usually get it, and well into Yokohama as well). Same with groceries and what not, stuff is not consistent. The two top beers in my book are Ao Oni (Blue Oger/demon/monster or other facsimile) and Yona Yona (have no idea what that means). Both from the same brewery. Had a limited edition IPA from Nagano on my way home tonight and it was very pleasant. Oh, and you can drink pretty much anywhere here. Most don't, but it doesn't land you in Jail. I've walked through grocery stores, into police stations, through train stations, sat on trains, taxi's and so on and son on with beer in hand, and gotten little notice. Have to break that habit before returning to the US.

Back on topic, is the Camera in transit now?

Camera is indeed currently in transit to Rick (nc0gnet0).

I can imagine you landing back in the US at the airport with a beer in hand saying, "what?!?, you can't do that here?!?" lol.

HI all,
With the goal of getting this camera out to as many locations as possible , even international ones. I will pick up any additional shipping costs to get the camera from the USA to any international locations and back again to the USA. What that means is no matter where you are located, the most you will have to pay for shipping is the $16.95 that members in the USA pay to get the camera.. That should help some of our international members participate. I will also help out on a per case basis on shipping costs from country to country if I can.

This may get costly in the long run but I will do it as long as I can.

Thanks,
al

Devon, you would get the camera after me, you are currently 9th in line, and we are currently on the 4th member. I can't give you an exact date, but it should not be too long depending on our international participants. Will keep you posted.

Alright, my first attempt without delving into the manual........

My fish room poses a few challenges to a novice like me. I have a lot of tanks in a relatively small room. As a result, lights from other tanks tend to cast glare on to the subject tank. Same can be said for the room lighting. Now, if I turn off all the lights with the exception of the subject tank, no matter how well lit, the camera seems to think it needs to use the flash. Maybe this is because it is taking it's light reading at the camera body and not the actual subject matter? At any rate, I kept looking for the "Just take the dam picture" button and could not find one.

Nice pics Rick for not being able to find the "take the damn picture" button. You could also try using the speedlight. You simply mount it on top of the camera, turn it on and point the speedlight towards the ceiling. The camera will handle the rest. :) If you point the speedlight towards the fish you get something like this which the fish do not care for.

I tired the speed light, could not get it to fire. Maybe the batteries are dead. I hate what these digital cameras do with the onboard flash, that whole fire once/meter, fire again/meter and on the third try snap a pic. By the time the flash goes off the third time, the fish are doing about 90 mph....lol. I have the same problem with my Olympus lol.

Ok got new batteries and played around with the speed flash. After I got the hang of how to position the flash, I found myself cursing a lot less :)

I think this pic is the best:

Now in these shots there is some meth blue in the tank so the color is a bit off:
