Well that's a nice-sized tank! Is it a 125 gallon? You have tons of space in there. Have fun setting it up :)

That will be one very nice tank for discus! You should consider documenting your journey here..http://forum.simplydiscus.com/forumdisplay.php?365-Our-Tank-Journals

We can move this thread there if you decide to.

Have fun,

Hey Nicole.

Awesome tank. Instead of looking at canister filters, consider having your tank drilled and putting a sump under it. As it's a long term project you should have time to investigate the best sump design for a discus tank.

I'm sure there are many people on SD that can offer advice.

Also it might be worth visiting the Aquarium Society of Victoria. You learn 100 times more stuff talking to people face to face at club meetings, and they often can help point you to where you can get stuff done a lot cheaper than paying full retail price.

That would make a great addition to that section :)

Great advice. I'd personally go with a sump as well

Thank you all.
It will be good to move the thread.
I will look into the sump filter even though I have no idea what it is.
I saw a video with a tank that had white tiles in it so I might look at doing that too.
Let the journey begin.

After trying nearly every type of filter over the years I now use a sump, I don't think I would have a tank without a sump again.

I own 2 fluval fx6 canister filters... With that being said I wish I wasn't lazy and scared and own a sump

I have been looking around and it is a bit expensive. I will ask the Husband if he could help.
I think we can do it, just need to see a working sump. To see where the holes have to be and stuff.

As I mentioned earlier Nicole, Check out the club links. I have seen photos of the club house, and they have quite a few tanks set up and running. They might have a few tanks with sumps at the club house, if not, a few of the club members work in LFS and often LFS have show tanks set up with sumps, especially if it's a salt water tank. The cost of a sump will be about the same cost as a good canister filter. Of course if you buy retail, it will be about the same, but if you can buy the sump tank itself second hand, then you can customise the media, etc.

Are you on any Melbourne/Victorian Aquarium buy and sell FB groups?
