What do you guys put on your canister filter intake to reduce the amount of stuff that flows into it. I've read this helps because you can easily remove the prefilters daily and rinse it as opposed to cleaning the whole filter everyday.

Get AquaClear 110 Foam Insert and slice it to fit your intake.

I buy and use these: http://www.amazon.com/Instant-Ocean-Aquarium-Systems-Prefilter-Sponge-Maxijets/dp/B0002567N2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00

Prob more $ than the other route but they pop right on and are easy to get off and clean, I don't have to cut or create anything just open the bag and they are ready to go!

marineland also makes a good sponge prefilter for their power heads pretty cheap to boot

I use thick layer of filter floss on my canister intake .
It takes a bit more time to rinse / wash it clean than a regular aquarium sponge but the filter materials inside canister stay spottles for a very long period i 4-5 months.
I wash the prefilter floss 2-3 times a week.

That's more what I'm looking for. The hole size looks kind of big though.

What do you guys do with the pre filter if you leave town for a few days? I only have one heavily planted tank, but in that tank the pre filter needs to be cleaned every day or it gets plugged up with bits of stuff. I have other pre filters with a coarser sponge that I use if I can't be there the next day, but I wonder how others deal with this.

I would probably go without a prefilter for the vacation. You won't be feeding anyways right?
