I've heard of people growing them to nine inches. I'm just curious what the average size someone can get a discus to with daily water changes and heavy feedings.

My Giant Flora and Forest Giant Red Turk is already 7" and still growing. 4x feeding and 80%-100% per day. The smallest female I have is 6"

The largest wild I had was 7.5 inches. It was a male Trombeta. The largest domestics were two Hans brought to the 2014 NADA show. Those two fish were huge.

How old are your fish? Also how big were they when you bought them?

The largest I have seen is 10inch or 25cm, it's massive and slightly overweight. I think 6-7 inches are the nicest.

I don't discredit the possibility but until I see the tape measure I don't believe it.

If I had a dollar for every time someone claimed to have seen a 10 inch discus I would be rich. Not trying to beat you up on this but roughly 99.99% of people will dramatically overstate the size of discus. Not sure what my biggest has been. The largest I measured was in the old days of standard length...he was 6 3/8 WITHOUT his tail so somewhere in the 8 inch range in TL. The largest I have now was a little over 7 inches at 18 months. Not sure what he measures right now. I have had a hand full that were probably in the 8 to 9 inch range.

The general rule of thumb is that if someone tells you there discus is 6 inches...its 5. If they tell you its 10 its about 7.5. I seldom believe any measurement that is not accompanied with a picture of it on a tape measure and with the way people edit pictures these days I am not ever sure if I believe that anymore.....

Some of you may know a member here, strawberryblonde or Toni. She has grown fish from Hans out to eight inches and has a thread in her homesteader with pictures of the fish on a tape-measure.

She does grows some lovely fish, And has the tape measure to prove it. Her planted grow out thread was great to follow.

Nice indeed, but still just 6" Standard length which is the true way to measure a Discus.

Wow so it's still putting on size even after four and half years

I had some discus in my last shipment that measured 5.5 - 6" SL, and when I sent them to customers who had "jumbos," my fish were bigger than the jumbos. People are dismissive of 5 - 6" SL fish on a price list but it's a different story when they actually see them in person. I think it's because, as John said, people grossly overestimate fish size. Put them next to a tape measure and you may be surprised at what you actually find. It's not a slight to the fish -- a 6 - 6.5" SL fish is extremely impressive.

All living creatures have a growth period, just like us humans and once out of that period growth for the most part ceases. With discus this is generally considered to be around 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 years old. During the 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 year period the growth is very limited compared to the total growth. Someone is going to have to show me some real evidence of a discus 4 or 5 years old still growing.

As best as I can recall, I've only seen 1 - 8" discus - in one of April Ross' s tanks.
7 inch fish are few & far between ime- haven't seen too many of those.

A 8 inch TL/6 inch SL would be a mighty big Discus

I do think some do grew all their life, but these discus are rare.My reflection deep is still growing but no by much.He was 8" TL in the post when I took the pic and is little bigger now.I also have a PB similar to the one in the pic at 7" TL.

Not quite 8", but he's getting close.

He looks to be about between 7"-7.5" TL from looking at the pic.You can bring the measure bunt to his nose for a more accurate measure.Nice looking discus.

I could do that if I had an extra hand, LOL. When I'm not holding the camera, he measures a smidge over 7.5". This was an extra tall altum flora that grew into a round discus.
