I bought 2 mandarin passions at the same time last year. One now has a black tail but the other one doesn't. Does the black tail make it inferior. I'm thinking it's of inferior quality due to the black tail, like peppering?

Black tail is less desirable than a clear tail, but judging from the pics in this case the fish with the black tail is the better quality fish. Perhaps if you could get a better pic of the clear tailed fish I would have a different opinion,

Yeah, black tail is definitely cool. Makes a great contrast to the rest of the body's colors. If I were you, I would consider myself lucky I had one of each. I know nothing of grading standards or how it affects the 'value' of a fish. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And to me, Black Tail is more distinctive than translucent tail. Which makes him inherently cool.

Doesn't look bad to me. I don't know what a show judge would say but I kind of like it. Who knows, in another 5 years they could be judging Best of Show "Black Tail PB" division.
It's amazing to me how variable the genetics of Discus and especially PB's can be.

I agree that black tail is another kind of peppering. I surprised to find out that one of my fish which usually have clear white tail suddenly showing black tail one day. As for the cause, it's a little unclear. First I thought it was because of the water change but possibly also because of the sudden light on. I can't be certain.
my yellow pigeon's tail turns much darker when she is breeding
