View Full Version : My Walk about 35-70

I recently started taking a morning walk during the golden hours of early morning at a park very near me...Its nice wooded area, good mix of habitat. Though I usually pack everything but the kitchen sink when I head out on a trail with my gear I found I take far more pics with far less gear!. To that end, The only thing I take is a camera and one lens.

My Lens of choice has been an old Pentax F 35-70 with macro.
(info here...http://www.pentaxforums.com/lensreviews/SMC-Pentax-F-35-70mm-F3.5-4.5-Macro-Zoom-Lens.html)
This Lens is really a gem for it price. They can be had for about $50 on Ebay. I have 2 copies.. This one I am using is rather beat up. The filter ring is broken so I have a UV filter taped on with electrical tape. I bought this lens for $20. The camera is my trusty K20D... which can be had for under $150 these days. (Shutter Count 52000 and still clicking:)

I've taken alot of good shots with it. Its the perfect lens for casual photography on a trail. But the Macro is surprising good and it can really put out some nice images.

Just another example of Photography not needing to break the bank.

Thought I'd post images here taken with it from time to time...

Heres a set from today..

The photo of the stream got my attention which might sprout some native brown trout and the early rise of the fiddle heads make for a great alternative to asparagus if picked at the right time while the are still curled.
Great shots Al...

Seems to have some magenta cast to a lot of the photos, is that the lens or sensor? I've seen video do it before.

Nice pictures at any rate! I'd love to have a place like that, that close. I have a 17-40mm that is becoming a favorite of mine, use it much more than the 24-105, but I've been eyeing a 16-35 and selling the 17-40.

Very nice Al. Minolta carries a 35-70 f4 that I absolutely used to love. I've seen them as low as $30 used a long time ago. I had two in my collection. When I got my full frame sensor, I actually walked around with it a lot when I didn't feel like walking around with expensive gear. The legacy gear is such a treat to deal with.

This lens in particular, had a macro mode switch. However, we found out a long time ago that we could "hack" it and it allowed us to do macro to a 1:1 level by removing some of the circuitry. Pretty wild actually.

Super. Love the Columbines. Is that a Lady Slipper, could spend an hour just with that.

I have a few places near my house that I photograph frequently. I make myself take just one lens to see from different viewpoints. It is a great learning exercise, and a lot easier on the back.

Matt, that magenta in some of the images is probably the sensor....particularly where water is reflecting the sky. I could have cleaned that up in pp.

It's really not to bad in most, a more trained eye is more likely to notice it. Sometimes I fight to see it.

I like that Orchid!

Thanks Matt. I wanted to retake the pic of the one I posted earlier in this thread...but when I got there it was MIA:(

Probably picked as it was trail side.
