So as i said in a earlier thread im now the proud owner of 10x Blue Cobolt Discus 2" in size ordered From Tony and Jeffery Tan.

The whole experience was a delight and no discus died during transport.30min after being in tank they were cruising around fins erect, all in front of tank none hiding or dark in color.Im verry pleased to say the least.

They are in a 200L tank 4ft size.Feeding 6 times a day Benkers Discus Royal (frozen food imported from germany) Hikari Discus granules, Ocean Nutrition Bloodworm and Daphnia.will add to the menu once my pocket recovers.

Water change 50% Morning and 50% at night and syphon uneaten food and crap 30min after feeding.

These fish are realy easy to deal with and very boysterous and always hungry and inquisitive. The first pictures are from the day they arrived 30min in tank.Last week tuesday.

Good luck with them Quintin. They look great and the biggest one already started to get a blue hue on him.

What kind of water do you use for WCs?
If its aged and treated with Safe ,maybe an easier and more effective routine for you and your fish would be to do one 90% instead of 2 50% daily.
Anyway , keep us posted with pics and progress from their growth.

Quintin

Strait tap water with safe.ive found fish to get less stressed with 50% twice a day.and that way they get two big fresh doses of water a day.and with the syphoning after feeding.and wiping glass every second day this tank stays clean.and the fish love it.i dont have a light on tank so looks very dull.but my main concern rite now is only the fish.they do look amazing in the day with sunlight.pics really dnt do them justice.

Maybe you already know , but its good to mention that when you do straight tap WC you can significantly reduce stress in discus by running the tap water hose through a thick layer of filter floss or micron sock layers.
That way you outgass the water more quickly and reduce the microbubbles in water, which are the main cause of discus stress after WC.
They irritate fish gills and make breathing harder on discus.

This is a really good practice, also, if you put the hose inside the water in your tank you will reduce the impact of water from hose hitting the water surface and reduce the bubbles significantly.

Thanks but tank in bedroom and im using the dreaded bucket.lol

No destination is too far away for a PVC python :-) .
Anyways I have found that bucket WC does a great job in agressive water agitating and thus quicker outgassing of the notorious microbbubles that bothers discus gills.

they look nice and are growing well...

what are your thoughts about the tall once, post 25, 3rd pic on right and post 26, 1st pic on the left....I am not sure if they will continue to look that way as they grow or if they will become rounder, they seem like 'part' bulldog variety...

More like high bodied. I do not see any bulldog tendencies.

So its been a rough month. Due to diffficulties beyond our controll we didn't have power for 3 days and a storm following week with another 3days of no power and water overdose of chloromine, I have lost 2 adult discus (one my first ever... Sniff) and 2 of my biggest Tan discus.on a lighter note tans have been relocated to 400l tank.will post pics over weekend.

Nice work with the grow out Quintin. Its great fun raising juvenile discus isn't it? The fact that you have some control on their development is great. Just curious, hows the 'tall one' coming along?

Again. Good job.

Love the look of these fish. Great work. Love those patterns. Very unique. Is it true that cobalts will lose their markings as they mature?

Quintin
09-15-2016, 02:09 PM
Thanx for the compliments. I dont know ryan. These were purchased from the tans as coblts but was explained they dont actually breed cobolt to cobolt. They are from blue diamond ss brood. The ones that dont come out as bd ss.

Hey mate... The results are really wonderful :D I have done the same test (8 Tony Tan's discus) but with not this result. Your discus progress is amazing. May I ask what do you feed them and what is you WC routine?

Quintin
09-16-2016, 03:46 PM
They started on hikari discus bits, beefheart mix and Benkers Discus Royal.at the time had 10 x 4-5cm babies in a std 4ft 200l tank.id do 50% twice a day with vacuum after feed.

From about 10-12cm i moved them to a 1.6m 380l tank and do 50% water change a day now with vacuum after feeds.presently feeding beef heart mix, benkers discus royal aswell as a BS granule and Black High Vitamin Granule From Prof Dirk Belsted here in South Africa. His food is produced in germany. That being said their Staple is beefheart. Other foods are to mix it up abit

Quintin
09-16-2016, 03:48 PM
Hey sorry to hear it didnt work out for you pavlos.

pavlos
09-17-2016, 02:02 AM
Thanks a lot Quintin!! You have done a great job. It was really weird that from the fish that I got 7 months ago which were 5-6cm, two of them are now 13+cm but the others are smaller. Three of the are only 7-8 cm. Don't really know what has gone wrong. The quality of Tony Tan is really high.

Quintin
09-17-2016, 03:44 AM
What strains did u get paul?

pavlos
09-17-2016, 10:04 AM
I got 5 Leopards and 3 Leopard Snakeskins. The 3 LSS did not grow well (up to 10 cm). The leopards were better with the two of them getting near 14cm. I do think that there might be a problem with the fishes cause if I was really bad in raising them up I wouldn't have two of them near 14cm...
