I have been trying to cut out the work and do more efficient water changes. 100% 55 gallons take me about 1 hour to drain, siphon, fill and fill tank.
My current setup is I use a Ehiem 1260 to pump the water out of the tank into the bathtub using a python, this takes about 15 minutes. The annoying part of this is that I have put the pump into tank and pull the python out. I am trying to eliminate this. After this I start siphoning, using the same python so then I have to take the pump out switch the ends, the siphon and the hose end. Then start siphoning for about 10 minutes because that's the lowest point the pump can pump. Then after siphoning I then pull the hose end and put it on the pump and drop into the water barrel, 15 minutes to fill. Then pull the tubing out and connect it to the faucet to fill, another 15 minutes.
It's kind of my routine now but I am probably gonna pull out my other tank in storage and set it up.
This is what I have been thinking.

I want to eliminate putting the pump in the tank because the discus go crazy when I place it in. This would look more friendly and I would leave it inside the tank. My question is would this still work if I made the pipe inside the tank close to the bottom of the tank? I would be using 1" ID pvc pipe. Would the current be fast of enough for a automatic siphon?
Draining problem:
Those with automatic draining and less hassle system, where did you drain and how did you drain? Did you drill hole into the wall and drained it out there?
Any ideas?
