All I ever do it change tons of water until the filter catches up. A fishless cycle takes weeks and you have to feed the tank ammonia every day, I think. There are products that you can buy to add to the water that are said to cycle the filter immediately. Some are better than others but with all of them the fish should be added as soon as you put in the product.

Like Liz said you can use products to skip the fish less cycle. I have used Fluval Biological Enhancer and Seachem Stability, with great success. But like Liz said make sure you do large daily water changes!!!

It's been a while since I cycled an aquarium, personally never did water changes until right at the end, and normally takes 4-6 weeks. And the water change I do at the end is just to get nitrate to an acceptable level. There's many ways to achieve the same thing ! !

If you can seed any bacteria from another filter this is a good way to go.
