View Full Version : 75 Gallon journey

So I wished I had done this from the beginning but do feel I should go back and document my journey.

First off I need to thank Kenny for such high quality stock that was one of the key components to success so far. Secondly the rest of the forum for the loads of info and helping me to realize my mistakes early and make the necessary corrections.

In January of 2015 I purchased my first discus from my LFS. Had never even seen a discus before at that point. My son had received a 10 gallon tank as a Christmas gift from his godfather so we decided to buy one. Fish was about half dollar size if I remember correctly. Was definitely a fry with no color or pattern to start with. We very much enjoyed watching this fish grow and gain it's pattern and color and fell in love with discus. Unfortunately I did not receive any info on care for the discus and I'm sure you can all guess how that ended. The fish amazingly made it about a year before he began to whirl and eventually died. After this unfortunate event is when so started reading up here. Was sad to find out that everything we had done was wrong and that this poor fish probably suffered quite a bit.

I knew for a fact we wanted discus again but also new I needed some education. So after reading up here and feeling confident enough I went ahead and started purchasing equipment...

So here was the beginning.

75G tank
Fluval G6 canister filter
48" finnex planted + 24/7
Finnex 300w titanium heater
Co2 injection setup
Eco complete subtrate
Planted tank

February first start of tank

Beginning of April

Mid April 6 discus added

So April I had the pleasure of taking my family to meet Kenny and choose our fish. Kenny was so kind and helpful. Very much appreciated that he took the time to show my 4 year old (and us) around his fish room. He also took a lot of time giving us some education and answering questions while we checked out the fish room.

We had placed the order with him prior but he allowed us to choose the fish from the tanks

1 checkerboard pigeon
1 golden checkerboard pigeon
1 cobalt
1 BSS x Blue Scorpion
1 tiger carnation turquoise
1 leopard eruption

All were in the 3"-3.5" range with some being closer to 3

Here is the tank in May. Unfortunately it would seem I didn't take many good closeups of the fish in May. Plants were growing like crazy. Was only doing weekly WCs at his point. I KNOW I KNOW. SHAME SHAME!

Beautiful, I also have a 75 and it has been set up two months. I'm buying some discus from Kenny as soon as he posts his Sept shipment!

That brings me to June. At this point the growth rate difference within the group has become quite evident. 3 of the six are significantly larger. Mid June I also added the 5" Rafflesia 100728100729100730100731100732100733100734100735

At this point I thought my fish were growing and coloring nicely yet the more I was here I started to see they could be doing so much better

Ryan925
08-31-2016, 12:13 AM
So here is the tank at the beginning of July. This is just before I started on the road of change 100736100737

I will also mention this was my first planted tank as well. I was quite proud of my success with the plants but at this point I had realized they needed to go

Ryan925
08-31-2016, 12:46 AM
So here we are mid July and I have finally decided to remove the majority of the plants as well as my drift wood.

I ordered some more seiryu stone and some really nice pieces of manzanita10073810073910074010074110074210074310074 4100745100746100747

At this point I noticed a difference in the fish behavior immediately. I could see they were using much more of the tank with more free room to swim.

I believe it was shortly after this that I actually started a thread fearful that I had stunted the smaller ones.

Ryan925

Making these changes allowed me to see immediate results in partially correcting what I was doing wrong.

I knew at this point that I needed to do a substrate change but was so intimidated by it.

I was very nervous to over stress the fish with the move and the changes. All the credit goes to the forum for helping me to go through the next step in process.

Thanks to you guys providing me step by step recommendation and the assurance that it wouldn't be that hard on the fish I finally went for it.

I removed the hardscpape from the tank then moved the fish to a 30 gallon tote with heater and air stone. I then drained the tank and removed the 120# of eco.

I couldn't believe how much debris was in there. I was thoroughly vac'ng with wc every other day and thought I was keeping it pretty clean.

I then did a thorough wipe down of the tank and added 50# of the white PFS. Added back the hardscape and few plants and filled. I then ran the tank for a couple of hours before moving fish back.

With the new setup the difference in the fish was night and day and almost instantanious. The color difference was incredible. It also seems they are growing right before my eyes.

I hope this journey can help newbies like myself accept their mistakes and make the necessary changes to give them the best results. I see so many ask for help yet refuse to put it into action. I hope that physically seeing the difference will help them to accept it. 100748100749100750100751

Great journal Ryan .
I like your discus too and i think they still got potential to grow big and fancy.
Accepting advices and use other people experiences is the way to go .

I just cant open the attachments in your last post . As the matter of fact , theese are the only pics that show up to me as an atachment option . All the rest pics in this thread just opens automaticlally and inline with the text .

Well the journey continues. Have done a little more rescaping. This continues to be a work in progress. I found that the way I had arranged the rocks into groups, to hold the anubias, was a bad idea. The roots and the groups of rock were trapping a ton of debris. Today I removed the rocks and anubias and did two back to back WCs while vac'ng all the debris.

I repositioned the manzanita a bit so that the wood is at more of a downward angle. I then decided to attach the anubias to one single rock rather than sticking it into the cracks of a group. I now can pick the one rock up and move it to vac. I can also remove it and its plants to wash roots if need be.

Not sure how long this scape will remain. Only time will tell 101473101474101475101476101477101478

At it again with more scaping. I am slowly but surely headed towards hardscape only. I removed all anubias and a lot of rock. I also repositioned wood again. As soon as I get some more wood in I think the remaining 2 plants will go

Discus are growing and becoming really nice Ryan .
They have great rounded shape so far and are bursting with colours , especially the 2 red based discus.
As for the scape I'm not sure how heavy this stones are , but maybe you can silicone them together like they were before and tie anubias on them , so they can be moved easily around as a whole structure .
And as far aa Echinodorus goes , you can pot them in small pots with nutrient soil for easy moving around during siphoning.

Ryan925
09-24-2016, 05:53 PM
The stone is fairly light as it is seiryu. I love my stone groupings but just made me cringe to see what accumulated between them. I have some more wood coming. I am growing more fond of the hardscape. I hate to let these red flame swords go though. They are beautiful plants but discus are most important.

Thanks for the compliments Filip. I am quite pleased the progress I am having despite early mistakes

Hard to believe my runt/stunt is almost perfectly round lol. He's the little checkerboard. He is showing some growth though so happy about that

Came home today to a box of new manzanita. Some really nice pieces. Have them soaking can't wait to get them into the scape

I've been trying to keep the wood towards the very back but I have seen many biotope type tanks with wood throughout?? I assume the fish love the structure as if in the wild. I just get concerned of injury if they get startled.

same here, i slowly let go of all my plants and although every plant was loved i am happy with the hard scape, it is so much cleaner. my discus really like the branchy wood, and "interact" with it more than they did with the large solid logs and the giant amazon swords i used to have in the tank. they huddle in it at night and glide thru it in the day. with more pieces u really have a lot of options to mix and match. i watch some ppl rearrange it regularly when they do wc. cant wait to see pics of it in the tank.

Ryan925
10-01-2016, 08:56 PM
Well here is my latest scape. I love the thickness of these branches. This won't be final layout. They are sort of wedged together as they are still a bit "floaty."

The branches I had in the tank previously are so much skinnier so not sure how I like the mix. I may order a couple more of similar thickness

Hey Phil. I got the wood from manzanitadirect. They are really great. Super fast shipping and great product. They send me free product everytime.

I soaked mine for 24 hours. Dumped the water and refilled. After about 12 hours the water was still clear so i figured it was good. Last time I got my wood from them it was about the same. Only couple days soaking and very little tannin.

When I first started my tank I had a piece of mopari that I boiled. It had my water so yellow. After several days and WCs later I added some purigen to my filter. Within 24 hours water was clear.

That looks fantastic Ryan. Really clean and the fish look great. I have some mazanita branches still in the box they came in. So many sharp points. I think when all 8 are together in the 75 gallon they will need that open space so I may not put in. It may end up next to that sand I never used! Yours looks great though. Plenty of room to swim ans so natural looking.

I was a bit worried about the same thing. My previous setup I had the wood all to the back. The more I looked at tanks, especially wilds, I saw a lot more wood structure throughout the tank. The fish really seem to like it. They like to hang out in the wood and weave in and out. I think the more natural structure gives them comfort and probably some entertainment

Haha Phil. I think my pics are terrible btw.. In need of a new phone badly. I've been meaning to get out an actual camera one day and try and take better ones.

The red is actually a checkerboard pigeon. He was my runt/stunt but seems to be progressing.

Years ago, some wise old fishkeeper gave me a great tip on getting wood to sink or stay put- he said get a flat piece of slate and drill a hole through it and attach to the bottom of your wood with a stainless steel screw.Place in your aquarium.Slate can be left permanently,or removed after wood is eventually waterlogged.

Thanks atlantadiscus! If boiling it again doesn't speed it up I may just do that. I wanted to avoid attaching it to something because with a BB there is nothing to hide it but if it can be removed later I could put up with it for awhile. Thanks!

Sorry ryan not sure why I thought you had a RE, looks like one! Nice fidh either way...

Your red fish in the center of that tank shot is a?? What a stunner, I am picturing a group of ten of those looking breathtaking!

My new wood is still giving me some issues and causing me some regret... I bought too much to begin with, I was soaking it in piping hot water in a big garbage pale for nearly a month, the big piece still hasnt water logged and its too big so I pulled it. It was also growing some weird algae, my pleecos seem to finally be cleaning it, I was pulling it every water change rinsing it under steamy hot water as well.. PITA!!!

In my wild tank, I purchased some slate drilled wood from a local keeper on craigs list. I just love this wood and I have a sand bottom so I hide the slate easy... it def works though and helps.

Oh ya big red. She really is impressive. She's a rafflesia. I wanted to add some more red to my tank. I wanted an RE but Kenny was sold out by the time I decided to add one. I chose the rafflesia instead. Kenny e-mailed me to tell me he had mostly females left and that they had less pattern but a much more vibrant red. When I went to pickup Kenny told me he had saved me one of the reddest ones. I was stunned to see the red on this fish. Was amazing. I bought her at 5" +/-. She is super thick when I look at her head on.

It's funny cuz she immediately became the boss of the tank. The others never fight with her and she never has to chase the others. She just roams the tank like it's all her own

Bummer to hear of the wood. It's so tough to estimate how much you need or how it will all fit. This group of manzanita got that nasty slime on it. None of my other previous wood did. Was pretty gross looking for awhile but finally went away.

The alenquer is really quite interesting it's like almost having three fish in one. Depending on his mood he is quite different. Sometimes a much darker color with no bars. Other times very lightly colored with no bars. Sometimes displays all bars or at times only the "heckel" bars.

Ryan they look amazing. You have done such a great job with them. They are all so big and colorful. You made some really cool choices when you picked them. That Alenquer is really interesting- a living mood ring. Don't tell Kenny he is a three-in-one fish or he will send you the bill for the other two! ;) (Kidding Kenny!)

While I am enjoying each picture, I am trying to imagine them in your tank together since they have changed so much. I think we need a full tank picture when you get a spare moment. Sorry if I am too demanding but they must look really nice all together...just say'n.

Thanks Doc. Yep it's a neon sapphire. All are from Kenny.

Several have been doing the dance for many months. The rafflesia laid eggs maybe a month after getting her which is likely why she hasn't shown much growth. The turq has been hanging around her the passed couple months but he eats the eggs as fast as she lays them. The others just do their dance and fight as normal lol

Ryan they look fantastic! They are so round and thick. They have really grown well under your care. The shy Alenquer is so beautiful. Look at those spots! That is really interesting.

The fun part is to go back to the beginning and then now and see how they fill the tank. That is when you really see the growth as a group.

Thanks my friend. I am pretty happy with the progress. The checkerboard and the cobalt were two that I had feared that I had stunted. They have hit quite the growth spurt. It's hot really apparent which are males an which are females. The males are quite a bit larger with really pointed dorsals.

The alenquer still intrigues me as its behavior is much different than the others. Little more shy. It definitely has claimed the air stone as its territory

I would say she is probably 5". She is the smallest of the group. Just a guess though. I really need to take them and measure. It's really deceiving looking through the glass. At times when I am really close to the glass they appear much larger than I thought they were I'm really bummed that the rafflesia pretty much stopped growing as soon as she started laying eggs. I thought she had so much potential since she was soooo thick when I got her from Kenny at 5".

Thanks Joe it is. Although since I added a couple smaller ones awhile back I still am having to keep up on feeding and wcs. When I decided to add a couple 4.5" fish I grossly underestimated the size of the others in the tank. I didn't think the 4.5" would be far off but they really are.

Ryan,

Outstanding job raising these beautiful fish. Your simple approach to setup/decor appears to have clear benefits, i.e., minimal filtration, etc. I've thought a few times myself how this approach combined with daily WC is the way to go for grow-outs vs. a big sump with all its added surface area with potential for more nasties, like I have.

Hey Kenny it has worked. I probably could have done things better but it has been a success and a good learning period. Funny you should say that about filtration as I have built a sump and once I find time to build my stand I will switch over. I look forward to less maintenance and getting everything out of the tank

I think a sump works well with larger Discus but it can lead to more work doing grow-outs.

Looking really awesome Ryan! Job well done, keep it up! TFOS! TANK FULL OF STUNNAS! LOL

I must say and no disrespect or anything but I sort of chuckle when I see the glo-fish. It almost seems like a juxtaposition in a way... They actually look cool in the tank since your discus are so colorful and again not knocking you or the glo-fish. I guess I feel like they are a tad gimicky and it seems like two worlds colliding when you have these big beautie discus which some or most say are sooo hard to keep and like the king of the aquarium then the glo-fish which to me are a draw and appeal to maybe say a kid or new aquarist because of the pop and all...

Anyways, sorry to ramble, I really like the tank and fish a lot, just an observation is all...

Kenny - I am confused by your thought process here. Maybe if you explained more or hinted on the nasties and issues you have had or are talking about it will help me or the others understand...? I don't see how a sump is a downfall for any sizes fish or discus?

Sumps are great but they do increase the surface area that the tank water touches and therefore which you need to keep clean. For example, it's important to periodically clean the 'film' buildup on the inside tank walls and other surfaces inside tank as part of your basic husbandry. A sump multiplies this surface area.

What exactly this 'film' is made of I can't tell you but I'm sure its organic in nature and we know its the dissolved organic solids "Docs" that Discus have trouble tolerating. Even though the tank water can appear perfectly clean it can still contain a high enough concentration of these 'Docs' to stress and eventually kill Discus.

For example, adult Discus, because of their more developed immunities, can tolerate less than perfect water quality to a greater extent than say Discus fry which need literally pristine water conditions to survive.

HTH

Thank you. I was feeding the sf bay frozen beef heart plus and fdbw worms mainly. I have recently switched to bh flake. I kinda switch on the fdbw between the bio and the spinach.

I also mix in some of Forrests aquabits, hans flake and am now trying to introduce Als bio gold

Here's a good post in the Homesteader section which explains more about the film that coats surfaces in the aquarium. So critical to keep inside-tank surfaces cleaned regularly, especially with younger Discus.

First and foremost, sorry Ryan if this thread is or feels hi-jacked, we can move this to another post if you'd prefer? I guess it organically grew in this thread through convo...

Kenny - I must admit, I was ready to fight the sump battle and call you wrong or make a point as to why it isn't that bad... Until I went and wiped down my sump and got some nice brown paper towels... Here I am soooo anal about the wipe downs in the main tank, yet so lax w the sump. Don't get me wrong its not that I never touch it, but its not as regular as the aquarium and it should be!!!

I totally see what you are saying and it makes total sense and you got me to clean my sump and I am gonna start doing once or twice weekly wipe downs...

On that note, any one have any products, tips or tricks or DIY way to clean in between the baffles? One of my chambers is rather slim as the water spills into the final return and I don't know what to use. I was thinking maybe like a baby bottle brush or a toilet brush (NEW OF COURSE) and even wrapping that in paper towel to absorb and grab the nastyyyyy.

Lol no worries since that is the next stage of my tank.

They make a set of brushes made for filter intakes. I can't remember I I got them. Got a set of 3 sizes. Look like a big bottle brush. I actually cut the handle off one and taped it to a nylon fish tape and I use that to rub through my canister hoses.

I bought a couple of 'Dryer Lint Cleaners' from a hardware store, which come in different sizes, convenient in reaching some areas.

Ryan,

I like that intake box, I'd probably put another layer or two of pre-filter myself. If you can stop any solids/semi-solids right there then the rest of your sump will stay 'clean'. Hopefully this box is easily accessible to change/rinse the pre-filter(s) frequently. What will go in the first chamber below the intake box?

EDIT: looks like there may be a couple spots you could put bags of Purigen. But if you do this be mindful not to overly hinder the water flow, had to experiment with mine to get it right.

Thanks for the input. The box design is to hopefully make maintenance very easy. I do now have a 30 ppi later if poret under the 10 and 20.the box will be very easy to work with. Just lift off the lid and out comes the foam.

The second chamber is where my heaters will go. In the first chamber under the intake box will be where all my cycled media will sit in bags along with more.

For purigen I actually have a chamber after the wet/dry where a pump will sit to feed a purigen reactor

I kicked so many ideas around for so long before finally long settling. I combined combined several ideas. I purposely way overbuilt it so I don't need to redo it when I upgrade tank size. Which single strain would it be after seeing them all?

Now that is the tough question. I really want to do a fry growout so it will really depend on what is available at the time

Just a small update. I haven't posted many good pics of this fish since it has been very shy since I got him. Now that it is becoming more social I snapped a few new pics. It is shaping up nicely and developing some nice pattern and color although seems to be a somewhat slow grower. Depending on it's mood the color really varies and the bars and halo come and go111039111040111041111042

I remember the day you got him Ryan. What a swan he has become- although he was gorgeous from day one. He has really come along nicely. Well done!

K......enny sure picked out a nice one for you!

Good to hear he is finally stepping out of his safety bubble net. ;)

Thanks Filip. Not sure on size but I did get him from Kenny last November I believe. I had ordered him at 4" but ended up getting once quite a bit smaller. Kenny chose a smaller fish with nicer shape for me.

Since my sump is sitting idle until I find a free moment to build my stand I figured I'd go ahead with the purigen reactor for now I teed into my canister return and use an inline ball valve to throttle flow.

I guess you need to choose 1080p for quality to actually see the action

This is my first attempt at a purigen reactor and seems to be working well so far.

It looks great Ryan! Wonder how many others run these and what kind of results they get. Any ideas?

Maybe start a new thread? Unless there is an old one to dig up. Not that I need anything more in my cabinet but this looks interesting. I have a 1 liter bag just sitting there passively. It works but tumbling is the bomb.

I could have you running in 20 mins flat! ;)

Still dialing flow in. It's much better now. It seems at first it needs much slower flow but then the tiniest of the beads start to settle down and flow can be higher. I have a micron sock on the output until the dial in process is through

What kind of reactor are you using Ryan ?
I don't know if you have restricted your main flow to comply with purigen reactor or you are using a spare pump for it ?
I would not compromise my main filtration and flow with additional gadgets .

Please observe and report for results or improvement in water quality with this chemical filtration .

That's a lot of purigen. I use a 1/4 cup in a mesh bag (passively) in a very heavily planted 40 gallon and it lasts me 3-6 mos. I use it primarily for water clarity. Never used it with discus though.

I have a couple of low flow pumps and extra purigen so I am starting to get ideas. What is the flow rate you on your reactor? Does the reactor pull and empty back into your sump?

Hi Filip good questions. The main flow to tank is not restricted at all. I teed into return just above my aquastop valve. There is a ball valve on the purigen supply line but not main return back to tank. The reactor has it's own return line back to tank. Flow through reactor is very slow.
Here is the reactor I'm using

AquaMaxx Fr-se GFO Carbon and Biopellet Hang-on Filter Media Reactor https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0184GF5PQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apap_fCixoRFCwzPRx

Her Eric as of now it's teed into my canister return. When I have my sump rubbing I was planning on using a pump in sump then have it dump back into sump down stream of the pump.

Thanks I appreciate it. It's been a long journey but I am pretty happy with the results. Next time there are definitely things I will do differently
