As some of you know I received these crosses from Ryan this past Friday so they will be with me a week tomorrow. This will be their growout thread which will be very interesting. These guys are eating, active and super aggressive. I bumped the temp down a bit to try and cool their jets but did not happen. Today I noticed shimmying with two of the striated reds so there is the source of the aggression. Guessing these are six months of age and are at a Ricky Lim four inches SL and I want them to grow, not lay eggs...grrr.

So the next six posts will be used to post pics of these guys to show their (hopeful) grow. The first post will be for reference and to id the fish. I am "naming" each fish based on how I am id-ing them so not really intending to be a name. The photos have not be enhanced in any way and really are not that great.

Tonight they got a 100% water change, I wanted them on their sides so I could measure them. Measured the solid and the largest striated. The solid was right at 4 inches SL and the largest was 4.5 inches SL. The rest vary between that.

Thanks Paul, I like stripe too. It was shimmying and pecking at the sponge yesterday. :( Not sure about this season. Thinking maybe a few heckels but not really sure. Trying to not go as deep as I went before.

Very nice Pat. Just curious how often and how large will water changes be and also their feeding routine?

Thanks Joe, they are currently in a 40 breeder for QT and will be going in a 75 after QT. In the 40 they are getting about an 80% water change each evening. I treat them like wilds in that I leave them a couple inches to swim in before refilling. If they were real wilds I would leave enough water for them to remain upright. I feed about three or four times a day and I do not power feed.

To much discus drama; have two fish shimmying on opposite sides of the tank, Fork and Stripe (suspected females) and the largest (suspected male) is shacking up with Stripe with both peaking at the sponge filter....sex and gang behaviors. Who needs TV lol.

Really looking forward to following this one along!

Such cool and different fish, right up my alley for sure!

Is there a story about your obtaining of them? Sounds like it was unexpected or a gift. Were these left overs or something new ryan will be importing and selling?

Second Hand Pat
10-24-2016, 11:37 AM
Thanks Phil, these were the last six Ryan had left of this strain and he offered me a sweet deal on them...and I took him up on it. So yes, it was unexpected but I couldn't say no. Enjoying them a lot.

Ryan would need to answer if this strain is one of Ricky normal offerings.

Silly question, so at this point you now have what would be considered a proven pair or????????

Sorry if it really is a stupid question, I'm just use to my lake vic cichlids and them being harem breeders.

Rob, a pair is not considered proven until they actually have wigglers on the cone. The only thing we know for sure is one of the fish is female. I can generally tell the gender based on the tube. No question is silly lol.

So Stripe and Striated Blue laid their second spawn last night and they still have eggs. The little solid goes in and eats the eggs if she can. From the tubes last night Stripe is a female and Striated Blue a male. If there are still eggs at water change time perhaps there will be eye spots. Doubt it however as I do not believe the male is old enough.

So Pat? Is it true that they slow down in the growing department once they start to breed? I did read something along those lines on here somewhere but unable to find anymore information on the topic.....Might be worth starting a new thread on this one.

It is my understanding Joe that it is the rearing of the fry which really retards growth.

I would also include the egg production. I took my female away from the male as she just stopped growing but yet she was laying eggs every week to 2 weeks. Sometimes this would happen just days apart. She had been doing this for the better part of two years laying eggs 4-6 times a month.

She has started to grow a little in the last 3 months. she is by herself in a 20gal. We'll see where it goes for the next 6mo.

I bought her at LFS with 7 others all just a bit bigger than a silver dollar I have had her 2yrs. My other males from the same batch are 6-7 inches long guessing I have not actually measured. My other pair has the biggest male Red/Turk about 7" with a my other female who has not laid nearly as much and is much bigger. Probably she is 5-6" not nearly as thick as her mate. I wish I had a way of sharing pictures here but it is not in the cards. Both of these pairs are in two 75gal tanks which I do 50-75% daily mostly but sometimes life gets in the way and its every other day. In one 75 I have a trio 2males the red-turk and a blue snakeskin with the red-turk female they get along very well never any squabbles. So I have Five discus in two 75gal tanks. The female is now in my hospital tank to see how much more she grows.
