I was invited to go on a little photo shoot with one of the local camera club members. Only out a couple hours but saw Cara Cara, eagles, hawks and lots of small birds.

This image would have told a better story if I had gotten a bit more of the Vultures in the image.

You got the light very well, shutter speed, iso and aperture seems the correct ones
The difficulty of photograph birds it is that they are a fast movement animal, freeze the image it is not always so easy, congratulations!

A place well worth visiting multiple times if it is close. I would definitely go when the light is a little less harsh.
Love Crested Cara Caras. When I was in Curacao they were called Wara Wara.

Like the Meadow Lark because of the nice BG. Perhaps a little tighter crop?

Thank you NeonTetra, I am shooting in manual so very well understand my relationships between SS, ISO and aperture. :) Sitting birds are easy. BIFs a different story but have been somewhat lucky with that also.

It is about 30 minutes away Stan so will be back. We were actually there about 7:30 so fairly early (Ken did not want to do the sunrise). Most of these images were captured on the way out at about 10:00/10:30 so yes, the light was bright.

A little tighter crop on the meadow lark.

That Lark background is just so well rendered. Great shot Pat. A great set all around. I miss my 70-400 :(

Thanks Ricardo, overall I am happy with this set. I love meadow larks and until yesterday it has been a long time since I have seen one. I might go back and try a few local edits along the feet and white areas around the head/shoulders. There is hint of blue which I do not like.

OK, now that is great. Action makes the shot. Nicely positioned in the frame. Cool.

(Take a brush and lighten the bird a smidge ;~) )

Logger head shrike... butcher birds. Known to impale its preyon sharp thorns and barb wire fences. They are technically passerines...aka song birds but highly predatory attacking insects, reptiles, amphibians, bats, and small birds...

And yes... they intentional impale their larger prey. A very unique predatory song bird. Another of my favorites Pat. Critters like this are why I got hooked on Natural History!

Looks like gnat catcher.. if you look at the base of the bill you can see sensory "hairs"alot of fly catchers share this feature

I use to see these birds a lot as a kid Al. Rarely see them now so this was a rare treat. It is the same with the Meadow Lark.

Pat your birds are amazing. Your composition and clarity are really amazing. It is really interesting seeing them because we don't have these species in Upstate NY. Just wondering if you have captured any Sand Pipers in your collection. I love those. They have such personality.

This ones a warbler. A large group of very challenging birds to id. They change their patterns and plummages dramatically from juvenile to adult, between male and females and seasonally. I highly recommend Petersons Field guide to Eastern birds. ..the western one is good too. I think warblers are cool little birds but they are real pitas to Id..

Best guess ..though i am not great with warblers, .Palm Warbler. Note the slight white patches in the tail corners. Winter plummage

Something like this Jenene? Not sure which bird this is. This picture was taken on the beach near my parents house.

Thats a plover Pat. They can be a challenging group as welll. Alot of Ids rely on the time of year, size, bill color and shape as well leg color. This particular one looks to be a Black Bellied Plover in winter plummage.. very dramatic difference from its summer plummage..... it spends its summers in the Tundra, winter along the coast of the eastern seaboard, down around the gulf coast and mexico coast.

Pat, Al, might this be a Dunlin?

Hi Stan,
Just saw this.

A Dunlin does have similar color patterns but being of the piper family is not so stocky. The real key feature though for me here is the size and most of all the bill color and shape. Dunlins bills are slightly curved downward and slight of build. The Black Bellied Plover has a shorter bill that very straight and stout....its almost chisel like in appearence.

Hth,
Al
