I am building, finally a new fish room dedicated to Discus ...... am figuring out what size tanks to us for breeding Tanks ....
Here is what I have come up with :

6 29 gallon ..... Breeding tank
2 40 Gallon Breeder ....... Breeding tank / quaritene tank
2 55 gallon for grow out tanks
2 75 gallon for grow out tanks

Sink

2 50 gallon storage tanks
have a airpump that will run 50 plus tanks no problem

Am not putting the tanks on a sump ... each tank will be independant .....
Have pellet stove to heat the cellar, which is well insulated .....

Any sugestions ?
Anything I should change or add ??

Will you be using sponge filters for them?

You may want to add another 75-55 combo sounds like you may have what 6-8 pairs going. That could mean a lot of fry

Yes. Will be using sponge filters and maybe a hob filter on the grow out tanks

You need fewer breeding tanks and more grow out tanks. A single good spawn can require 4 75 gallon tanks.

OK so this will be the make up of the fish room for my Discus, am planing to start with only 2 pairs for now and some young ones to grow out.

I will go with 4- 29 gallon breeder tanks.
I will have 6 -55 gallon grow out tanks
and also will have 2-125 gallon grow out tanks. With 2 more being added at a later date.
2- 40 gallon sick tanks

Will have the ability to add more grow out tanks when I need them.
Will also post pictures as I start the build

Let me know what ya all think

I find extra 29 gallon tanks are useful for moving new fry into before I move them into a 55 gallon, particularly if its only 30-40 fry. You should only need one 29 gallon quarantine tank.

Sounds fun Larry! Glad its happening! One thing you may want to consider is the size of your water storage... 100 gals water storage for 500 gal tanks..

You may find yourself short on water....i always run into that here and I am running about the same as you right now gal wise for both tanks and storage..it was okay for adults but water changes on fry tanks will use a lot more water.

Al

Larry, thanks for sharing. Austerlitz NY is such a beautiful place.... In New York, but in the Berkshire foothills too! I spent about 15 years in North Greenbush & West Sand Lake NY.
Once the NY exits get numbered with a 'B' on I-90 heading east... the towns get prettier!

We love Fish Room Project threads here at Simply D (a form of living vicariously), so be prepared for allot of questions!

You're going to have a very handsome fish room. You wouldn't like mine at all. It's all bare bones with all the hard pluming in sight.

Thank you Liz appreciate it. Yours is not so bad, was looking through your posts the othher day, as I am looking for all the differant ways to do this. I am going to have, for now, 2 125 gallon totes for water changing, and seeing I have hard water am looking for a water softning system for the whole house, which should help.
Thanks again for looking

read up here about water softener water before you take the leap. Discus do fine in hard water.

I agree with Liz, hard water is fine, even preferable for general keeping and grow out as it's inherently more stable due to the higher KH.

Looking great Larry! Is the fish room insid e your house? Do you have a humidity control plan or will your home HVAC take care of it? What are your fish plans?

Yeah, how much longer? This is going to be a beautiful fish room. Mine is functional because if all you want is "functional" like me, that's what you get. But I bet a lot of people are like me and settle for functionality alone have a big crush on the functional and beautiful. Please post more pics as you progress.

Hope to have water in the tanks this comming week, need to get my water storage / aging going. Am building a system to be able to keep them heated and cirulation through a 5 gallon home made filter.

So this is what I am ending up with for tanks:
29 gallon breeder tanks - 4
29 gallon hospital tank.
55 gallon growout tanks - 5
125 gallon growout tanks - 2
Will have 55 gallon water barrels (4) for growout water.
35 gallon RO container for breeding.

I am thinking I will start with some smaller fish to grow out.
1 adult breeder pair.

Any thoughts from you guys on what I am doing?

Really nice set-up you built yourself Larry. Man that's not a discus room, but a Discus Lounge I hope you have planned for a nice couch. You will be spending a lot of time in there and not just for water change or maintenance.

I saw in another post that you got your first discus Congrats now that fun beggins.
