Got em! Sat outside for about an hour waiting for them to get comfortable enough to come back. Looks to be about 2 maybe 3 pairs of them.

Not bluebirds but taken during the same shoot, super excited about this one. First time I've ever seen this bird here in the backyard and hardly ever see them out and about personally. What type of Waxwing? Cedar?

And my first real bird in flight shot I guess. Super hard because of the lighting and it was straight up but I'm happy with it for the first attempt. Vulture/Buzzard

Really nice shots Matt. I take it the blue bird with more blue is male? Love the clean lines with the black on the waxbill's face, and yellow tip on its tail. l'm also curious about that other bird in the shot with the orange face and chest. Do you know what it is?

Thanks Joe, yes the brightest blue are the males. I think the other bird is a House Finch but maybe Al can help ID that. I love those clean lines on the Waxwing too, really really nice looking bird.

Absolutely gorgeous Matt. Both the bluebirds and whatever that little beauty is. Perhaps Al will know. That new lens is a keeper. :)

Matt nice job on the bluebirds! Our's have yet to return here and start breeding.. nice to see yours setting up home. Great photos!

The waxwing is a cedar waxwing. They winter south thru the Usa, migrating from up north. The other waxwing we have in the states is the bohemian...those are found in the Northwest Usa to up north.

The small red one is a house finch... I get them up here alot as well.

Pretty productive day back.yard birding!

Great shots.

Since you have such great birds around, can you set up a perch using an interesting branch, near the feeder but with a bland neutral BG?
A little peanut butter on the backside of the branch. With a different BG these would be fantastic. Color and focus are spot on.

Thanks. I wonder if something like camo netting on poles might work? Do you mean physically setup a background like that? I think it actually may be best as there are no good tree lines or solid type backgrounds that I could shoot against out there. I'll have to play around with it and see. Where you see the brick in the background, I actually tried to sneak around to get it a full brick background but couldn't quite get around enough without spooking them. So you unfortunately see the electric meter and window on the back of the house.

Also want to set up the camera with a remote and get closer next time. This was me sitting in a chair outside handholding so could only get close with the lens.

If your BG is far enough away it will just blur nicely with the bokeh in your lens. So pick a spot that has the longest BG (and solid if possible) from the set up perch.
