So after a year I made the move and bought a Nikon D500 with a Nikor 50mm 1.8G lense. I know I basically bought a race car and don't know how to race but I want to learn and grow with the camera. I fumbled through and snapped some pictures to get the idea. I have a lot to learn. 107642107643107644107645

Well you certainly have a great subject!
Feel free to ask any questions about the camera functions or tips on shooting. Will be glad to help any way we can.

Hi Devon, you are really off to a great start. Both Stan and I have the D500 and I love mine. I must say you have some lovely subject manner to work with. :)

Thanks guys, This camera has alot of functions and features I have to learn. I think the more I play with it and try out different combinations of ISO and shutter speed render good pictures. Its just knowing what combo without taking 20 test pictures.

Start with Aperture Priority (A using the Mode button) Devon. The camera will handle shutter speed. You may need to bump the ISO a little keep the shutter speed up a bit. Look thru the view finder to see what your setting are and where the light meter is. The ISO button is on the right top and you can press it and use the from command dial (I think) to change it.

Devon here are two good references to get you started:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_N_bzhJAKms

This is really great for understanding the autofocus system in your camera.

https://www.rockynook.com/shop/photography/mastering-the-nikon-d500/

This is way better than your camera manual. Well written and explains everything your camera has to offer. Comes as an ebook as well (great for travel to have on a laptop or ipad etc.)

I played with it and I just couldn't get what I wanted, I haven't went outside yet and try some pictures so maybe it could do better. I'm not sure how much validity stands behind histograms but I have been getting the balance pretty good on some shots tonight. This camera is a blast, I will need to get a wider angle lense though this 50mm is great but I find my self having to back up pretty far to frame the picture properly seeing that this is basically a 75mm after the crop.

Looks like a good start to me! Are you using autofocus or manual? Reason I ask is some of those seem a bit soft or a bit off on the focus.

Debow

I am using the auto, I switches to single point last night. I see the softness too, I will try and provide some shooting data on the next pictures I upload.

Hi Devon, consider creating and adding your photos to a Flickr account. Use the account to link your photos here. It will be very easy to see your camera and lens settings in Flickr by clicking on the link in the thread.

When you are looking at a photo you will see a right-facing arrow to the right side of the photo. Click on that, pick the size you want and copy the link. Then paste it into the thread and you get this.

Pat I love the camera the more I get use to the button layout and use it the more I like it. I would say that it has everything I would ever need and more to get me buy for at least the next 5+ years, just expand on glass and knowledge. This camera is a beast!

Devon,
Your pics are looking great...and your model is a real sweet heart!:)

One thing you may want to play with is the effect of aperture on your images. Your camera has different modes. If you put it in AV (aperture priority) you can set it to various apertures and see how it affects depth of field.(the part of the image thats in focus) If you focus on the same subject and change the lens aperture you can learn alot thats useful. Like blurring the back ground of a picture or getting the most detail. Im not familiar with nikons but maybe the others can help guide you.

Looks good. Better focus for sure. Try shooting with less Depth of Field, lower F stop, f4, 5.6, something like that. You will have to adjust the the shutter speed (possibly ISO) accordingly.
The object is to soften up the background a bit. It will bring more attention to that great face.

So here are some new shots, I know them might be a little overexposed but I like how they came out. Like before these are straight out of the camera. I love how the eyes turned out the focus is great and the color is good.

These are really great. I like the B&W Lil Stinker!
Devon, might be able to help some more if you would include the shooting data. SS, f stop and ISO. (if you are in LR with the image hit the "i" key once for the time etc and a second time for the shooting data.)

I did not know that! Us old farts...

The third color shot is my favorite. Be careful with your framing, you don't want to cut off the hair at the top of the frame.
The data looks fine, I love the shallow depth of field that the 50mm 1.8 gives you.
Looks like there is plenty of ambient light, did you try some shots with a lower ISO or faster SS?

Those blue eyes are killer!

Thanks! I noticed that the framing was a bit off, I was a little quick to get the shot as she won't stay in one pose for more than a second. And yes the 50 is a nice little lense I watched a lot of reviews about having one and for the price why not. I did try a lower ISO but it brought out a lot of skin tone differences veins, redness and other features I didn't care for. So I bumped it up to washe out some of it. This child is so white she is praticaly see through lol I have been paying attention to the exposer meter and making adjustment +1 or -1 on ISO or shutter speed.
