Hi all,
I mention Gimp alot here as its a great free alternative to Photoshop. Most decent photo editting software comes with your basic tools to sharpen an image, clean it up, post process it so its a polished photo. The software interface and tool names change but they all do basically the same thing...manipulate the data in your image. Thats whats cool about digital imaging. Many softwares out there also digital image filters that you can apply. Consider them prepackage porcessing tools. They often run a script that does this or that. Photoshop has these filters, Gimp does as well. Gimp is open source software which basically means that the code is available for anyone to play with. It can lead to some interesting developments. Its why I like Open Source.


I thought I would take some time to run thru an example of Gimps Filters. I have a picture here...

Its your average picture..Nothing special. Just something I snapped from the window while driving around this summer.

The filters I show here are mostly using the defaults to save time. You can easily intensify or weaken the effects. Some of the effects are subtle, so much so that you will have to look carefully, others are a bit, well.. excessive.

It just adds another element of fun to the hobby. The really nice thing is an okay picture if you just look at it like a picture is just that..an okay picture. But if you take some time to play around with filters and Tools, you can come up with some pretty cool stuff regardless of the original image.
