Sometimes you can go somewhere all set to take Pictures. You know what to expect , you have a goal in mind and you have time to think it out ...other times a photo op just comes along and you "wing it" and hope for the best.

I didn't expect this flock of Brant, and I didnt think they'd fly with the sun to their back... It just happened. I like when this happens, forces you to always have the camera out and ready.:)

Birds watchers often keep a " life list".. A list of birds that they have seen. I added Brant to it decades ago but in all my years of bird watching I never saw them without a spotting scoop. They winter off the CT Coastline and are very shy. I've never seen them except as a distant set black blobs bobbing.... So though not a lifer for me, they are a special treat I did not at all anticipate seeing like this...

One of those times I am glad I am both a bird watcher and photographer.:) It rarely gets better than this.

Wonderful photos, Al !
You really got lucky with this opportunity - I'm sure it seldom occurs.

That first photo is a really interesting perspective, I really like it. Same type of bird but because of the location of each, all different sizes. However just glancing at it makes them all look like they are all at the same distance, really cool.

Thanks Paul. Im guessing by their numbers these guys were migrating through heading back up to Canada now that winters finally starting to break here. There way more of them than usual. The state park I took these at is a well known stop over for all sorts of migrating birds.

Thanks Matt,
I like it also alot. I like the way its not just a siloette the birds still have faint details. And they are all pretty much the same exposure.
