Will one teaspoon per 20 gallons of Kanamycin Sulfate (100%) kill my filter bacteria in my hospital tank? If I treat my fish in the hospital tank for internal bacteria will I re-infect them when I return them to the main tank? According to Angel Plus I am to use it every other day for 10 days, what do you think?

Thanks for reading and any help you can provide.

Kanamycin is an old time broad spectrum antibiotic, so it'll wipe out the biofilter.

As for re-infection, that's a complicated issue. In most cases, fish that are not in good health will pick up infections. If the other fish in your main tank are not sick, then putting a healthy fish back is not going to be a problem. Just make sure to give your fish some time to recover. Make sure it's eating for 2 - 3 days before returning it to the main tank.

When I treat with kanamycin I do it in a clean hospital tank with a clean, uncycled sponge filter. I change 90-95% of the water every day and re-dose the tank. This way you don't need to worry about the biofilter.
