I attended a two day workshop this weekend given by the photographer Mike Moats. It was an awesome experience and well worth the time. Each day was split into presentation with a couple of hours of shooting. Mike setup several stations around the room with various objects. First day Mike covered equipment useful for macro photography and a bit around his experience. He is mostly self taught and thru selling his images in art shows has determined what works for him and appeals to people whom bought his images. He does a lot of two subject compositions such as a leaf on tree bark or leaf on a leaf. He also does something called soft focus flowers where just a leading edge of the flower is in focus and the rest is out of focus. Here's a couple of my images from the first day.

I had a hard time getting into this collection as it was not visually interesting to me. So I was really surprised that I ended up with something interesting.

This collection was a little more fun.

Turns out that Mike shoots a lot of his images at F/36.0 to capture all the details. Apparently you are not supposed to do that. So much fun when you do not know the rules. :)

This was a large shell with so much rich color and texture.

Most of my NADA images are shot f16+, done a bunch close to 22 of a 6-7" fish less than a foot away from me. Throw the rule book at me I'll burn it :D Of course it's not a macro lens but still! I very much dislike boundaries.

Great Macro shots Pat. The shells just have insane amounts of colors. Macro can be very challenging but so rewarding as you could stare at the details for hours.

He does some cool stuff. Must have been a fun workshop.
Macrolenses and true wide angle lenses take a lot of work!

Thanks Matt :D That shell was gorgeous. Nice hint on the aperture for discus. :)

He does Stan and it was a fun workshop. Of course I only do macro when there is nothing else to do :shocked2:. I did walk away with a few tools in the bag. :D
