Since I ended up with all the pictures taken by Ricardo during the 2018 show (used my computer for processing the pictures) I am sorting the pictures by tank. It is a lenghty process and I am up to tank 46. So if you want to see more pics give a shout out here.

Good to see there is plenty of interest. :D Here is tanks 1-5. Some of the images have little to no post processing. Ricardo and I were both were trying to get the best "in camera" picture we could. Note that not all the fish behaved for photos.

There were actually quite a lot of exhibitor's Liz. Besides Hans, we have Peter Low (Singapore), Kai Mei (US), Francis Hu (UK), Al Castro (US), Hugo of Santarém Discus (wilds), Gold Coast Aquatics (US, Ricky Lim), Larry Bugg and others. Perhaps Keith, Rick or someone can list some others.

That is because they want you to feed them. Feed them then grab a chair and sit with your face about level with the tank and watch them for a while. Soon they will forget you are there and snap away.

Am I the only one disappointed with the quality of most of these discus? I feel like Nada sadly isn't what it used to be. Honestly, I think alot of hobbyists have far better fish than most of the ones at NADA. To give some sort of idea of quality as to whats going around, hear are some pics of discus from a retailer hear in Australia. And these are retail fish on the open market, not show winning discus. It seems that the discus at NADA aren't even as nice as half the discus going around in retail.

Zac, as secretary of NADA we put on the show and folks bring fish to display at the show. The purpose of NADA is to help educate people about discus. We work very hard to put on the show every two years with lots of time and effort of many folks to make the show a success. The show is way more then just about the fish...it's the people meeting and making relations which last a lifetime...it's about the speakers to come to help make people aware about various aspects of discus keeping etc etc. I consider this show very successful. There were some very nice fish there and to truly determine the quality you really needed to be at the show to see the fish in person. :)

This sounds like a comment from someone that has no idea how a show works. NADA doesn't own the discus, nor does it have any control over what fish are entered. It's been a unique couple of years in the retail market here in the US, this year we had great participation from multiple vendors, however, only one or two of them have been in the business much more than a year, and it was their first show. Add to that we had a much higher than ever before participation (which we love btw) of individual owners. For many this was a first time show experience. Our shows are to be experienced in person, not judged by a few Internet experts based on one picture of one fish alone.

Well said Pat and Rick. NADA is about way more than just the fish brought for judging. Anyone who has attended, I have been at the last 4 of them, will tell you they had a blast and were sorry to see it end. And look forward to the next one in 2 years. The group of people who set it all up deserve nothing but high praise and I might add that it is all volunteer work! People who bring fish pay a high price for shipping them to the show.

NADA has a detailed score card that all judges must be familiar with and judge by. When their are disagreements among the judges they hash it out and come to a consensus.

I agree that the majority of the fish pictured were not the quality of the fish I've seen at past NADA's. Rick gave reasons for that. I love seeing the best of the best fish but like many others have said, the show itself is not what makes NADA special for Discus nuts.

Maybe I am missing the point. I know how a show works, and i'm sorry to be playing devils advocate here but I just haven't seen many nice discus from NADA. I understand that the quality of the fish isn't everything, and the whole experience as a whole is important to those who are attending. I am not downing the event itself, just the quality of many of the discus. I don't think this is a bad event, I'm sure the volunteers work hard at making it an enjoyable experience. Unfortunately for me personally, I view a show as a place where one may go to see some amazing discus, not merely a social event. Whilst I believe it will be good to talk to judges, breeders etc. at the show, that is not what I personally am looking for. I don't need a show to talk to breeders, retailers judges Etc. I am not basing it off a single photo of a single discus, I have seen numerous photo's. To be fair, I may not have seen every single discus, but I have seen many photos here on SD as well as on FB and other places. I am also aware that people give more weight to certain traits than others, but I haven't seen any that excel in any single trait.

Maybe I am missing the point. I know how a show works, and i'm sorry to be playing devils advocate here but I just haven't seen many nice discus from NADA. I understand that the quality of the fish isn't everything, and the whole experience as a whole is important to those who are attending. I am not downing the event itself, just the quality of many of the discus. I don't think this is a bad event, I'm sure the volunteers work hard at making it an enjoyable experience. Unfortunately for me personally, I view a show as a place where one may go to see some amazing discus, not merely a social event. Whilst I believe it will be good to talk to judges, breeders etc. at the show, that is not what I personally am looking for. I don't need a show to talk to breeders, retailers judges Etc. I am not basing it off a single photo of a single discus, I have seen numerous photo's. To be fair, I may not have seen every single discus, but I have seen many photos here on SD as well as on FB and other places. I am also aware that people give more weight to certain traits than others, but I haven't seen any that excel in any single trait.

I also am not a judge,but I think most of the pics do look like run of the mill discus,so to speak.I tend to agree with Zac on his observations,on the shape especially.

From a person who just returned to fishkeeping after 15 years (and relatively new to the forum), I want to encourage the posting of the pics. Opinions of the grade of the fish, while important, is not the aim of the pictures in my opinion. It encourages all of us to aim for the highest care of our beloved discus. If you grade it less, then aim for better in your tank and with your fish. If you grade it as beautiful (as I do), then be encouraged to learn all you can to care for one’s own discus. Discus keeping is a lifetime learning experience. I have benefited from every post that I have read on the forum.

Just got my 10 from Kenny’s yesterday. They are doing great with a nervous caregiver. I hope one day to attend a NADA meeting and greeting those by face whom I am just learning by name & post. My understanding is that I have 2 years to wait.
