New to forum not new to Discus

Hello everyone. I have kept fish tanks in one way or another my entire life. I have been in to Reef keeping for the past few years. But after much debate I have decided to get out of Saltwater and get back into Discus.
I have a 135g with internal overflow and fish room in my basement. Everything will be fully disassembled and cleaned thoroughly. I plan on keeping a freshwater refugium and a fully planted tank. Since all of my equipment is very high end I will not need to purchase that much to get this going.
I do have a quick question though. The pipes running from my main floor to the basement will need to be cleaned somehow. Any suggestions on this?

I wonder if potassium permanganate would work. If you hold water in the pipes for a few hours it should destroy all organics. It is cheap and Seachem prime will neutralise it instantly, making it safe.
Just don’t get it in your eyes while it is active (purple).

Curious if you could give more detail on this...

HI and welcome Marc.
Balancing discus with a high tech planted tank is a though welcoming back in freshwaters IMO. Try to at least start with full grown discus to make things easier along the way .

If the pipes were used to carry your 40 ppt salt water I think that you shouldn't bother to sterilize them at all , but if you want to do it anyway , bleach or PP solution would oxidize any organics and bacteria left in them .

My sump for my Reef tank s in the basement. Main tank is on the main level. It’s the drain and return pipe that I think should be cleaned.

How are these pipes connected to the rest of your system?
I'm a plumber... I can help you with this... Are you saying that the old salt sump is in the basement and the old salt tank is in main level? But now you are going to switch both over to freshwater?
