First and foremost, I would like to thank Al for doing this exciting friendly competition and providing us some awesome fish. Well about myself, I'm not new to this hobby and I've breeding/raising discus since 2010. But I became more passionate about creating my own line of strain back in 2015. My main goal was to create a Giant Flora 14-bars somewhat similar to 9-bars but more refined with unique pattern. The reason for joining this competition is to explore more knowledge and gauge my skill level.

Current setup for this competition:
- 20G breeder tank
- Sponge filter up to (40G)
- Hydor 120 watts heater.
- Airstone
- 40 watts LED daylight bulb

118500

Current parameters:
- Aged tap water treated with Seachem Safe
- 83.4F but adjusted to around 86F
- 284 TDS
- 7.4-7.8 Ph

118501

I'll apply the same strict and proactive routine just like my other previous batches.

Such as follows:

Feeding - 4x daily
- 1st feeding 7:00 AM
- 2nd feeding 12:00 PM
- 3rd feeding 4:00 PM
- 4th feeding 7:00 PM
Note: will increase the feeding as they grow to support their rapid growth.

Water Change
- I'll be using aged tap water only until up to 6 months old
- 150%-200% water change on a daily basis.
- 1st WC 8AM either 50% or 100%
- 2nd WC 8PM or later 100%
- will wipe the tank once a week

Crossing my fingers too for tomorrow Brian .
Two Qts on your routine.
You said to use aged tap up to 6 months ? What else do you plan next and why change the curent routine at 6th month.
Why only small feeds at start ? Just to avoid bloat or is there something else to it ?

Good luck Brian and we hope for photos of discus from you tommorow .

Finally, the wait is over. They have arrived perfectly and no death so far.

118590

118591

I added aquarium salt one spoonful per 10 gallon and 1 and half cup of Stress Guard.

118592

Shipping: I received them up side down from the mailman and didn't seem to be bother what it was since it doesn't have sticker saying Fragile, perishable, or handle with care.

Recommendation: Shipping fish is not new to me, I shipped fish across the state in the past as little as dime to quarter size to even adult size. One thing I learned was to ensure to put precautionary sticker or label to make them aware that the package is fragile and careful handling is a must. All in all, the packaging was excellent and didn't noticed any leaks. The water level is enough as well as the oxygen. Also the heat packs was adequate since still warm when I touch it.

Here are the stuff I used for my shipping boxes.

I created this label and printed out at my workplace. The Styrofoam shipping boxes came from my wife's work so it's free.

Bryan Im glad you got them and they are alive after being in the box since Monday..

Just a note though, every box did have a label on it that said "live fish .. this end up." It was placed on the top of the box in bright fluorescent colors.

I always do this.

I really like the stickers you had printed up. I can't do it, but there is a very nice printer run by an old couple who likes me. I need to see them for my new business cards, now that I'm grooming from home. They could make them for me and not charge me an arm and a leg. I used to do their dog before it died. They like me.

I don't ship often, but I do ship. My signature here for a while was "SHIPPING IS CURSED". The stickers are just a tiny bit of insurance that the box gets treated appropriately.

Yes! Absolutely true, if it wasn't for excellent packaging. I don't think they would have survived. Sadly, the mailman didn't pay attention to the note.

You're absolutely correct, the note was there on the top portion but sadly the mailman didn't pay attention. But due to your excellent packaging, they've all made it. This is a good learning experienced for me, I'll try to ship them this way to cut cost since shipping always been a deal breaker for customers.

BBS exclusively until to this day and started giving them beefheart flakes 2 days ago. Then next month I'll start introducing them with my secret homemade beefheart mixed with growth booster.

Filip
10-10-2018, 05:10 PM
From your documented experience so far , it seems to me that for some reason BBS outperform other foods for growouts at this young age .

About introducing your BH mix . Why next month , why not tommorow ?

I don't want to introduce them too early, it might be too hard for them to process the food. BBS is pack in protein about 60%-65% and easy to digest at young age. I'll keep continue feeding as long as they take it but I'll try to wean them once they pass quarter size.

They are now exactly 2 weeks under my care from this day on. I'm the one who received them the last so they are in the bag for 5 days but luckily they have all survived. So much improvement are noticeable looking back 2 weeks ago. The biggest one is now probably larger than a quarter and the smallest one is almost a quarter size but there's still room for growth. Their appetite are rapidly increasing so I'll provide more solid food moving forward and slowly stop feeding BBS. More updates are coming in later weeks.

Wow mate, those guys are growin like weeds! Will they eat all of that food or will you siphon off anything uneaten at a certain point?

I don't think they would eat all that food since they're not used to that yet but I'll definitely siphon any uneaten food after 2 hours or do a complete water change. One thing I learned these past few years is that providing more food and spreading them would help alleviate aggression so that the small one can eat as well. If you gave them a chunk or cube the bully one will take over and won't share it. That's why I don't feed them beefheart and freeze dried cubes. If you notice my group is growing at the same pace.

This is great advice from your observation and experience Bryan. I missed this part of your comment earlier today. I am having issue atm with 2 discus on the bottom of the pecking order of my 8 adult fish. I'm gonna cube my BH mix smaller and spread it out across the whole 6' of my 125 gal. Hopefully they will get more food. Thanks for sharing this great tip!

I never even thought about that. One of those things that's so obvious yet really isn't. All right that might not have been my best quote ever but you know what I mean! +1 here. The shape on that second one is really sweet--nice round forehead. You're definitely the front-runner! I'll try to do as you suggest and use your great results as motivation to keep up and do my best. But honestly... there's no doubt you're going to have awesome adult fish from this group (and they will probably look better than mine.) Oh well... we'll try to keep the pressure on! - I got the beefheart flakes from Dan, he's sponsor here.
- I start feeding D-50 once they reach about quarter size.
- about 2 months old

Hello, Interesting questions..following this... also, what's the reasoning/benefit for not turning off lights? ( faster metabolism therefore faster growth??)
Love the mini pancakes images!

- Benefits of not turning the lights off is for faster growth, meaning they would continue eating 24/7 non-stop so growth is continues. BBS is very active when lights in ON and fry is attracted to moving object. So I hope you get the picture.

Try making your own homemade beefheart mixed without any Krill. Most commercial had krill on it as one of the main ingredient.

I would also highly recommend Al's Discus Chow-16 0z-.8mm due to high protein content and perfect size for juvenile discus. I feed mine morning and night time with great results as you can see with my previous pictures.

Ingredients: Marine Proteins (fish meal, Krill, Squid in a proprietary blend),wheat gluten,maize starch,Fish oil,lecithin,alfalfa protein,yeast,seaweed extract,vitamins,minerals

Analysis:

I think Al posted somewhere that he had an issue with the manufacturer he was using for the Discus Chow and unfortunately was going to be out for awhile until he could make alternative arrangements. (I've been digging into food threads!) Can't remember when he posted that, however, so hopefully he'll restock soon, and it wouldn't hurt to check with him.

Questions I get from members.

What do you feed your fry at early stage? and why?
- I feed my fry BBS until they reach about 1.5" and then slowly transition to solid food such as high protein beefheart mixed flakes, Tropical Discus Gran D-50 plus baby, Discus chow, and golden pearls.
- I feed the following food as mentioned above due to high protein content and easy to digest. Highly digestible food are easy to process and that means better nutrients absorption, so therefore my fry gets consistent and better growth rate as a results. I tend to stay away from FDBW and HM beefheart mixed at early stage because they can cause intestinal blockage and also BH create foul smell, affects your water quality and if left uneaten it can rotten easily at high temp.

What's your WC routine? what percentage? why?
- I do my WC twice daily before feedings, so that the new foods doesn't get mix up with the uneaten and rotten foods as well as other unwanted stuff.
- I used aged, heated, and dechlorinated tap water only. 150% - 200%
- For me frequent large WC is a must for growing discus. So that they will grow faster, stronger, healthier, and resilient. Also helps reduce unwanted inhabitants.

What's your temp? why? what's the advantage and disadvantage of high temp?
- I keep my temp @ 86F
- I like to keep them @ high temp so they are always active, hungry and eat more food through out the day.
- Keeping them at high temp would increase their metabolism. So therefore, they would consume more food as a results growth rate also increase. However, keeping them at high temp could also increase potential threat from harmful bacterial. that's why consistent frequent large WC is very important.

Not always the case, I had some fish that I've grown them to almost 8" with just flakes alone. it's a slow growth but steady and healthy but you'll get there.

Do you wipe down the surfaces daily or just do water changes? I'm trying to better understand what is most important.

About 10 years ago, I had a good friend who partnered with me to produce discus fry. Al was homebound due to MS but loved to raise discus. So I would bring over the spawns for him to raise. Al only fed flakes. But he made a 40% water change after every meal - that is to say, breakfast, lunch and dinner. In those days, I would bring over fry that was 2 weeks free swimming. The fry he raised very much resembled this batch. They were all tall and round and, at this stage, all the fish were uniform in size. When people wanted to buy discus, I just referred them to Al. He was home all the time, so it worked well all around. Al has since passed away from his disease.

Thanks, Willie

I do twice daily water changes and wipe down the surface twice a week. If you do frequent water changes, the build up is it wasn't that bad.

Bryan, thanks for answering detailed questions about your approach. Been also trying on my end also to figure out what's most important especially since I've had issues.

How often do you clean your sponges and how? I can see that squeezing out my sponge in a bucket is needed more regularly than I thought, maybe especially in the absence of a secondary filter--otherwise I end up with lots of particulate matter even after a 100% water change. Also, how long will you let the canister go?

I cleaned my sponge filter at least once every two weeks. I'm only using one sponge filter since I'm already heavy on water changes. Keep in mind you don't that much filtration as long as you keep doing twice daily WC.

When they reach about 3 months old but will change if bioload and feeding increases as well as water change. I try not limit my water change and also good filtration would be ideal for overcrowding tank especially when you have huge batch.

I am so glad that I've been concentrating on my garage build instead of my discus room. I'm now questioning part of my set-up. The grow out section is being is now full of question instead of being settled :o

Feeding is also an aspect that I've been looking been looking a lot. my simple conclusion is that I need to maintain feeding daily BB brine shrimps for a lot longer, I normally stop once they accept 200-300us golden pearls.

I'm also going to increase the amount of water change clearly daily 100 are not enough. This tread is clearly showing me this.

AS for Piwo injecting oxygen in his tank, he explained on Diskusportal forum several years ago that he had discovered his fry grow much better when the water was almost at full oxygen saturation hence in injected pure oxygen to aerate his water.

Cheers,
Fred

Cheers,
Fred

Thank you Fred! It's good to see you here my friend. Keep feeding them up to 12 weeks old combined with golden pearls is also good. Only feed fresh BBS if more 24 hours had past after hatching otherwise discard it. I only make BBS that would last me for 12 hours and then I'll make a new batch so they have endless supply of fresh BBS.

I'm not doing this just for myself or the trophy but also for those who wants to learn how to raise discus properly. I hope you guys learning something out of it.:)

I'm enamored with what you have been able to accomplish. I'm new to Simply Discus and this thread was recommended to be read by someone after asking about growth and stunting in the beginners thread. Your work is inspiring and I'm hoping one day I too can breed and raise discus fry as successfully as you and many others competing in this contest. I had no idea this was a thing and I'm absolutely addicted now! I've learned so much that I wish I would have learned prior to receiving my own discus. I love the idea about the lights on 24/7, wish I thought of that (though at times it was an accident when I did leave them on). With your water changes, do you have a system set up to make this automated or are you just using a normal tube and siphon to get the job done because I couldn't tell by the photos. Also, that secret potion comment was quite elusive. haha What would it be? ;)

Thanks for following my thread and I hope you're learning something from it. As for the WC, I don't have automated setup and I'm still using the normal tube with water pump attached to it to drain the water a little faster. Also I have a separate pump to refill the tank.

Hi Bryan, through out your grow-out thread you have mentioned about feeding a BH mix when the fry got older but as best I can tell you are only feeding dry foods? Are you feeding a BH mix currently?

I started giving them beefheart mix yesterday before I do my WC.

I only did one water change that day because added some magic potion and I want to make sure it gets absorb by them.

Yes, I agree that's why it's a contest otherwise we'll copy each other and that would defeat the purpose of the contest.

This is acrylic tank, so the blue background came with it.

Oracal 631. A bit less sticky and easier to work with than 651.

Glad to help. I should mention that 651 is fine (I have it on two tanks), just the adhesive is really strong. It's tricky to smooth even with water sprayed down.

Quick update...I haven't been paying attention to them much lately due to overwhelming work. I'm sort of busy with new batch of fry and other breeding project as well as work related. But routine remain the same as usual and hard to tell if any increase in growth. So I let you guys be the judge.

How did you manage 100% water changes twice a day without losing the tanks cycle? I had to re-cycle my tank and lower my water changes to 50% twice a day. I thought quickly when I lost my cycle and purchased a small HOB and added my maintanks filter media.

You don't need a cycle tank as long as the replacement water is stable. In Asia, they don't even used sponge filter just airstone for water agitation and oxygenation since they do frequent water changes.

Very nice progress Brian . They seem to be growing "by the book " so far .
Maybe you ve all ready mention it but what kind of discus flakes were you using , are they from Tropical too ?
Also on sanitizing .... How often and why do you sanitize the tank ? Do you occasionally PP the filters and discus too , or just the tank walls and equipment ?

Keep up the good work and updates in your thread Brian.
