Hi,I have been in the hobby for 40+yrs.and went into planted tanks about 5 yrs. ago.I went all out with lighting, ferts and pressurized co2. Been pretty successful after a few algae attacks,it is really all about a balance of those three things.I waited until i retired to get into Discus so I would have the time to put into it.Got a lot of great advice and made a few mistakes but now have 6 beauties soon to be 8 in a 90 gallon tank.here is a video of my 40gal. breeder and 45 gallon planted tanks taken last night. As you can see I won'y be winning any awards for photography lol...

Really nice looking tanks Patty! I remember when I had a CRS & CBS shrimp tanks in Australia I would do the exact same shrimp count...a little too regularly actually, haha. What is the substrate in the 20gal? Is it shrimp sand? Are you dosing ferts?

Thanks Daniel,
The substrate is called, Samurai Soil. It’s suppose to be good for shrimp, doesn’t change ph or increase hardness.
I just recently started dosing ferts. I picked Easy Green from the Aquarium Co-op because it’s shrimp safe and very easy to use. It’s all premixed liquid ferts, so I just squirt once per 10 gal and have 3 different bottles. It’s my first try with ferts, but so far so good.

I really like Discluv’s Discus tank. I think “less is more” with discus tanks. The discus are the star attraction and when a simple wood piece and a few well chosen plants are added, it really makes a statement.
I like your geo’s too. I’d like to try a group of them one day.

Thanks. Yeah, I know a lot of discus keepers subscribe to the "less is more" and "discus as star attraction" idea.
Personally, with adult discus, I like a lot of plants and dont feel they take anything away from fish. (shrug) ~ to each his own.

Hello. It's been a while. I moved from LA in 2008, so I had to get rid of my fish. I finally setup another discus just last year. Minnesota water is awful so I had to take a lot of extra steps to make it work, mainly having my own RO system. Happy to say, it's been going good. I decided to do a planted tank this time, so I've spent the last year learning a lot. Here are my results as of two days ago. Glad to be back.

You have a very nice planted tank in your video .
How long do you have this set up and keep your discus in there ?
The only thing I would change is to add some more discus in it .

I really love the carpet of plants in your tank. It looks like it would be hard to maintain. Is it difficult fert or light wise? Do you need CO2? A lot of trimming? I’m thinking there’s a reason everyone doesn’t have it. Is this the culmination of mastering planted tanks?
I like your shrimp tank too. You have an artistic way of turning your rock into a mountainside that I get lost in. Very cool-very Zen. What is that glass tube suction cupped to the glass?

Well scaped !
Good mix of T5 bulbs. Which one are you using as Red, Blue, Green and especcially which white 6000K ?
looking to refurbish my UFO lighting ;)

Try to fix ricchardia or Java mosses on tree. you will get a nice Bonsai! this is the actual trend
lift up your Ph probe to avoid leakage in the tank ;)

There's a risk to not fit with discus needs after a year. They still be young and need a lot of food which is not desirable with algae growth.
You are engaged in a extremely regular maintenance!

they are: 6500k, Flora, Super Actinic, Coral Plus, and Powerveg 633. and the order of bulbs in the fixture also contribute factors.

Can you explain "Ph leak in the tank"
i hate moss and try to get rid of it then replace with other plants. they are all over the place and stick pretty well to substrate. i dont think i can %100 remove moss but keep them to the minimal by picking them out some at each water change.

WC 40-50% weekly with vacuum substrate and blow detritus

To my opinion and experience would be better with less than 30% twice or three time a week.
Bulk will stay two long on the bottom if removed only one time a week.

With this type of scape don't create too much fluctuation

Your Ph probe is filled with a solution. If the head cap is bellow water level there's a risk of leakage in aquarium water

Thank you to everyone for posting the pictures of your planted tanks. The work and the creativity is impressive. When one considers the maintenance to just the discus in a bare tank then to add to that the plants would be beyond my time commitment. I think the fish would be more comfortable and less stressed living in a planted tank than a bare tank.

One thing i can tell that this set up is may not suitable to raise juvenile since we have to feed them a lot. it can take more effort to do water change more than one time per week. on this set-up i just do 40-45% per week.
