I used to run one of these back in the 70s, it did a great job then to clear up what HOB filters wouldn’t touch. I was thinking of converting a cartridge filter into one because the original Vortex were only good for 200 gals at best. I wanted the invisible water look.

I never used a vortex, i did use my magnum pleated with D.E.
The D.E. powder I was told can be very hazardous to your lungs. I started using a good mask when messing with the D.E. powder as it just takes off and gets in the air rather easily when scooping or pouring into the filter.
Better safe than sorry.

Marineland is selling an in-tank version that is just a magnum cartridge filter loaded up with DE. It looks awful small and I don’t want it in the display. So I looked at small pool filters that have cartridges, and found one for less than $50, so I might try it for fun. It’s supposed to do 1000gph but with DE in it I’m sure it will be less flow.
