Hey All,
I recently acquired 11 of Al's wonderful Blue Turq/Snakeskin fry. These are from the same parents as the fry which were used in the 2018 Grow-out Contest. Reading through those contest threads inspired me to have a little contest of my own, against myself.
The purpose of this is to keep myself motivated, maintain a record of my endeavors, and most importantly, obtain feedback and suggestions from experienced hobbyists!
Stock:
- 11 Blue Turq/Snakeskin fry from Al
- all 11 arrived between 1.75-2.0 inches
- received late May
- not much color as of now, maybe faint blue. A couple do show slight SS patterning.
Tank & Filtration:
- starting in a 40 Breeder (so technically 46 gallons) painted on the bottom, back, and one side
- no lighting for now, I may add something later
- sponge filter rated for 50 gallons. I don't trust those ratings much but it's definitely sufficient for now.
Water:
- temperature kept around 85-86.
- Indiana tap water, aged with an air stone and heater. More details in the WC section.
- PH settles between 7.8-8.2 depending on the season.
- water is very hard. I don't know specifics, but around here we call it liquid rock.
Feeding Plan:
- 4 times a day : 7am manual, 11am auto feeder, 3pm auto feeder, 7pm manual
- BH Mix Flakes, Discus Granules D-50 Plus Baby, HBH Flake Seafood Lovers
- later I will introduce FDBW and frozen BH mix
- much later I will introduce Sera Discus Granules and Hikari Vibra Bites
Water Changes and Cleaning
- two WC daily : 50% in the morning, ~95% in the evening
- due to space limitations, I have only a 40B tank for aging. Since I will do ~150% daily, this of course means it can't all be aged 24 hours
- the morning 50% WC will use 12 hour aged water. The evening 95% WC will use half 24hr and half 12hr aged water
- this WC schedule is where I'm least certain of how good my plans are, and would welcome feedback
- vacuumed at each WC
- glass scraped and/or wiped once a week
Thank you for reading! Pictures to follow soon, with updates as I can.
