Well I decided last Friday that I was going to give this bare bottom tank thing a try. Have a 45 empty so I filled it up move a filter out of my 125 added to the 45 and called Hans :). Bought 8 2 1/2 discus from him. Delivery today :). Sitting around with a cup of coffee this morn and I realized a 45 was only going to work short term. I’d need a bigger tank. But I’ve got time :). So I checked Craigslist than went to letgo. Found a nice acrylic 90 with stand and hood for $500. Fish were due at 10:30 it’s now 11:45. Let me ask a few questions about the tank. Well it comes with fish! Come on I don’t want your fish. Before I do anything let me see what else is available. Another acrylic 90 with an acrylic stand!!! And hood!! $150!!! Hello when can I pickup my tank :). 12:15 still no fish :(. Well I’m not waiting I jump into wife’s outback and off I go. Get on the highway yep the fish are at the door. Oh well $150 for a 90. Hunny just check the fish to see if their alive. YOU BOUGHT FISH!! And why did you take my truck? How the fish look. There good! Ok talk to you later. Later... I can’t believe you bought more discus!! Hunny can you give me a hand at the truck. I think she almost fainted when she saw the tank :). Busy day!!127967 and if it wants to go out dancing it’s got this funny hat127968and of course the new addition 127969127970127971127972 will try for some better pic tomorrow.

I got 2 of his new white leopard ,2 leopard,2 checkerboard and 2 German wonder. They came labeled 2 in a bag. But they all looked pink when they went into the tank. They are allready starting to color up. The checkerboard,German wonder and leopard are all showing correctly. But the white leopard I think will have to grow into its color. It’s looking the same colors as the checkerboard now.

Yes I like adding pics :). Here’s this morns. 127974127975127976. In the first pic I think the high red/white one and the low one on left are the white leopard. Below the high one and on the bottom right are the checkerboard. Under the checker is the leopard and the 2 with the stripes are the German wonder.

Awesome story Tom! Brings back memories of my early addiction. I would suggest getting help before its too late but its probably untreatable at this point. :)

Oh and not only did I enjoy the read I picked up a new source for used stuff.. never heard of letgo... craigslist all the time..
But letgo... nope. Checked it out... not too shabby. Thanks.

Thanks Vinni! Yes I’m happy with it. It’s got some scratches but I bought a Removal kit so hopefully that works. But when full the scratches are barely noticeable. And the new guys are doing good! All eating fdbw now so all is good :). They’ve started swimming the whole tank and not all schooled up so they are getting comfortable. Been changing 30% daily but there is an ammonia showing. It’s at .25. Guess my old media wasn't enough.128037

128139 well these are Hans new white leopards. What does everyone think? Could they be something different??

danotaylor
06-25-2020, 01:04 AM
It is very difficult to say Tom as most names are simply trade names given by the breeder. I don't really see anything that would distinctly identify them as white leopards. Hans site has no images to compare them too, and the other Google pics of Stendker white leopards really look nothing like them I'm sorry to say...white base with red dots, no pattern as on the one on the right in your pic at least
Yours are clearly in PB family of discus and not dissimilar to many of the PB strains that have a variety of different names, but since they're Stendker, they do look more like Stendker Red Pigeons than anything else they offer.
Maybe send some pics back to Hans and see if he can confirm. I have never purchased from him but going by what others have said here on SD I'm sure he will assist you.

Well those 2 are checkerboard discus. Maybe they were mislabeled?

danotaylor
06-25-2020, 03:15 PM
I'd say that's a strong possibility Tom...the one you posted with the white blotch pattern looks more like a checkerboard to me, and it's pattern should spread to cover it's whole body as it matures. The other looks closer to a Stendker fire red...if you ordered one of those...

Iminit
06-25-2020, 03:48 PM
No the red one looked more like the other when I first got them. Thank you I think you are correct. I looked at his pic for 3” checkers and it does look like what I thought was the white leopards. :). Go figure :). Will see as they grow!

Ok stop there! We all know it’s J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS. Please practice this for the upcoming season! Ok peewee you’ve got to understand Big Ben. It’s very important to a fish room. 128176 You’ll notice the thermometer on the left. This tells me the room temp and how hard my heaters need to work to warm the tanks. Next on the right is the all important humidity meter. This tells me how much water is evaporating and how much I will need to top off. Peewee I’m just shocked you don’t have this type of vital information in your fish room.

peewee1
06-28-2020, 09:59 AM
Almost Peewee. Not trying to get to far off topic here but..... pizza, wings, beer, this fish room and the Miami Dolphins. Bye bye Brady...

Not too far off target. A Dolphin is a fish and as far as Brady goes....he's a bottom feeder. Further the thread began asking is something was a "White Leopard". As you well know the State of Florida has not one but three NFL teams. One being the Jaguars. Another in a state to the north of Florida has a team called the Panthers. With regard to leopard, I will offer this, Black panther, a big cat (of any species, but most commonly a jaguar or a leopard) whose coloration is entirely black. My question is, other than a sick discus, why has no one ever developed a Black Leopard discus? They could call it a Panter discus if they had a mind to.

peewee1
06-28-2020, 10:09 AM
I do have a clock but I use it as a gauge. The clock is round so from time to time I snag a discus from the tank and proceed to plaster it onto said clock. What I am looking for is does the discus shape match that of the clock? If so then I know I have the much sot after discus shaped discus. While I would like to have both the temperature and the humidity feature I may not need it at all. When I deem it to hot or humid I trained the children how to operate the AC. I dispatch one of them to, as Jean Luc Picard would say, "Make it so."

Well did not have a good week this week. On Monday a lost a phase leg and the ground on my electric panel. Melted by the pole for some reason. It shut down some of my tanks (the new guys) and had my other tanks running on a phase leg no no street ground and only the panel ground. So instead of 110 I had a fluctuating 76-96 volts. So only some of the filters worked. Of course I was at work when this happened. Took about 3hrs for me to get home and plug the heater and air pump in on the new guys. So that tank is all skittish all week. Still have one not eating and now maybe 2 others joining him :(. So after I get the electric fixed I do water changes on all tanks. Tues I skip water changes and on wed I blow out my knee. Not a great week. Couldn’t miss 2 days so did change the water for the new guys but that was it. Also lights are messed up on their tank and find them at full bright at 4 am. So yes they’re still skittish. All other tanks are fine but the new guys.
Decided to move the one non eater to a 15g tank but as would be none of my aqueon heater are working correctly. Can’t get them to 84* and my brand new aqueon pro lights up but that’s it. I do hate heaters!!! Well it can only get better :). Well I hope!

Still skittish in the new tank. Didn’t have this problem with my first group in the planted tank. No signs of anything wrong just not eating. 3 now. Tanks a 45g with 8 3-4” discus. 75% daily water changes. Raised the temp to 86. All 3 swim to food than stop and swim away. Qt tank is ready and I will remove the first non eater today. Will also move the driftwood around and see if that works. The 5 eaters are still doing great. Had a non eater the first time around but it only lasted around 2 weeks. But it never grew to the size of the others. Water is all good. Water quality is perfect on all tests.

Water change, temperature increase, plus a variety of food and consider soaking in liquid garlic. I have created a blend of 5 foods. Some of it floats and some of it sinks. TetraColor, Bug Bites, freeze dry beef hart (or as daughter Ellie Mae calls it "bee farts", plus Al's freeze dry black worms, one other. Plus, as you do anyway some frozen blood worms and brine shrimp. I've that some fish like to peck around on the bottom or floating food even hours later. From my fishing days I noticed that at times the fish will "bite" all at the same time and then you sit for hours waiting for them to "bite" again. The fish don't communicate this to one another but for some reason they all decide to eat at the same time. Could be change of lighting, slight water temperature change, moon/tidal change, variation in water flow...who knows. Not recommending this as I am not a pro fish keeper like most of you are.
Last time this happened here I raised the temp to 91 degrees as per the advise online from Mac's Discus and Willie.

VOILA Problem solved.

I purchased one of these heaters. I love this thing. Just a couple clicks and the heat is right were you want it.
Worth the extra $$$ IMO

Peewee I have been mixing up the food even using one with garlic in it. But still nothing. Some of the others are now eating the flakes so that’s a win. But no change on him. Will move him later today. I have a 15g running with the water from the 45 so he should be fine in there. Going out today tofind some Cory’s to add to the tank and to qt for the bigger tank.
Vinnie will be raising the temp in there as it goes. Yes that Hagar looks like a great heater. I have been using the finnex type that is similar in my 2 big tanks and just ordered one for the 15. Seems to me that 800w is a lot for a 120 tank.

I have 112 gallons and the 500 is working wonderfully.
It also has a sensor on it so when I do a WC it automatically shuts off and then back on.
Also a protection feature that won't let the heater cook your fish.
I really like this thing.
Gonna get another one for the discus tank out in the shop soon.

So cleaned up and fill up the new tank.128505128506 was going to shim the left side a 1/4 but it doesn’t look bad as is. While measuring the shim I realized the tank is only 15”deep so it’s. A 75 not a 90.
Stand is also acrylic with a solid acrylic base. Was going to shim but not sure how it would work with that base so I didn’t do it.

Easy to shim. I raised an entire floor of a house with a shim. A small wooden wedge. The floor was about 1/8th inch gap between the baseboard and the floor. I went under the house, into the crawl space. found the post that was supporting the beam that that part of the floor rested on, put the wedge post, then whacked it with a claw hammer. Viola! No more gap. Took me about ein minuten. Which is German for uno momento...in case you did not know.

Yeah Vinnie the tank is a 1/4” low to the left. I did level it with some shims under the stand. But the stand has a solid piece of acrylic on the floor. So I’m was just shimming the edges not the whole peice so I didn’t do it. Here’s some pis128524 this was the shim on the outside next is the inside it’s clear acrylic.128525128526

I cannot tell by the photo. The stand sits on a concrete floor. It is a one piece stand, one without legs. But ti would seem that if you used a wege placed on the low side and then tapped the wedge until you got that 1/4 inch rise would that now work for you.

They say their are growth inhibiting hormones secreted by most growing fish which could cause a less dominant fish to fast or worse ?
I read that the PP treatment may actually remove said hormones ?

I really like Tom's bare tank. Except for the buh-tuggly sponge filter the wood and the potted plants look great. I do have the branch in my bare tank but I shouild get a few potted plants. They are easy to move for cleaning and water changes. Nice tank, and fish, Tom.

Fish look good man .

We used PP in the koi pond years ago.
Just poured it in until I got the color I wanted.
A little nervous about doing that with the Discus though.
What would be the dosage treatment for a 112 gal aquarium with discus?

My fish store boss held that stuff in very high regard.
He is also the one that used to say fish give off the hormone and that is why you should change your water often.
It would be nice to get in touch with him again and pick his brain after all these years.

I mix 7 grams of PP powder into 100ml water .
That makes a solution that yields 1 drop equals 1ppm per per gallon .
Recommend dose is 2 ppm so 2 drops per gallon is the proper addition of the solution .
Always have H202[ hydrogen peroxide ] ready when using so you can deactivate quickly if necessary .
H202 is used at 1 ml per g to deactivate and clears the water nicely .

There is always a chance of an ammonia spike .
One of my favorite articles has the bio being pulled for the treatment but I don't .

Update on discus and tanks. So I set up the 75 and added some fish. 10 phantom tetras 5 died in 3 days. Not sure of the others. 4 sterbai Cory’s and 3ottos. They’re doing good no loses.128618128619128620. The 7 in the 45 still seem to be growing with no problems. To that tank I added a pair of Julii Cory’s and a pair of SAE. Still changing 30g a night in this tank and feeding regularly.128621128622 last is the 15 with the small wonder. He’s doing well by himself and eating everything I add. There is now an SAE a Julii a 4 cardnail tetras. I started with 8 and in 24hrs was down to 4. But what’s left look good and have colored up.
Not to happy with the tetras. Lost 9 in 3-4days. All the other new fish are doing fine just the tetras. And all the fish were bought from different stores. Not many fish in any one store. 128623

Well still keepin busy :). Almost ready to set up the 125. I cleaned and polished the tank. Took out a lot of scratches and it looks a lot better. Next I reinforced the stand and painted it. I believe the reason for the crazing is the original owner had the tank just being supported from the sides. No center support. 129501129502. So next I had to move the 75 to where the 125 is now sitting129503 son helped me lift the tank and we got t move and the 125 in place129504 so now just waiting for some input pieces and hopefully get it set up next weekend :).

So I filled it up and added some wood and gravel. Waiting for a pump but have a magnum filtering it with some floss and charcoal. Got sot plastic containers from odd lot and fill them with gravel. Plan to put some plants in them and see how that works out. Put 25lbs of gravel in and it filled the bottom. Thought I would need about 60lbs.129561 thats last night and this is today.129562.

Just curious,
Does anyone ever use under gravel filters anymore?
I have always thought they are very effective if taken care of.
I guess they are obsolete now?

Vinni

Iminit
11-21-2020, 06:18 PM
Yeah I’ll go with obsolete. They were on there way out when I was a kid. They were pretty much the culprit of old tank syndrome. All the muck that built up under them was a problem. To many better options now.

Well I got the wet/dry running today. Went with a dc pump (thanks coral) and this is new to me. Seems Toruń good. Lots of gurgling noises. Not from the pump just the water flowing. The overflow is very noisy. I added some matrix and bio-home I had from other tanks. Not sure what else to do. Time will tell :)129658

So today I added the first 2discus. There both Hans. But one was the hero fish that I added to Kenny’s group. Both of these are the white leopards from Hans and neither really grew. Got them in July at 2 1/2” and measured today they are just 3 1/2”. Plan to let them sit for 2 days and than add 4 more. 2 from each tank.129699

Vinni Smith
11-30-2020, 10:07 PM
Looks like you have some rummies in there too. I love rummies.

Those little guys should grow out nicely in that big tank!

That filter below with the DLS down flow should supply a lot of oxygen. Being in the koi hobby, we learned the importance of oxygen. It is every bit as important to making koi grow as is the food. We looked for every way to oxygenate our ponds. Down flow barrels with DLS like you have was a perfect way to do so.

Iminit
12-01-2020, 09:32 AM
Yes I added 6 rummies about a week and a half ago. Lost one. No idea where it went? But yes they are nice. Plan on getting more. Like wet/dry systems so hoping to or the best.

Vinni Smith
12-01-2020, 10:23 AM
The whole trick with that DLS material is NOT have it sit in water. Not even the bottom of it. Completely above the water line. If you don't the oxygen effect does not work nearly as good and you simply have an under the water filter like the rest. It also gets plugged easily that way.

It is a great product to use. But it is a nightmare to clean when that time comes.

Iminit
12-01-2020, 09:19 PM
Thanks Vinnie! Luckily that’s the way it set up. Water is below the DLS. My sons buying me the heater for Christmas. So I will wait for that but I bought a hygger led light on Black Friday for $54. You are gonna love that heater. We have 3. One is outside on a fountain! Doing a great job with 800 Watts. As far as I am concerned, there is not another heater on the market. I am sure, sooner or later one will fail, but at this point I am nothing but happy with them.

I just love your setups bro. They are great looking tanks. Wish we lived closer so I could see them in person.

Well it’s been a busy 2 weeks!! Bought a new pair of discus locally and brought a cross contamination into both my tanks. Brought the new ones in and put them in a 30g in another room but somehow my fish still got sick. Main tank first than this tank.130982. On this tank I used rid-ich plus now for 12 days. Left the plant in and no problems there. No white poo just the blackish color with the slime coat showing. These guys mostly ate throughout the ordeal. My other tank I had a few days of non-eating. Both tank are looking much better now and will hopefully both go back to normal. This was yesterday130983. Got to say this was an eye opener!! Even with the new guys in another room I still managed to get it into both my tanks. I’ve brought in new discus a few times now without a problem so I though5 nothing of doing this now. I qt everything but even that didn’t help here. It’s scary what these fish can carry. Whatever it is it is a discus only disease. None of the dither fish were affected and it’s didn’t jump into my other tank. Just discus!! Makes you wonder! I’ve got a thread running in the disease spot. Looking for help!! If you’d like to see how it’s going and what I did. I did a different approach in each tank.

Well it’s been a year since I set up this tank. Some up and downs along the way but basically all’s been good. The cross contamination being the only set back. Seems like the cheap tank deals are gone!! Can’t find an acrylic tank for sale now under $1000. Amazing what covid has done to the prices of everything. But this tank is still running good. The craze in the front hasn’t changed. Thing I’m noticing is even though I’ve removed many of the scratches it seems like a haze has formed on the inside. Like the bio-film is growing in those tiny tiny scratches that are the end result of the novus treatment. I have heard that some people use a blow torch as a final step to melt the finish. But that’s much more than I’m ready for. Most people don’t even notice the haze. Just me :). Thinking 180 but the price of a new one went up $600 in the last year. People are asking more than new for their used ones!! So I’m waiting this out. Which is good. I’ve got close to 30 discus now in 3 tanks. This is an addictive hobby :). Here’s the tank now. Craze on left.132145 and the haze from a side view.132146
As for filtering the wet dry seems to be a much better filter than the fx6. I’ve cleaned the wet dry twice in the last year and the tank is crystal clear. While the fx6 tank with the same amount of fish gets cloudy in around 4 days. To this tank I’ve added another wet dry. But this one is only good for a 100g and is only moving around 400gph. Just seems like the fx6 isn’t moving as much water as it originally did. Yes I’ve cleaned it many times. Every 2 months. Including the impeller. Just seems like every other canister a let down. Also when I clean it it’s never as dirty as when it was new. I think it’s just has way to much media in it to really work right. I keep reading of people using 2 of them on there 75-125 g tanks. That to me is just telling us they ain’t working right.
But all in all everything is going good. Even the plants are all growing again.132147
