View Full Version : Loud Sounds and Discus

I am considering the establishment of a 120 gallon discus tank and the most ideal spot for it is near my home theatre. While it generally is not loud, there are times when the music does get quite loud resulting in a modest amount of floor vibration. I know discus don't hear, but they do sense vibration. So, I am asking the forum members if placing the tank where it would sometimes be affected by vibration (not enough to shake or move the water) is a bad idea?

Anyone here have their tank near a source of sometimes loud sounds like this?

Lastly, are there some sort of cushion that could be put under the tank stand legs that could help reduce the vibration?

Thanks folks,

Doug

You could place a pad between the tank and the stand.

I use 1/2 styrofoam as a mat from Home Depot for my 120 gallons tank.

All my tanks are in my man cave :) with my sound bar and tv. Have yet to have a problem. Well with the discus. Wife’s a whole other problem :).

You do have a nice arrangement. Plus you got the Baby Big Ben but I suspect that your fish live a peaceful life that is until a Jets game comes onto the TV. They must dart around for hours wishing they could escape lawn guyland completely. By the way how is that black discus with the red spots? Any hint of breeding interest on its part?

I used to play my bag pipes in my fish room down in the basement.
Great acoustics and all but I had to stop.
It freaked out my normally calm discus to raving maniacs.
So IMHO sound does effect them.
Upon further thought maybe it was my crappy playing.

My tanks are all on stands on a hardwood floor, if something falls on the hardwood flood they jump. All of my tanks sit on tank mats, I don’t think that they sound deaden, just help with leveling. The Discus are also visually aware, if I walk up to one of the tanks they all greet me wanting treats or food. However, I have a young man who works for me who does a lot of the tank maintenance and he plunges his hands into the tank without regard for the fish, if he approaches the tank they withdraw into the vegetation.
