I am a social worker/therapist.  So, what I do exactly, is to sit and talk to people about their problems for one hour stretches.  It is a great job, I think sometimes I get more out of the sessions than my clients!

April-what do you do?  You started this, LOL!

Bank robber :o, demolition by a biologist, 2 exotic dancers (Ryan, I missed that in your interview for Simply last month), Randy, first I thought you were in law enforcement, but then??..... ;D

Anyway, I wanted to do all that.......... but ended up in welding and metal fabricating, usually the medium heavy type stuff. A lot of times up to a few tons each piece, like parts for bridges and buildings, metal repair for constrction equipment,  but some of the work is very small pieces too.

Primarily I'm an independent audio engineer. I mix for corporate events and meetings. I'm surprised I can keep Discus alive due to the travel, but I finally worked out a system. I have several pair of spawning Discus but not enough time to put in to raising them.

I also dabble in computers and the internet, but haven't made much money in that. I'm still trying to win the lottery too, but no luck there either. Exotic dancer sounds good, but I don't think I would make much money doing that either. I suppose I just like trying hats on.

I find it so interesting what other hobbiest do when they aren't playing with their fish.   I am a university graduate who had the aspirations to become a CPA and Business Attorney.  My plans were to work for a Big 8 firm in Europe and hopefully live in Copenhagen.   Aspirations almost fullfulled but was challenged to become a firefighter by the Fire Chief in the city that I attend college.   I took the position while finishing up my degree and thought it would only be a year.  Well!  I found that this square peg fits in a round hole and have made a career of the fire service.   24 years later  I am a Battalion Chief  and enjoying every minute of my days at work.  Its been very full fillingland my education did not go to waste.  Obviously I have used management and business skills and worked for our local union serving as its president for 5 years.  Interesting enough we all have had aspirations and dreams and most of us have certainly found our niche.  Amazing that this interest in the King of Fishes taps from all walks of life

If it is one thing that this thread has taught me, it's that you never know who is a discus fanatic... I will for now on walk around looking at everyone pondering... I took the summer off to welcome my first discus from Cary.  Needless to say, I intend on keeping my spankin' new 'discus keeper' hat on for a very long time!

Tad

April,
I trust all of us take our lifes decision for employment seriously and do it right.  I reflect back upon my hat wearing career (Cairns Leather) and remember having to deal with a lot of things that some could only imagine.  Seeing children pass away before they ever learned to crawl, airplane crashes,  bombings....obviously the ills of society...but I too remember vividly the lives saved from fire ravaging,  effective CPR and a life saved,  puppys saved from storm drains etc and its been a great career.  With all the good there is bad, but the choice and challenge was mine to take and I look back proudly.  So to answer your question,  I believe we all take our jobs seriously and "do it right".  Thank God for all of those who make our society successful.

BlueTurq,
Yeah we firefighters love to rock.  Even at my ripe old age of 52 I dont miss to many oppurtunities on the dance floor lol.    And I am a 60 gallon type of guy.

I'm a warehouse manager, and am on hiatus from my tentative degree in forestry. I volunteer at the Red Wolf sanctuary on weekends, doing odd jobs, and sometimes feeding the animals. I support my habit through playing gigs with a couple different bands.

Now that I know what hat Randy wears, I won't go into detail about my crack habit! ;D

Hi all..

I'm a Respiratory Therapist in a large tertiary care hospital. My job centres around The ICU's running ventilators ("respirators" in U.S.). Another main role is Airway management  in the E.R. and we are part of the cardiac arrest team. This career has taken me as far away as Saudi Arabia, where my wife and I worked for three years. (She too is a respiratory therapist). The job keeps me challenged, and I NEVER have to take work home!

I also dabble in research for Respironics..a ventilator manufacturer. This sideline job helps pay the "habit"

Wow! Can't really hold a candle to most of you folks, but here goes. I am a CAD/CAM programmer / machinist.
I work in a job shop that makes just about anything. We used to be heavy in the semi-conductor business until the bottom fell out. It is an interesting job though. One day I might be working on a several hundred pound piece of tool steel and the next I have to use a 10x magnifyer to check .007 diameter holes. Really comes in handy when I need a thingamajig for the fishroom.

Here it goes:
I changed from being a university faculty doing teaching/research in biology/ecology/aquaculture, to a research/comercial/consultant shellfish aquaculture guy, to a school teacher who loves teaching during the day, and "doing fish" at home. Actually I also do lots of fish at school. I currently teach Spanish and various biological classes depending on the semester/year.
At home, I am Papi (daddy) to my 3 1/2 year old and lovely wife, and around the neighborhood I am the crazy colombian with the fishroom, and the guy the moms bring the kids for "the fish tour".
I commute between greater Boston and Providence, and my car (Volvo) is about to turn 200,000 miles and running strong...knock on wood...err a fish tank.
Cheers, Francisco.

HI All
This is a great topic. We'll I'm the guy who raises the Blackworms and a few other things. It all started out when I was 13. My first job was doing water changes for Mack Galbreath, remember him? Macks Powder Blue Discus. At that time the only people raising any large numbers were him and Jack Wattley. Long time ago, I'm 47 now. From then on its always been the tropical fish business. Opened up a small Tropical Fish store when I was 19 and was the retail business up untill three years
ago. Started selling Blackworms 15-18 years ago and started farming them and feeder goldfish apx 10-12 years ago. Time goes to fast !

Now I commute between the CBW farm and Maui where I actually work two other jobs, if you want to call them that. When on Maui I take visitors Scuba Diving, mostly
night dives. that way I can take care of our customers and their orders. The other is that I have to go to Bali once a month to do Snail and Cone shell inspections and shipping. I have a friend who supplies them to research labs and I'm his quality control.
What a life worms and snails.

I would like to take this time to thank all those who
use our worms. If there are any suggestions or questions please feel free to e mail as it difficult
to contact me on the phone. Thanks again.

I should have read this thread long ago! This thread just goes to show you...it takes all kinds!

My Dad was a building contractor..I started framing houses when I was 12! Got married when I was 19 and as soon as my wife finished her B.A. I drug her all over the southeastern U.S. as I learned the industrial electrical trade. I ended up learning controls and instrumentation which led me to a maintenance job with the worlds leading manufacturer of thermoplastic elastomers. My geekish skills gave me the opportunity to create a preventive maintenance program for our site and about 5 years ago I put my meter and tweaker away to sit at a PC all day in the quality assurance department as our company was attempting registration to ISO 9000. I wear 3 hats at work: I'm now the head internal (QS9000) auditor, document control and training coordinator our facility in Pensacola. I am currently in the process of eliminating my document control job with software! So I might be getting my tweaker back out and take over the calibration and maintenance of our internal lab's equipment.

Forgive me for going on so long but I must add that my super wife Donna has sacrificed much for me and our 4 children, and without her wife and mother hat none of my hats would have mattered.

Thanks to all the rest of you for sharing with us!

Hi everyone. I am a freelance medical writer. I work out of my house. My discus live in a tank across the room from my desk, and my cat sits on the corner of my desk (sometimes he sits in front of the screen :D :bounce). It is great. I get to watch and play with all of them everyday.

There is always enough time for water changes. Just turn on the valve in the basement to drain the tank (and water the tomatoes). When the level is down 2 holes on the Fluval return tube, placed vertically on the tank, it is time to shut off that valve and go up to the 2nd floor to connect the aged water to the PVC pipe that carries it down to the tank.

Great to hear what everybody does.

Hi everyone, I'm a mechanical engineer, and I currently work at a remote bauxite mine/alumina refirery on the Arnhen Peninsula in Northern Australia. I've worked in Tasmaina at an Aluminium Smelter, in Jakarta, Indonesia at a plant and construction contractor firm, at a copper and gold mine in the remote reaches of Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia (Close to Bali, but not close enough!), and on the Gold Coast as a maintenance engineer/consultant.

Am I sick of moving? Yes!! Will I move again? Of course, such is the life of a contract engineer. But Ari and I are planning to buy a "home base" in Brisbane, and raise discus! ;D ;D

Ok Dan I really think you could use an assistant....I could learn to count snails in Bali and I am a scuba newbie and I think that Maui would be the perfect place to take my final check dive....And since I also use your blackworms it could be a match for the both of us.....Paycheck???? don't need no stinking paycheck,we could work something out.....Himmmm now to talk the bride into the feeding and water changes while I go off to Bali and Maui without her...YEA RIGHT,like that would happen....Well it is nice to dream....

Hi to all,

I'm a retired electronics tech (a/v) who switched from the field to full time at the box. I'm the internet/intranet specialist for our company, LVW Electronics. My hubby Bob also works with me (20 years at LVW) and he is our all around Senior Tech and Crestron Contol Systems Programmer. Take a look at the web site for a better idea. http://www.lvw.com.

I'm also mother to 4 great kids ranging in ages from 27 to 10 years, have 3 grandchildren older than my youngest daughter and am keeper of two cats and 15 discus (so far). I keep busy, that's for sure. This week I'm on a long needed vacation, but not going anywhere because of the fish. I wouldn't trust them with anyone so until I can teach my oldest son the ropes of w/c etc., I'm grounded.

You know the registers that you see at the checkouts of stores like Walmart, A&P, GAP, (and for those of us in Canada) Hudson's Bay Company, Canadian Tire, Zellers, Holt Renfrew....etc, etc, etc. I repair monitors, scanners, keyboards, printers, registers, and of course (the fun part, because sometimes you find money in them) the cash drawers themselves. I'm getting into this kinda late but here goes. I'm 45, live in a subburb of Chattanooga, TN. I'm a semi-retired emergency medicine physician, now working part time 2-3 days per week doing consultive examinations for SS disability. Those federal guys have great hours....lol. My wife is a neonatal intensive care nurse who also works part time. We've limited our careers to raise our kids.. 2 girls, 4 and 6. You'll never hear a dying man say "I wish I'd worked more". Its always "I wish I'd spent more time with my family". So, that's what we do. Big cut in pay for us, but our kids know who we are and one of us is with them each day. I've been into tropical fish since I was a kid. My dad had a 55 gal tank in his dental office that I couldn't touch, so of course, I had to have one for myself. 10 gallon on the dresser as a kid. No hood, just one of those goose neck lamps above for lighting..Raising plants was a challenge. I remember finding dried up swordtails in my sock drawer. Back then "aged" water was the rule. Going for months without changing water was kind of what you strived for. I think the filter companies were behind this idea. You didn't change water if you had problems, you bought better filters, additives, etc. Hey, did you ever catch a black tetra in the net and hold him out of the water for a few minutes to teach him not to nip your angels fins? Didn't work. Don't try it. Anyway. I've been into discus since about 1989, got my first discus from Wattley. I remember opening the box and seeing those thumbnail sized fish that didn't look anything like the picture in the magazine. Jack didn't mind shipping tiny fish back then, but they were healthy and he always gave extras..usually about 2 or 3 if you bought 10 fish. He would always talk to me on the phone if I had problems.
Anyone ever talk to Marc Weiss on the phone in those days...he could be a little short with you, but he had nice fish and a good water buffer that I used before I learned about RO. Anyway, I'm just getting going again with discus after about a 5 year lay off. I've had an angel hatchery for about 4 years now and sell to a local fish shop and give away to friends. I have the most prolific blue and gold rams too and raise a batch of them from time to time. My girls love the fish. My oldest is now allowed to feed the fish by herself and she does a good job. I try to let them take over certain jobs as they learn how. Instilling confidence in girls is important I believe. Maybe this hobby will help. Anyway, its fun. There's always something to learn and as we know, new colors of discus to lust after. You guys are great. Wow..did I babble!

didn't know you were inyto plants as well! I took every botany course I could while getting my biology degree. I also spent 3 years working as a research assistant for the CT agricultural experiment station.... I worked on a forest health monitoring project. Best job I ever had, worst pay though!

take care,
al

ps... I also raise carnivorous plants and am an avid gardener.

Hi Al, You are right, The plant science don't pay unless you have a PHD (which I don't) But I like working in the greenhouse. I worked in the Botany greenhosues for four years before I got the Supervisor job I have now with Plant Pathology. Botany was a lot more interesting, now all we grow are agrinomic crops. You can only grow so much cotten and soybeans before you get bored! I collect desert plants, I started with cacti and have moved on to really STRANGE caudiform zenophytic plants. I spoke at the PCCA this summer and was amazed at the native plants along the coast around San Jose, (my first trip to the west coast.) You went from desert plants to redwoods in only a short distance. Way cool! Ken 8)

OK, I'll join the fun. As my handle says, I'm a chiropractor & huge UT fan. I work in a multidisciplinary clinic in Austin that combines medicine, chiro, acupuncture, therapy, etc. I also own an aesthetic laser company - www.familyskinsolutions.com.

I've recently gotten back into the aquarium hobby after a 10 year hiatus (school & all). These damn discus are my passion now!

This thread got started a long time ago, but I'm just catching up! I'm a wildlife biologist with the Forest Service. I pay for my discus addiction by breeding angelfish and fighting a fire or two on occasion.

Hi all

My name is Doug Johnson. I've been a lurker on this site for awhile and finally decided to join after RandalB made the generous offer of selling monitors to members at a great price. I finance aircraft for a living and have been involved with fish keeping off and on for 20 years. Just now making a foray into Discus however. I'm planning on converting a 180 for discus use but need to get the 30" Arowana out of it first. That's gonna be fun.

April

Hi Doug and welcome. glad you quit lurking. and im sure you will be extremely happy once you have Discus. ;D

OK, April, I'm out...jeez, it's bright here in the sun! Cary's been hassling me for months about getting my butt out and into the light of day! The deed's done! This is an excellant board, I'm learning a lot and enjoying the banter. I'm approaching one year of dream fullfillment in discusland--have a 180g planted discus tank with (so far) 9 6-9 month old juvies; some ups and downs initially but going very well, having great fun. Thanks for the welcome wagon!
Best regards,
Harriettt!

I've read all 12 pages of this thread and enjoyed it very much.

I've been a Controls Engineer and Database Administrator for a Coated Abrasives Manufacturer (think Sandpaper!) for the last 12 years. It's getting to be a 'grind'. I'm afraid I'm developing an 'abrasive personality'. Ok, I won't be such a downer. Truth is I have a good job, just sometimes find that I'm longing for change. Early midlife crisis?

The job market is very tight. I'm having difficulty finding another with comparable pay. Pursued an opportunity North of Auckland, New Zealand and in Eureka Springs, Arkansas but niether one panned out. They were more lifestyle changes than simple job changes though. :D I'm thinking cheap hot dogs in a white trash neighborhood. What do you think?

(Ivan, I made a good Larry Mullen Jr. double until my hairline began to resemble the Florida Pan Handle.)

What do I do to pay for my fish habit? Well, to understand how I got here, I gotta tell you where I came from.
I graduated with a Cosmotology (hairdressing) license from highschool, married a trucker, got divorced after 8 months, moved to Fla. Doesn't take me long to fix my mistakes...lol.
Worked as a forklift operator for Tropicana Orange Juice, where I met the love of my life (besides my fish and cats). We drove truck for about 10 years, opened a used bookstore, and I worked part time as a prison guard in a mens prison. Got tired of that, went back to trucking for another 10 years. Retired (no Mench you aren't the only retiree here) and started a wholesale precious metals company, dealing strictly with truckstops. Hubby and I drive all over the country supplying our customers with new coins and collectibles. Now we have several tanks and our office manager is getting real educated on the feeding and care of discus while we are out making the money to feed them and pay her...lol.
So I guess you could say I wear the CEO, Treasurer, Sales Rep., Purchasing Agent, Recieving Clerk, Bookkeeper, and what I don't wear, my husband does, just like any other small business owners.
Mom to discus and cats, and Lover/best friend to my hubby hats...whew, good thing I love them all. :sun:
I'm thinking we need a silver medallion with a discus on it!

I don't wear hats...

Actually i do i have this black hat that says St Louis 42, it was cheap at Old Navy and i needed something LOL

Oh and too my occupation, i'm 14, so i don't really have a job, my life is all play and no work, except on school days. So i'm a student!! What a fun job right, haha, don't get PAID for it, but hey i guess it helps.

I hope that didn't make me sound dumb, so nobody assume that, i'm actually the smart kid, lol a lot of people think i'm dumb, i don't know why!!

April

Heh Abercrombie. any kid who gets discus or is gonna has to be a smart kid right?
well you have a very important job to do right now. do well in school so you can pick and choose which one of these jobs that some of us have posted on here youd like to do.
think its interesting to see some of the jobs .

Beside Simply and DAAH you'll find me at Canopus, ReelDVD, Video University, DV, DVinfo, 2-pop, DVXuser, Golf Eq. Aficionados and Texas Holdem Poker forums.

Maybe someday I could video all the Discus in the ACA convention and put them on a DVD.

When I ain't wearing my hardhat, I'm wearing either my Saints cap, or my Bang golf cap.
OH! And if it ain't one of the above, it's a camo hunting hat. I am a hunter, usually mad, cause I work too much to get to it often enough. Hence the A mad hunter moniker. :) ;)

Hi All,

I guess I am semi retired. I have done lots of things and have owned several businesses. I enjoy starting up a venture with little or no capital and seeing how far I can take it. I always do things the hard way and love to do things that just can't be done. I am good humored but have no problem getting in anyones face in a heart beat. I treat people in the forums as though they were sitting in my living room and never say anything that I would not say face to face.

Hey All....awesome thread....don't know what took me so long to find it....read all 13 pages today!!!

I am a Community Support Worker....which means, I work with people with developmental and physical "special needs". Its a great job and keeps life in perspective, gotta be grateful for the little successes in life! Its not a great paying job...but....very rewarding.

My other passion is my critters....5 yorkies, catahoula X, 15 yr. old Wolf/malamut, 5 cats, 2 canaries, 1 tank south americans, 1 tank africans, 2 tanks discus(need more tanks!!)(more discus!!)

Its a wonderful thing coming home after "giving" all day at work.....theres nothing like the happy yapping of the terriers, old Shamus saying he loves me.."ra ra roo!" and the discus all coming to the front of the tank with little discus smiles on their faces , saying "we're starving, feed us" !..............Take Care All

Hi - Just finished up college here in S. California majoring in neuroscience, and will head to medical school next fall (probably in virginia or maryland - east coast!)

When i'm not flying around for my med school interviews, I currently work part time as a research assistant at my home college in a lab that studies stress and memory to pay for this expensive hobby. :-) Just a bit of advice on memory performance - If you are chronically stressed (stressful job), your short term/ working memory performance decreases dramatically when you concurrently experience an acute stressor (e.g. discus not eating / turning dark). So, for those of you that are normally stressed out there, relax and think happy thoughts!

Cheers,

Dennis
