To what ripe old age should a healthy happy discus in a good clean environment live?

Hi Larry,

Average life expectancy is around 7 to 8 years. Best i have done is 9years, a ghost discus. I have heard of 12 years, but that was 2nd hand information.

Wow, that is much longer than I expected. I'm sure you get very attached over that many years.

You couldn't be more right about the attachment thing Larry, i used to proudly show him off to everyone who came over. Heres a pic of him for Nostalgia purposes.

Wow Rod,

He was one beautiful fish indeed.

Sorry for the loss but at least you have many a great years with him.

I know of 13 years the fish is still alive. It is i beleive either a blue turk or a brilliant blue. ;D

my friend has a discus 9 years, going strong......... but second hand info says 13 - 14 years.

mine discus have been with me for 6 years now........

I think I recall Gabe telling me they can live up to 13 or 14 years and that temps above 85 may make them grow faster but may shorten the life span.

...Looks like we may want to turn the temp down a lil' after they get their basic growing done
