I've been keeping a photo record of my discus and I thought I'd pass along how I'm keeping track of photos. I set up a "discus" directory on my hard drive under the discus directory I set up a folder for each type of fish I have so I have a gold diamond, a snakeskin and a leopard directory then I when I save a photo I'll name it something like ssnov2002_1.jpg what it means to me is its a photo of a snake skin taken in November 2002 and it was the first photo. I've found it very helpful in tracking growth and development. Has anyone else been doing something like this? here's a few of the photos I took last night.

Rick,

Storing them by fish type is a good idea. Whenever I try to find a specific pic I've got to show all pics by thumbnail and that takes forever for them all to appear, and then scanning thumbnails for one picture is a real pain.

The naming sounds like a real pain in the butt. You can sort the pics in order of date so it's not really necessary to rename them. Mind you they should show up chronologically by name as well if your camera names the sequentially like most do. But then again maybe you're going to name these fish on that basis for selling them. In that case I'll take the ssnov2002_2. I find the name a bit of a mouthfull but it's a really nice fish. 8)

Hi Rick,
I track all my fish that I plan on keeping . All the breeders have permanent numbers I assign to them.... followed by their sex and strain info, or parentage...

For example al1(male)wg =fish Al1is a male wild green, Al2(female)blss =fish AL2 is a female blue snakeskin.

The fry are tracked by thecombination of parents.... so for this bunch... the tank would read Al1A2 and the hatchdate
The male of the pair is always listed first. If I am interested in multiples from this cross I would just name them..al1al2_001
al1al2_002...etc
Technically this should allow me to always keep track of the fish even if I back cross.

I track the date of the pics by burning the pics into CDs with the capture date similar to how you do it.
