I bought a barrel a while ago that had been used for pickled onions , i gave it a good clean with mild soap then baking soda and numerous rinses.
I have been using it for a month now and my water from it still smells of p-onions , dose anyone know if this could harm my fish.

Mine contained greek olices - smelled like vinegar and oil and pickling spices for quite a while - never hurt the fish and smells like water now.

My barrels were used to ship PepperSteak. Took about 6 months for that odor to go away. The one's I wanted to buy had carried applesauce, but there were so many bees on them I was afraid to load them into my van.

industrial strength antibacterial soap for institutional use. it took alot of hand washing and bleaching and rinsing before i used it. now the fish are soooo clean. cg

Julz..I've always seen the barrels for sale at some of the larger flea markets. 12-15 bucks for a 55 gal barrel is the typical price around here..and that's with a heavy duty lid with gasket and metal clamp.

I get mine at the farm supply store - I bet a camping or outdoor type store would have them as they're used to store water for people purposes too.

eheh I'm so lucky. My barrels contained Dr. Pepper syrup. Nice and sweet hardly needed much cleaning at all.

OK thanks all.

I will try Fleet Farm first Carol... I am in need for another, now that the Discus Craze is accelerating full force. That will be barrel 3 for me. Just wish Oscar's 100 gallons weren't so expensive..... :( They are really nice....

Hmmm, come to think of it I do have a friend that works at Gedney Pickle... Maybe I too will have pickled smelling fishies.....

Thanks again. ;)
