View Full Version : Should females be treated any differently?
Since females put so much time and energy into cranking out eggs...
Are they more susceptible to illnesses and such?
They seem to grow slower and some of the problems I have seen with my fish and other people's fish seem to affect females more than males.
Even if fry are not produced, should they be separated at times or will they just keep on laying or will they eventually just grow out of it???

They, and all females, should just get in the kitchen and make me a sandwich.

Hi Jeep:
The females do expend more energy in producing the eggs and on average equal amounts of energy caring for the young.
Folks who breed a pair over and over remove the fry early. Others who leave the fry with the parents for several weeks may give the pair a break before letting them raise fry again. If the female is not in good condition or is unhappy she will not lay eggs.
Males do chase the females around and try to make them breed, some get pretty mean. Others are equal partners, sharing food and parenting duties.

Thanks Carol. I posted that question because including me, I knew of 3 people that had problems back to back with their fish. They were basically the same problem and they were all females.
Thanks

I have a different thing going on here. My male never really chases the female before laying eggs. They actually get along great!! It's after she lays the eggs that the male turns into a *******. He gets down right nasty! I have asked for advice and will try something out to make the male more passive on the next spawn. I'll fill you all in when they spawn again.

My male harrasses her constantly (but mildly) even while laying eggs. Like yours, after the spawn he becomes very aggressive and mean, although he has toned it down a bit recently. I found out it was the female eating the eggs, which I assume is why he was beating up on her so much...

Very often the Dad actually makes the better parent and does quite well raising the kids by himself. I would try removing the female if she is an egg eater or if she is getting pushed out of the way by Dad after the eggs are fertilized.
What woman wouldn't want a break after pumpin out 200 eggs or more?
I say give Dad a chance! He might just surprise you.
Hey, Why shouldn't women wear watches?
There's a clock on the stove!
sorry...I had to throw that in
