Well, I picked up my fry today from Jimmy, he GAVE them to me. They're in their tank and are little eating machines. All they want to do it eat!!!! It was great to meet Jimmy and see his beautiful fish! He made me feel very welcome, and he is truly a very knowledgeable discus keeper. Jimmy, thanks for the great tips and beautiful little fry. This is a pic Jimmy took before he netted them; they're saying their good-byes to dad! :( The male blue diamond is a beautiful fish! Thank you once again Jimmy.

Barb: I'm sure they'll be fine under your care. they're so lucky to have you taking care of them. If they were still in my tank. They'd have all end up in the drain. Cull heavily to keep the best 10. I'll take 9 off from you. Hahaha. Enjoy. they'll keep you busy over the holidays.
Jimmy.

Hi JimmyL:
Do you start culling at that young age? Can you see anything but size difference?
Carol :heart1:

12-15-2002, 12:11 AM
Carol: There's always a few anti-socialist refuse attacment since day one and swim around by themselves. These are the ones I cull at this stage and will end up in the drain during W/C.
Jimmy.

How old are those fish? I had no idea people sold (or gave away, whatever the case may be) fish that were so young and small. I doubt they could withstand shipping...lol

paulmat
12-15-2002, 05:56 AM
Actualy, fry ship pretty well, probably safer than adults.

12-15-2002, 11:43 AM
Hi, I don't think they withstood the journey very well. This morning many of them are huddled in the corners on the bottom, a couple have died, most are still alive but won't come out to eat. They are in the same water as they came from, I have added 1 tbsp/10 gals salt, temp 85. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Zero ammonia in the tank. Aeration - airstone.

Barb

12-15-2002, 02:16 PM
Paul,
As I have talked to many breeders, they say that fish that are about 1.5-2" ship the best. Those younger and older are highly susceptible to disease and will often come down with stuff. It definatley held true w/ my last shipment.

12-15-2002, 10:39 PM
Those fish were not for sale. It's simply a challenge offer to Barb to raise as though as her own spawn. Barb picked them up personally and brought home in a cooler filled with the water they were in with the parents. She didn't have to pay for a cent. Just to clarify to people PM me for selling such a small fish. thanks.
Jimmy.

I think its a great way to learn. i did that when i was starting out....got some fingernail size ones to learn on.
I managed to raise them up....lost one....
but i paid for mine.....lol.
they may be feeling lost barb...might be better in a tiny tank and small amounts of new water added a few times a day. siphon out some...and add back new water slowly iwht a bucket above the tank and an airline tubing to drip it in.
of course Jimmy can help im sure.

12-16-2002, 12:31 PM
There is nothing wrong with what Jimmy and Barb did. I think its a great way to learn regardless if she paid for them or not. Ignore the PM's Santa Jimmy :santa: and keep it up

I would try a little salt and blue. Offer them some live food Barb. At that size a few days with out eating will surely stunt there growth. They still look small enough to take bbs and large enough to eat black worms.

Good luck and hope they come around.

Mike

12-16-2002, 02:01 PM
Barb: Don't lose any sleep about them. i have many pairs in breeding mood. There's always another one. I'll put the female back the tank today. They'll have another brood on their back when I come back from holiday.
Jimmy.

Thank you, we're really enjoying them! When I siphon their tank, they think the siphon is their parent I think. They follow it back and forth, back and forth, needless to say, it takes me a long time to do their tank. :)

Looks like you are doing a great job.
When fry are with parents siphoning isn't bad as they stay with mom and dad, I don't like the chore near as well after I separate them, I have sent more than one of the little devils down the drain.

Can you see a difference in the color of your fry? Are some PB and others BD? OR do they all look similiar in color?
Carol :heart1:

Barb Newell
12-25-2002, 03:38 AM
Hi Carol. We are beginning to see a light blue on the fins of some of the solid ones, it's like a soft blue light shining on them. Others we can see the bars, a couple look like rose reds (but can't be), they have the dark bar over the eyes.

Barb

12-25-2002, 08:49 AM
Barb: I can't understand what I wrote. It must be after midnight. to clearify the parents of the fry.
The father is a F2 Angel Diamond from Wayne Ng of Hong Kong. Within the same brood. There were 10-20% throw backs 5 bars cobalts. Just call him BD cause it was bred by me.
Picture attached find a Cobalt at the bottom of the picture. that's their uncle. the father is the one on the left.

12-25-2002, 08:51 AM
The mother is Actually the daughter of the F2 Angel Diamond from aboveX MR with unknown origin. A little bit black dust on her back. It's a red Panda. This was her first training brood. Just to test what the offspring will look like before actually breeding her.

You are doing one great job  Keep up the great work. If they are anything like their parents then you are in for some great looking fishes.

Cheers,

Barb Newell
12-29-2002, 01:35 PM
Thanks Chi. They grow every single day, every morning when I go to check on them, they've grown. I gave them a drop of Ocean Nutrition gel cubes yesterday, they gathered round, checked it out then devoured it. I think I'll use it as a supplement because I can't fill them on bbs anymore. I can't hatch enough :).

Did you get any fish while you were in TO?

Barb

Carol_Roberts
12-29-2002, 04:46 PM
Looking good

I've been rying to interest mine in flakes or tetra bits in addition to the cbw. They turn their little noses up and swim away.

What a fun mix of BD x PBbd. All will be uniquely marked.
What % are barless?
Carol :heart1:

Barb Newell
12-29-2002, 05:03 PM
Hi Carol, not sure of %, I'll take a look and let you know. Some look blue, some look orange/red some have bars. They swim so fast it's hard to track anything!!!! I haven't tried mine on tetrabits or flakes yet but they sure love that frozen gel good from Ocean Nutrition. Once they realized that it was food, they attacked!

How old are yours now?

Barb

Carol_Roberts
12-29-2002, 06:37 PM
Mine are 23 days free swimming today. You are right they get bigger everyday.

My power was off yesterday for 10 hours and their tank got down to 74 degrees. I didn't feed them all day until the tank got back up to 80 degrees - today they seem OK and are eating cbw as normal, but I'm keeping a close eye on them.

Here is a group shot taken today of the PBxRT babies 23 days old

Hi Carol, THEY'RE SO CUTE! 10 hours no power, you must have been in a state of panic. Did you lose all of your bacteria in your sponges?

Barb

Carol_Roberts
12-29-2002, 06:53 PM
I have all aqua clear and sponge filters, they did just fine. It's not like a canister filter where the oxygen is used up.

My biggest worry was the 10 degree temperature drop and no food for 16 hours. I know with my koi you quit feeding when temp drops in winter as digestion is sluggish. I thought it best to just keep the tank dark and hope they slept. Luckily I had just moved the big yellow dad out the day before. I will be keeping an eye on them . . . Carol :heart1:

They're nice. I can see some BD and White Diamond, Cobalt and there maybe some Tangerine. You never know. A freind of mind has the female from the same brood of their mom, he corssed with a Golden and all the babies are nicely Yellow Canary. This female really throw some amazing fry. Even one pioneer discus breeder came and bought some of the fry. He's planning to show them next year.

Hi Chi, as requested, here's an updated pic of the fry. They are 7 1/2 weeks old. They're doing very well, haven't lost any, keeping my fingers crossed.

02-02-2003, 12:17 AM
Barb: You should be proud of your accomplishment. They are nice with good body shape. Once they start feeding beefheart. Their dorsal fins will grow a lot higher and give you a round body shape. You have all kind of discus in this brood. There're over 40 of them. You'll need more tanks soon. You don't need anymore discus now. Maybe I Should keep all the Tangerines for myself? Keep up the good work. Stop feeding the BD blood worms starting around 2",that will cause constipation. Just BH only.
Jimmy.

Barb Newell
02-02-2003, 09:47 AM

What a variety . . blue diamonds, cobalts, turquoise, pigeons, all from a BDxBD/PB as I recall.

How many do you have now? the two that look blue diamond in the group shot look smallest, while the turquoise types look largest?

Barb Newell
05-25-2003, 10:23 AM
Hi Carol, I've kept about 25 fish, sold 25. I've got them in two tanks and am opening a third tank for them. The blue diamonds are the smallest, I was told they are slower growing. The largest are the orange ones, then the turqs, then the solid blues.

Barb, nice job on growing the discus. I think I've seen the original pair and I can't believe the genetic variety in them...

I noticed your home-made sponge filters. Where do you buy your sponges? I use the hydro sponge replacements but yours look like they're working well for you.

Barb Newell

Hi Sam, thanks! I would never believe that so many different strains of discus could come from a pb x bd.

I order the sponges from
Galger
E-mail Address(es):
Galger@accesscomm.ca

Chris makes them, they're approx $3.50 Cdn. He's in Canada. I find the sponges work very well. He has a new style, I've got some on the way. I'll let you know what the new design is like.
