I was getting ready to treat my discus for hex as they were not eating and some had white fece's so i raised my temp to 94f and started treatment 400 to 10 gals. When i checked on them the next morning i almost died they were all huddled in a corner some on their side some quite dark. I should mention that before i raised the temp. they were scratching and darting but not very often. I immediately did a 50% water change and added salt 3 tbsp per 10 gals. And did another change 8 hours later i also lowered temp back down to 86f. Now the fiish are darting and scratching like mad not eating much and returning to a corner to hide body color is darkening fins are clamped some are head standing one holds itself on a 45 degree angle eyes are dark. Before all this happened my water parameter's were all good Temp 86f Ph 7.2 and stable nitrites nitrates ammonia all good. 50% water change was done daily. The only thing i can think is when i started to treat for flaggelates the increased temp caused a bacteria infection if some kind to accelerate. Can anyone help me with this and can anyone tell me how you can identify a gram positive or gram negative bacterial infection.

Most discus bacterial infections are gram negative.

Thank's for the reply Carol. What med do you use for gram negative bacteria treatment. How can you tell if it's positive or negative?

Well Gypsy, It sounds like you need to do something fast. IMO, salt at 1 tbsp per 2 gallons or even 1 per 1, and try Neomycin, a very good gram neg antibiotic. Leavetemp at 85 or 86 and keep up treatments for 6 straight days with 50% WCeveryday, and re- add salt and Meds. Frank

Thank's for the reply. That is what i did to get thing's started. Idid a 50% water change immediately then added salt @1tbsp per 3 gals and after that i did 50% water changes twice a day and am presently still doing this and replacing salt. I can't get neomycin were i live but can get maracyn and maracyn-2 I think Maracyn-2 is for gram negative bacterisl infection. I have maracide on hand as well and apparently can use both at same time. Don't know for sure as i have never had to use them before. What do you think?

Yes fcdiscus The med is called maracyn-two it is a product made by Mardel. Maracyn is gram positive and Maracyn-two is gram negative
