Hi everyone,

My pair have spawn for four times over the month,

1st time - failed as eggs turned white

2nd time - failed as most eggs turned white again but I saw two wriggles
on the pipe but was later eaten by the blue diamond female.

3rd time - about 100 eggs turned white but about 150 wriggles were seem
on the pipe. Two days later, I started to find wriggles fell to the base and
become dead within a few hours.

4th time - spawn last tuesday, the eggs turned white yesterday and
I have washed away all the bad eggs.

I have placed a heater at 28 degree and black water extract.

should I replace the male ?

What could be the problem?. Please advice.

No blackwater extract :-X

You had 150 wigglers so male must be good
Wigglers died before free swimming.
So must be a water quality problem
or a bacterial problem
or maybe too much current to swim against
(current could hinder eggs from fertilizing too)

Did you keep a room light on for them 24 hrs a day - that helps.

Temperature is correct. Tank is bare bottom.

What type of filter?

How old are parents?

Why not take the eggs away from the parents next time and buy a gallon of distilled water and put them in that along with some methylane blue. I use about 10 drops for a gallon. You'll get a better hatch and on day 7 is when mine become free swimming and looking for food.

Hi Carol_Roberts,

Thanks for ur reply.

I am using a sponge filter, therefore the current is not the issue,
I am thinking, it might be my water condition. I feed the fish
everyday with frozen bloodworm and remove any waste
after an hour and replenish with tap water. The water in
my country has a ph value about 7 (singapore).

I have placed a wire gauze around the pipe to protect the eggs
and some dose of methelyn blue applied to the eggs.

Where did I go wrong?. :-X

Hi Carol_Roberts,

Ok, I will try to put the eggs away, but once hatched, should I return
them to their parent or feed them myself. How can I make food for the
small ones..

What was the metal gauze made from? Some metals react with water and can kill fry. Can you find plastic mesh to protect the eggs? Leave eggs in with parents and remove mesh after eggs hatch.

I have only had parents raise the babies and can not advice you on how to raise them yourself.

Thanks for the reply,

The mesh is made of aluminum so it will not rust. I have
even wash it with hot water before using it.

I waiting for the next spawning again, and get ur advice again. Thanks again for ur prompt advice.

what are your water parameters at? ph should be below 6.5 and conductivity should be below 120 ppm preferably around 80or lower.

other than water, have you turned the filter off while they are laying eggs? this helps the sperm get to the eggs and stay there. you can turn it off shortly after they are finished.

I think you should follow Carol's advice. Just do more waterchanges and take out that metal mesh. 4 spawns to get wigglers is very good. It takes many pairs much longer than that. Let time run its course and you will be a proud father soon.

When I see my Discus getting ready to spawn I do a 90-100 percent water change with water slightly cooler than there present water. I turn off the air to the sponge filter until at least 30 minutes after spawning takes place. I add 2 drops of Formalin per gallon of water when I restart the filter. I only feed 1 time which is 1 day before the eggs are due to hatch and then a 50% water change with the water temp equal to the tank water.

I'm new at this but I think when you add the formalin, it will kill your sponge. So you may need to put a new sponge in. I have better luck if I take the egg's out and put them in a small tank with the "blue" treatement. Steve

Formalin @ 2 drops per gallon is OK
