View Full Version : Largest Discus Size

Ok,
We've all heard of the mythical "Dinner Plate" sized discus. I want to know what the largest discus YOU have in YOUR tank is. Not fish you've seen somewhere else, but your fish. Don't include the tail, just measure from the lips to the base of the tail. And NO FUDGING!!!! Don't guess either...actually measure close up. lol. Feel free to back up your statements with pictures up against a ruler as well.

Brad,
This should be good if Cary replies.

Miles ;D

I've seen Cary's fish...he's lucky to get a 4-incher....... Maybe it's because he pees on the sides of his fish tanks????

Don't have a ruler laying next to this fish but heres a photo.

he's slightly over 7" and one fat guy ( is it F A T or is it P H A T?)

12-27-2002, 07:38 PM
So Rick, that guy is over 7" w/out his tail? Man, is he like 9" long with his tail then?

Hey Ricky,
That is one big beautifull monster youve got there, do you have any of his brothers you would like to sell or would you consider selling him. I've got a large female who needs a big strong male shes 6" without tail.

there used to lines of cobalts that got pretty huge on average 6"+, but by far the biggest fish I see nowadays are always snakeskins, anyone agree?

Interesting Thread Brad!!

Hey Jason;

Of the nine juveniles that I started with, the two largest are the Red based Snakeskin and the PB. Each measures about 6-6.5 inches (head to base of tail). Interestingly, the SS was not the biggest eater and got picked on quite a bit at first but is now a bit more assertive with the others.

Regards, Lester

My biggest is only 5", but seeing as all my adults were(are) runts, what can i say. I have a young adult SS that's getting to be big. I still don't believe these people that say they have an 8" fish not including tail. I'm sure they've existed, but i think some people wanna stretch it a little. I challange anyone that has a fish 8" without the tail to pull him out of the tank, put a ruler next to that puppy and take a pic for us here. He'd have to be close to 11 or 12" including the tail....

7 to 8 inch fish are very rare, most people tend to overstate the size.

Oscar
First you were after my male snakeskin, now you want Rick's
You might as well just give it up and send her to me. Nice fish.

Dennis i seem to recall you were also after mine....or rather snake x rsg. you are keeping like company. lol. a bunch of snake absconders.

12-28-2002, 03:04 AM
Dennis...I'm glad to know that. I always thought I just had tiny fish compared to many other people. Dennis, how big has your biggest fish been, and no fish stories...wait...that doens't work well here.

Brad
I will have to give it a tranquilizer and lay it on a tape measure, it's just to big to hold with my hands. But I would have to guess a little over 6 inches with out tail.

April
If I had your Snake x RSG I wouldn't need Ocars female.

Dennis. theres one minor glitch with the female ss x rsg you want. im becoming completely convinced hes a male.
all i know is i have the two in a 100 gallon tank. only fish in there. and is it big enough for them?nopers. they sometimes bow but mostly take a run at each other all stiff and angled and then attack and both go flying off. they do try fight over the cone...but they are not crowd friendly. i had 4 in there and had to remove the other two. now im down to two...and still war. I need a known male or female to figure out who they are. ;D

Hi,

The largest discus I brought up is 6 inches. Some of them are only 4 inches but they have great color than the big ones. But I have seen discus that is bigger than a adult male's face once in a discus contest show serveral years ago. I guess it would be 30cm large(head to tail). That certainly is the biggest discus I ever seen. (To tell the truth, it's good looking too.) IMO, it could be injected some hormone to help growth and improve the color too. I once bought a small BD(2 inches), his eye was so small, his body was quite large comparing to the othe in the same batch and his color was so deep shinny blue; without hesitation I bought it right back home. He ate very much and grew twice the rate as the others. I was just happy to get such a good fish. He was 6 inches large within 10 months and then started looking for the chance to breed. One day he just died without any sign; he looked normal in the morning and found dead in the middle of night. I asked many breeders' openion; they all came to one conclusion--hormone injected fish. From the day on, I would not buy any discus with bright color when they are small.
Well, I bought one red turk two months ago that is 8 inches.(head to tail) I wonder his real age would be? Any one knows approximately please tell me. Thanks!

April.Dennis & Oscar

That is just about enough out of all of you.

You need someone totally impartial to settle all of this. Since my snakes & ssXrsg are all to young yet to even dream about breeding I believe I would be impartial enough to help you settle all of this.

Here is my solution:

I volunteer to house all three fish, at no charge I might add.

Determine their sexes.

Get them to form a pair & allow them to breed.

Then I would send you all some of the fry for you to grow out to determine if they are high enough quality - this might take 5 or so spawns for me to be sure I have good strong and viable enough fry to send to you so you are able to judge of course.

How does that sound?

Oh did I somehow forget to say anything about returning the fish when I was finished ...Hmmmm? ;)

I think people are including the tail in their measurements of the fish.

Willie
12-29-2002, 11:36 AM
OK, I'll be the a**hole here and say I don't believe these measurements without a ruler. Net the fish out, put a ruler on top, take a picture and you'll have my loyalty!

Willie

12-29-2002, 12:59 PM
Willie...

Can I be an a**hole also?! I dont buy the monster stories either....heard lotsa stories about 10"+ discus....but Ive never seen ANY type of proof.

Tony

12-29-2002, 03:06 PM
Willie,
I'm with you...That's the reason I started this thread. Anyone that claims to have a fish larger than 6" without the tail must provide a picture of the fish with a ruler. I believe guys like Dennis and Cary...but I still want pics!

Hey Cary, where is the other half of the fish? I only see half a pic

01-02-2003, 10:46 PM
Cary
Nice fish but still not much over six inches with out the tail.
To be honest the largest I have ever had was a heckel that was 6 3/4 with out tail and the largest I have ever seen were two different visits to Herman's at Fairy Lake Discus in SanFrancisco and these were both pigeon bloods that were an honest 7 inch plus with out tail.
Dennis

01-02-2003, 11:10 PM
I used some straight edge paper to measure Cary's fish and came out with just about 6" and 5.5". That stiff dead one i didn't bother with....lol When will you have some of those fry Cary? I now challenge anyone that says they have a fish bigger than Cary's to put up a pic. Who said they have fish 7 and 8" plus without the tail????

Back in the early 90's Ray Kosaka in Hawaii had some giant turqs available...I don't have any hard evidence of their giant size other than my memory that they were much larger than normal strains and had an unusually relaxed, regal demeanor, never nervous or flighty. The two I had ignored all my other discus, never paired up or spawned.
Anyone in touch with Ray that can confirm the size of this strain? I'm pretty sure they were well over 7" without tail.

This is a wild fish (Jatapu blue) at Oliver Lucanus' home. He is the largest of a gaggle, but everybody in the gaggle is pretty large. I have to show it in two pictures as I have not learned yet to stack the 2 without being more than 85KB. The fish measured just over 8 inches mouth to end of tail, and was very muscular as apparently all are at this fast-current, piranha-riddled, clear water location.
The fish...

:o Say What?

You guys not counting the Tail? Well Fine then... when you buy them from me the tail is not included anymore. their will now be a additional fee for TAILS. ;) ;) ;)

Man the last time I was at a bass tourament they counted the tail. Hell I lost cause of the tail :( :(

Am Sorry I go buy total length head to tail end of tail not like brads paper ruler. :P

But really I agree I do have some PBs with fry right now that are 6.5" IN YOUR EYES :o hee.hee.hee that I will show later.

Andy! Any pics of fathead? I know he is gone now But he was a easy 7" and THICK like a german Tank.

I think I forgot to pay for them. ;)

:D

01-03-2003, 10:31 AM
Cary is starting to sell those tailless butterfly discus everyone!!! He told me in a phone convo last night that he's breeding mini-discus: they look just like normal, big fish, except they max out at about 3" including tail. They're just as round and all. Now you can keep them in a much smaller tank! On top of that, i heard someting about the return of super guppies. Maybe that's why Cary wasn't selling fish for the last month and a half, he's getting ready for a big change.

The biggest fish that I have (not counting his tail) is 6 1/4 inches. I have talked to lots of folks on the phone and email who talk about their 7 inch fish, but when they come over to buy fish they always look at him and say WOW thats the biggest discus I have ever seen..... I think that is everyone netted their fish and measured them they would find that their 7 inch fish really measure in at about 5...

i saw one at Frank Baileys in wichita kansas, 10 years ago that was the largest i have ever seen. since, i have seen only one larger than my corulean male 6"w/o the tail. and that is john nicholsons red turq. he is a monster, i think john feeds him small animals.

John, It is so amusing to hear all these "Fish Tales". I agree with you and Dennis. Farfetchedness is a disease one can catch from their discus---The Pinochio Syndrome!!!!! They should take an old 45 record and see how it matches up!

I think anyone that has these " Monsters that ate New York City" should bring them to the ACA in Cincinnati. Sort of I'll show you mine if you show me yours. My largest is 7 1/2-8" tops ( Total length ) He will be there! ;) Joe

Your slipping here, how old are you.
I mean who has 45 records today.
Heres a clue to my age, I can remember the big square box on the floor of the fifty ford, a 33 player for autos. the good old days.

I have a few 6 to 6.5"ers. I stopped by Gywnbrook farms last fri and he had some that were bigger than my biggest fish so i would think his were 7" wo tail.

Ken

01-06-2003, 03:54 PM
Dennis, It's called geezing not slipping. Those square boxes on the floor of the 50's through early sixties could only be used to impress at the A &W Root Beer Drive In replete with girls on roller skates wearing poodle skirts! We called em Skipsalot! I do not long for the do wop days at all! I was nauseated with all that ( music?? ) then Jimi, Janis, and others saved the day in the sixties.

Even though I am rode hard and hung up wet, one thing I can still accomplish is the use of a measuring apparatus. I think a 45 record is a good size for a large discus. In Vietnam, there are some large discus--about 8 -8 1/2" total length.

Time for my nap! Joe ::)

Joe I wished I had started going to the ACA shows when this fish was young. I really think he would have had a chance of winning something, but now I think time has passed him by. He currently has fry on him but here in a couple of weeks I may pull him out and get a total length measurement on him. I would guess it would have to be least 7 1/2 inches.
