All,
I've been vacationing the last few weeks, but I thought I would share my recent purchase and what's been going on.
When I woke up Saturday morning and started my discus tank cleaning regimen, I immediately noticed that the center brace on my 45 gallon tank had split and that the sides were bowing out a good deal. Needless to say, if the tank was in a nice basement fishroom this would have been less of a big deal, but being in my guest bedroom all I could picture was 4 inches of water on the floor frying my computer, ruining carpets, etc. Plus I have been planning to buy a new tank anyway, and this is a great excuse to get it done!
;D
So, yesterday I went out and bought a 46 gallon bowfront tank and stand and also a replacement 45 gallon... I was hoping to get a 4 foot tank, but after re-measuring my available space, I reconsiderered - the length was fine but the width would then block off access to part of the room and to my breeding tanks... Which is not a good idea. So I went for a shorter, wider tank.
I drained my damaged 45 and placed all my filters, heaters, and fish in the new 46 gallon. I now have the 45 gallon free, so it's almost time... ...
I already have plans to go with a batch of Al's WGxPB cross and I must say, I am extremely excited about it!!!
Just waiting for them to grow up a bit...

John,
Thats great! I do love those 45 gallon tanks (i have 2 of them) the height on them is great. I really haven't had that great a week with tanks though either. My 20H with a pair in it started to leak, but luckily i had a 45 open to put them in. It was also good that it was in the basement......concrete floors :) . I also had a ten gallon with a pair of Kribs in it leak, but i was able to replace it before any damage was done.
Good luck with then new tanks, and from the fish i saw at Al's house, you should really be getting some sweet fish!

John,
How old was that tank? I'm glad it didn't break.
Did you every recheck with a level to see if the tank is level after filling?

Miles, Jeff and Tyler,
Since I live in an old house with sloping floors, I am obsessive about leveling the tanks. That one was as close to level as you can get. I am going to re-level the new tank and stand. The tank was 6 years old and never had any problems. It's actually the first tank I have ever had to replace, so I still consider myself lucky. I have another 45 next to it and it is fine. My theory is that since that was the one massively planted tank I have owned, once upon a time, the high intensity lighting weakened the plastic...
Al is taking in the broken 45 gallon in hopes of repairing it... I get too stressed myself, and would never be able to trust it.
I'm planning on starting out with 6 of Al's new specials and weeding them out as I go. It's about time that I cull a couple of runts from my last batch - too bad since the one RSG is a great looking fish, just never grew... I also have to get a new bulb, as the one I have is a plant bulb and makes the fish look funky.
I am definitely looking forward to Al's babies, as their parents are both awesome and I just think they will make a great cross. I guess we will see!
John
PS. Hey Al, feed those guys some extra! Let's get them growing!

Hey John;
You lucky guy...new tank...new Discus; life doesn't get much better than that. I'm sure Al's got some great babies for you.
I too have a couple of runts from my batch of juveniles but just am not sure what to do with them. They have good color and eat well but have not gotten much bigger than 3.5 to 4 inches. Maybe a "runt tank" or maybe not????
Regards, Lester
Thanks for the info. Good luck John.

Lester,
I have been considering a runt tank or at least putting my runts in my QT tank for the time being... I'll have to see.

John,
I am very glad that you got that new tank.... especially since I will be getting the old one! Have one where the cross support is broken. I finally moved that 55 g down stairs.
I'll be fixing yours though-well trying. I got a hold of a wire cauterizer from a friend, It heats a small filament to red hot that is perfect for melting cracked plastic. I figure I'll do that and then reinforce witha plastic strip, screw in place. Will it work... don't know.. but if it doesn't... The Rat Snakes have a new home, or I fill it half way and use it as waterfall, river tank, with maybe a pair of discus in it!
I know I am a pack rat!... Now who has a piece of furniture I can put it on! ;D

Cary,
It's good to be back!
It's amazing how the world goes on without you when you drop out for a few weeks!

Which reminds me...
Hey Al, you have used 45 gallon tank waiting for you in my basement. It's pretty clean - a quick bleaching and some repairs and you will be ready to go!

Gary, Its real funny how your curse works... If gary wants to visit you all, say yes, and let him.... he;s a great guy, but hide your pairs. If he see one he likes and askes for fry, they won't spawn again for months!!!
Two regular spawners, and now zip! From my understanding Gary has left a trail of these star struck pairs.... , I hear he even jinxed a pair of blue snakeskins at Cary strongs! ;D ;D ;D ;D
And I thought Cary had some strong magic!

Sorry Gary,
but the way you and Mench travel.... there might not be anymore discus to buy. If they don't breed because of that curse! lol

Gary didn't curse my Blue Diamonds, they had wigglers right after he was here...
Of course they haven't done anything since, so maybe it was a delayed reaction...

John,
Gary's curse is very specific. He has to offer to buy fry from a pair for it to work!
I was thinking though... There might be money in this. I wonder if that curse will work on people. Gary might just be the next fade in birth control... he just needs to offer to buy peoples children.... ;D of course if it didn't work, he'd either be in jail, or have to buy a bigger house! LOL ::) ;D
