View Full Version : shipping large discus
Hi all,
I just recieve a shipment of discus and the water looks cloudy. Not sure if it is due to sedation.
For those who ship discus, do you sedate the large ones prior to shipment? If you do, what chemicals do you use, just curious.
Runner, I do not sedate the discus. However, one must not feed for at least a couple days. I use Jungle Bag Buddies when shipping no matter what the size. This is a water conditioner and fish calmer. It is blue in color and resembles methylene blue. HTH, Joe ;)
Ditto. They must have used something other than Bag Buddies.
Jeff, Probably did not fast them! Joe :o

I have never sedated fish for shipping, just clean water and a dose of prime, I have never had any problems.
How ever when I recieved some wilds from Oliver at Belowwater they were sedated, and I was very impressed with not only the condition the fish came in but how fast they adapted to a new tank, just a couple hours.
I have talked a bit about this with Oliver and I have ordered a product to sedate adult fish when I ship.
I have always worried about large fish spineing holes in the bags even though I triple bag, thankfully this has never happened.
I do think sedateing has to be a lot less stressfull on large fish, just taking a nap while the are transported.

IMO I like the bag buddies and never had a problem yet!
I have heard of others haveing problems with them but I think they are useing a whole dose. I use a 1/2a pill per bag.
HTH you bag a fish!

Great info Cary. I have no personal experiance with this drug, however have been told you must be very careful with the dosage given the fish or it can be fatal. Has anyone used this before? What dosages are recomended?
