I need some help straightening out some the genetic terminology and how it applies to breeding discus. Does f1,f2 relate to were the strain starts its genetic pool. Ex like when the desired strain first appears in a discus would be considered f1. The young from that would be considered f2 and so on?? The other terms like outcrossing, throw backs and back crossing I need some clarification. Sorry if some of it seems basic.

Thanks

when you breed a pair the young are called F1's, since it's the first cross.

so you raise the young until they are adults and breed your best looking fish, the fry from these guys are F2's.

again, you raise the batch and pair off two have babies again, these are F3's.

now it is time for a backcrossing or outcrossing to strenghten the gene line. depending on whether you pick a wild or on of the previous parents is how it's referred. (i think) if i remember correctly, outcrossing is bringing in a wild to breed with the F3 whereas, you use the original parent from the F1's for a backcrossing.

i think i got this right, don't i?
