I have 3 Discus fish 2 I've had for about 1 week the other for about 2 days and they have been doing fine until today I noticed that the big one which is one that I had for about a week has little white spots all over his body and he looks like he wants to lay down. I don't know what would have caused this I keep the tank very clean with water changes once a week constant 84 degrees just today he came down with this I noticed. Please any help curing my fish is greatly appreciated.

Well I have been looking at some disease databases and it kinda looks like it might be velvet but not sure if it is what is the best cure?

Matt
I would use one tablespoon of non iodized salt for each ten gallons of water and bring the heat up to 92-94 degrees and maintain the salt and heat for a week to ten days, I would also be changeing water every day and replaceing the salt for the amount of water changed.

Put the fish in a hospital tank and treat it with salt, if you don't have one then treat all fish. 1 tablespoon of KOSHER/non iodized salt for every 10 gallons and bring the heat up to 92+F. 25% water change and replace the salt you took out. Wait four days and see what happens. It is very unlikely the fish has velvet. Others may have other ideas but IMO and experience this treatment will fix the vast majority of problems.

Good Luck,

So why do you think it isn't velvet and will raising the temp harm any of my other fish I have quite a few other non discus fish? I believe the disease was brought with this blue phantom placo I bought 2 days ago. When I bought the fish I noticed another smaller placo with this same disease in the same tank and I asked the clerk and he told me that it wasn't contageos well now my placo has it bad and he doesn't look like he will make it either.

Hi Matt:
You need to quarantine new fish for 4 to 6 weeks before adding them to your community tank to avoid problems just like this. It sounds like you have infected your whole tank now. You are correct many fish don't like salt and high temperatures.

Do you have an extra tank? If yes, put the discus and a cycled filter in it. You have been advised to raise the temperature and add salt. Cary has also suggested you use a dye like meth blue or malachite Green.

Change water every day - at least 25%. Add salt back for the water you replace.

Good luck,
Carol :heart1:
