OK, this is the 1st real thread...J/K Dkarq. What book would you guys purchase if finances dictated that only one be bought under $50 retail? This book would not only explain the basics for the beginner, but also would be applicable when he/she advances to breeding & rearing discus.

I'd like to mention that Ebay can be an excellent resource for cheap discus books relative to the LFS.

You have many to choose from for under your spending limit that will be very informative.

1. Discus for the Perfectionist: Jack Wattley
2. Success with Discus: Jim Quarles
3. The Discus-King of the Aquarium: Bernd Degen
4. Back to Nature Guide to Discus: Dick Au
5. Singapore Discus: Clifford Chan
6. Wayne's Discus: Wayne Ng

There are 6 to start off with but there are a few more.

If your not in any sort of rush many of these books show up on ebay from time to time. So even if your tastes run to the expensive side you might be able to afford them.

George gave you some really great books to buy. In addition to it, Theres a great little Discus book out , called "discus Fish , a complete pet owners Manual. , by Giovanetti. Its very weak on photos and strains, but as for the basics on keeping Discus Its good resource. Most LFS carry it. It was my first discus book, and I reference it all the time. It has a decent disease and medication section, which was written with the consultation of an aquatic biologist at the dallas aquarium.

The "save our planet" - Discus as a Hobby by Jim is also really good value for money, recommended buy.

Look into Diskus Brief magazines for more advanced discus hobby info.

There are a few books on aquabid right now that are well under your limit. In fact, you can get several at the same place.

I agree Al, for under $10.00 Discus Fish, a complete pet owners Manual, by Giovanetti is a good basic book. It's small, well organized and easy to find things in.

It seems that many of the books written in the 90's stress low pH and hardly mention regular water changes. Try to get recent books.

Handbook of fish diseases for $19.95 by Dieter Untergasser is really handy too. It has lots of pictures and flow charts. Several of the illnesses are illustrated by sick discus.

Hi Chirohorn:

The books listed so far are all very informative. I personally like; Giovanetti, JEQ, and Dick Au's books. I also like the latest Wattley book (I think it is called Breeding Discus for Beginners-can be found on Amazon.com).

Yes, Penang Discus by Shaifullah Yeng is the best discus book out. I don't know who has copies for sale - maybe Oliver Lucanus at www.belowwater.com ?
