View Full Version : brown flakey skin discus
i have a pair of discus that turned brown and there skin became white and flakey, like someone with dry skin.
any suggestions?
Hi jjf.
Whats your tank parameters? Stats on water changes? Sounds like you got a planted tank and are not doing enough water changes.
I would suggest turning your heat up to 90 f and lower your ph to 6 for 5 day's. Also add 3 tbsp salt / 10 gallons. Hope this helps. Do 50% w/c everyday.
thanks for your advice lion, i do not have plants and i was doing water changes everday. i was using tap water which is soft with a p.h. of around 8

Hi Lion:
What disease do you think jjf's discus has that you are recommending high heat and low pH for?
Carol, I too am very perplexed over Lions' recommendations. I have no idea how he came up with the assumption it is a planted tank. This is a slime coat /protozona condition in at my best guess. Not enough information was given to reach a diagnosis yet alone a cure. Joe ;)

It sounds like chilodonella (white flakey skin) to me and thats how I treated it in my tank. My fish were ok after that. Joe, if the tank were planted or not doesnt really matter. jjf you can try what I did or wait for someone els to come up with something. As you can see I am also new around here and will probably never know as much as some veterans on here.
jjf if your ph is 8, don't lower it to much at a time.
