Hard to find Hydro Sponges at various LFS around here. Did find several places that sell the Orca brand, but didn't know if the foam is dense enough to prevent CBW from embedding themselves into the media, as it doesn't appear as fine as the Hydro Sponge.

Anybody know?

I have one of those.....does the airline go in the bottom instead of thru the lift tube? If we are talking about the same filter...then the answer to your question is...No,CBW will not burrow into it. But it does pick up crap that will stick to it. Got squeeze or siphon the stuff off daily. Never noticed hydros doing this.
HTH ;D

Orca filters is all I use in my tanks,I like the weighted base...I haven't noticed any problem with the CBW.

they are good Bruce better made than hydro's imo, just dont use them in breeding tanks, exchange the orca sponge for the smaller pored hydro-they'll fit
