A quick Question should I keep the light up all the time?
do they need to sleep?

Henry,

I was hesitant to leave my lights on 24/7, but it's been over 6 months and the fish seem very happy.

It's very benificial to the small and growing discus with the light on. You can feed them day and night especially for the shift work or early riser hobbyist. They can eliminate the stress may have caused by turning the light on suddenly so that they can be fed before going to work. Food end up sitting in the tank for hours and fouling the water. You can actually see them grow. There's no food left over in the tank with the light on. It's one of my rules for growing healthy discus for a busy hobbyist with a full time job. You still can enjoy your discus when you come home 2 o'clock in the morning and will not miss a thing of their developement.

Been leaving mine on 24/7 now for a long time. My fish are fine with it and my electric company loves it as well :)

I tried it but found a problem, most likely because of the water I have. Brown algae grew like crazy when I left the lights on. I was wiping down tank walls every day and they were still covered the next. You'll just have to try it and see if it works.

I suppose lights can be left on 24/7, but is it a good idea? Discus are mostly active during the day and less active at night. I think they deserve day/night cycles... :D

I left my light on 24/7 until my tank was attacked by what I am calling the algae bloom of 2003. My water was Peasoup Green, and no matter how many water changes I did it was always green the next day. So, I have a lamp that I put next to the tank and the fish never get startled when I turn the light on and off. The bloom is under control now. I am now waiting for a product called Algone. I hope that by using this I will be able to go back to leaving the lights on.
If anyone has any experience with Algone, please let me know what you think.

hey,

i have never used Algone before, must be something new. How about adding some nitrate removing chips or a bag of nitrazorb to remove/reduce the amount of nitrate in your water? It might help since nitrate is a food source(along with light) for the algae. Hope this helps... :D

Leaving the lights on 24/7 for breeding pairs is no problem either. Ive done it for years.

You might want to try a phosphate remover instead of the algone. It's better to remove the cause of the problem then to just kill the problem.

I have still not recieved my order of Algone. But my tank is crystal clear now and I will probably pass on putting the algone in. Some folks on this site said that it would go away on its own and they were right. Thanks for the response guys.
