Hi Carol--My favorite tips from you: using the pre-filter sponge and wiping down the tank sides and bottom using paper towels.

Hello All

Great information - thank you Carol.

I bought my 55gal discus tank yestersday!

I have washed everything, filled the tank, conditioned the water and are now almost ready to add fish.

How long should I wait before I can add Discus in my new tank?
Will 6 juveniles fit comfortably?
Should I test the water for anything before adding fish? If so, what should I test and what should it meassure?
Can I keep any other fish with my discus? A pleco?

I would like to eventually breed my fish - but for now I'd just like them to all survive their new environment. Any other tips?

Thank you,
Yvette

Hi Yvette and welcome to SimplyDiscus

You must cycle yoru filter before you add the discus. Here is a link http://forum.simplydiscus.com//index.php?board=21;action=display;threadid=6357

6 juveniles will do fine all by themselves in a bare bottom 55 gallon with a fully cycled filter.

Read through the stickied topics in the beginner section too. IF you have more questions you may want to start a new thread

Carol,
Thank you creating this topic and collecting all the useful information for the beginners like me. One suggestion is the information on books. I know there are a few discussions on books but they are in different areas. Could you add some info on the recommended book? Thanks again.

Many of the older books contain outdated or even inaccurate information. The best new books are hard to find. My favoriite is Penang Discus by Sahifullah Yeng. Barron's Discus Fish (blue cover - sold in most fish stores) is a good beginner book. Jeff Young (discusfarm.us) has a fairly new book, Exotic Discus for sale - you'll love the pictures.

Hello. I am new to the site and I don't raise discus but I am interested in everything to do with aquarium. I do have a problem with my tank though, and as I've seen how knowledgable all you folks are, perhaps you can help me. I have a 10 gallon tank and I cannot get my ph down no matter what I try. It's always up around 8 - 8.5. The water from my tap has very high ph, so I've been using bottled water with a neutral ph to do 1 - 2 gallon water changes every other day. I've used a whole can of discus buffer in about a week (it treats 55 gallons) and still no change. I've even treated the bottled water with the discus buffer before I put it in, and I test it and it's around 6.5 - 7, but I will test my water in the tank afterwards and there is no change. Could it be a rock I have in there, or the wood I have in there, or what? I'm so baffled. I've raised cichlids with my Dad since I was little and have never had such a problem with ph.

You must have hard water or something in the water leeching calcium. Get a GH and KH test kit. It is very difficult to lower the pH of hard water. Some bottled water is mineral rich too. REad through the water section for more information.

Reverse Osmossis (RO) filter. Go to the water section for more information.

Hello Community! I'm thinking about purchasing Discus. I have a new 65 gallon hex tank, with white silica sand bottom. I'm waiting for my test kits to come in the mail. Once I get my levels in range I would like to buy 5 or 6 small Discus. I've been reading up a lot for the last couple of days. One thing that I find mixed opions about is having other kinds of fish in the tank along with the discus. I have 5 Hatchets, an angel, a pleco, and a couple small loaches in a quarantine tank that I would like to add to the hex tank along with the Discus. Can I do this? I just need someone to tell that this is OK. Can I please keep my other fish in the same tank? Any input would be welcome. Thanks, Jim

If you are new to discus I would not try to grow out juveniles in a community tank with substrate.

New to this forum and just found this thread. Great links for a beginner to get started.
I am not a beginner to fish keeping but I am to discus.
Just bought 9 from Hans a few weeks ago and put them in my 125 soft water 0 ppm 6.0 ph tetra planted tank with driftwood. I'm hooked! Will be buildings a fish room soon and will give more info later - research coming together

Hi,

I'm new to SD and Discus but not new to fish keeping. I'm setting up a new 36" * 18" * 24" discus BB tank with drift wood.

This thread is awesome, thanks a lot for putting all links at one place. saves a lot of time for a beginner like me.

Just one question. Im planning to add some cardinals n Rummynose. Is it better to add Tetras first or discus first (2"-3")to the tank after cycling.

Currently tank is cycling with AC 500, a sponge filter, driftwood, heater.

Rash.
