View Full Version : So depressing

Hi Peeps ;)

Just recently I've been seeing quite a bit of activity in my pairing tank :bounce: I really should be getting all excited right? Well...... I have a known female in the tank that was in another tank previously with a known male that apparently wasn't fertile so I pulled her and dumped the male.... (that was a mouthful)

Well last night I noticed what I thought was a Male cleaning the cone along with the known female..... then I noticed that male in question was making dry runs...... >:( >:( >:( >:( that was really heartbreaking :'(

This same male in question 4 days ago was protecting eggs with a rose red female :-\ go figure eh?

This is a pic of what I thought was going to be a pair.... the proven female is the one in front.

Have any of you ever had a male that made dry runs ??? This is definitely a new one on me :-\

Maybe I'll have better luck with these two ::) these are siblings from the pic above. The one on top is starting to show some red spots on the body :o I guess that wild blood does some really strange things.....

This is also siblings..... a proven pair.... This pair is still in the learning process. I have 2 small spawns I pulled at day 4 and day 5 of free swimming. 1 spawn I saved 8 and the 2nd I saved 24 and all are doing great (I haven't lost 1 baby yet ;D ) hmmmm.... I must be doing something right.... hehehe..... The pair now has (I'm guessing here) maybe 100-150 free swimmers that attatched last night ;D wish me luck guys ;)

So any how...... My daughter brought up something strange to my attention...... tell me what are your thoughts on this......
When a Discus makes a dry run... is it really a dry run ??? Could it be that the Discus are secreting something to help the eggs to stick to the spawning site ??? ..... I dunno :-\

Thanks for peeking ;D

Beth,

Sorry you're having such a problematic and stressful time. Admit it, you just wanted to show off some more pictures. lol.

Your fish get more and more beautiful everytime you post them. I bet they look wonderful in person. Let's see some pictures of the fry you've pulled :)

I don't know if this is the same but I have one fish (with questionable intelligence) that rams the female off of the cone and then tries to fertilize the bare cone. I guess he's just a little impatient ::)

Here ya go Ryan.....

This is the first day trying out the BH.... they've had nothing but bbs and CBW's until today.
I believe this group will be the first to go outside into the swimming pool ;D

I know there are a couple culls in there but I don't want to cull any just yet.... I didn't want less than 8 babies so the aggression can be spread around ;)

This group is 2 weeks old and are still on bbs along with the CBW's .... I gave them a little BH today for the first time and they're not real fond of that stuff :puke:

Beth - Great pics. As your pair's get older I'm sure you are going to have better luck.

As for the dry run - I used to have a black angel male that did the same thing. He would make dry runs sometimes 2 days before the female got into the mood - ??? - he did turn out to be good male though.

Ahh the heartache of gender challenged discus....

Beth if she really frustrates you, feel free to bag her up and send her this way...

Defying the odds...... atleast I hope so anyway....

The proven female finally put the eggs down and the other, sex unknown made runs like a male should ;)

I covered the tank after the spawn in hopes the eggs would still be there (heavy traffic area in the house where the tank is).... From what I can see in the dark tank, there appears to be no fungus and maybe some black dots after 48 hours ;D So just maybe the one in question is a Male.... I guess I should know one way or the other in the next several hours if the eggs are still there ;)

Thanks Guys ands Gals
Beth

BTW ..... Al

It's hard to grow Great Discus unless you start with a Great Supplier like Cary.... oh yeah! and ofcourse a Great Source of CBW's from Dan sure doesn't hurt :-*
