Now thats an ouch.

I had forgotten how painfull it was to look at all of the fish that Cary put down when he discovered cholera in some of them. That last shot of the can happen to you occured a long while back.

Yes I know which webdealer your talking about. Hopefully this doesnt spoil you on ordering imported fish. I know of 3 people that import fish that I would buy from and actually have. There is also 2 other people that I would consider buying from.

Tim Thomas http://www.usdiscus.com (have fish now)
Joe http://www.enchanteddiscus.com
Mike Wells http://www.adiscusdream.com (will be ordering soon)

Bruce http://www.majesticaquatic.com (havent heard any problems about him)
Mike Hepner http://www.hepsdiscuscenter.com (havent heard any problems about him)
Roger

By not hearing about problems Im referring to things like your referencing.

Peace,
Roger

Gary,
I am very sorry you went thru this. In reality though, These problems are not restricted to any part of the country thanks to overnight shipping. Its sad but you should always be careful of where you buy discus from, and always quaranteen( not that this would have helped save these fish- but if you had many tanks ... :'( ). Even being careful, its not a definite.

Its safe to say there have always been diseases out there, there always will be. Sometimes you can catch it and cure it , sometimes you can't. The longer the QT the better, or even better..use a lab analysis.

Market demands exceed what a breeder can produce, so they bring in or trade stock. When they do this, There is always the chance that they will bring something in. Sometimes they will not even know they have, others they learn it painfully well, as some breeders have recently found out. Some will euthanize the sick fish, others will attempt curing them, still others will pass them along.

Its why I am a firm believer you need to deal with people you can trust, build a relationship. Even if it means not getting the hottest newest strains, until they have them and are breeding them. At least then you can feel partially secure.

Next time you get fish, buy an extra and send it out to that lab. Just to be sure. It may be an expensive precaution, but I can imagine you are feeling very distrustful these days.

Hopefully you will be able to start over with healthy stock from a reputable source.

Good luck let me know if I can help,
and take care ,
Al
