I just got a TDS meter from Randal, I have well water that goes through a water softner. The TDS meter read about 1000, my fish seem to be doing very good in this water. If I want to start breeding I understand this water may be to hard for the eggs to hatch. I have an RO unit in our house that is for making drinking water only (It does not produce many gallons a day). I may be able to mix some of it into a 20 gallon high, I want to use for breeding. My question is what kind of a ppm reading do I need to get down to?
Thanks
Harry

If your water goes through a water softener I suspect your high TDS reading is from the sodium content rather than the total content of minerals.

Try the RO reconstituted with RO Rite or something similar.

For breeding you need a conductivity of between 80ms and 120ms. I think TDS is x2 to = conductivity so 40 tds = 80ms of conductivity. So between 40 and 60 on your TDS meter would be ok for breeding :)
