After reading and hearing how much Discus like earthworms, and how good for them they are....how do you get yourself to stand at that kitchen counter with a knife and start the chopping? I cringe at the thought when I look at the blood and gunk on the driveway after a rain and a car tire had run over one....so is there a best way or what?

You can freeze them first ;D It really works

LOL Sheri. how about you look for the tiny thin small ones that wont need chopping? or..get a small cup and a pair of scissors and just get going. chop chop chop. not hard..you will adjust.
Its all for the love of the discus.
I dont actually use them too often as too much work hunting them down. And even though i can chop them..i dont touch worms. yukky. i prefer to just find little ones and feed them to my wilds or bigger fish who will eat them.
blackworms are far easier.

hmm maybe i'm not feeding the right kind. i got some night crawlers once and chopped em up. fish wouldn't touch em :( . i just ended up letting the rest go.

red wrigglers is what you want. which are true compost worms.
the only problem with collecting from outside is you have to be sure there were never any pesticides used.
most people get a compost bin and raise them.
most have found it takes them a bit of time to take to therm. once they do..they devour them.

:bounce2: :bounce2: Shari, I fed red wrigglers, aka ordinary earthworms, & my discus loved them. I found the easiest way to chop is in my hand with scissors. :o :o If you are at all squeamish, you would find it tough, they do squirm when cut. I'm not at all squeamish & am definitely into easy!! You can cut to whatever size for the size discus you are feeding, & then you are still feeding live food. I got lazy I guess, & didn't keep the culture going, so now I feed CBWs & H.BWs. The worms found outside are too large, fat & need cleaning. lol, Dottie ;D ;D ;D

I feed daily 6 e/worms to each pair , it is excelent food for bringing fish in prime breeding condition

Wow - thanks for all the replies and so fast!
I have tried the red wrigglers/blackworms - the Discus just watch them fall and look at me like 'WHAT' !!! Surprised my wilds ignored the blackworms too!
I think I like Carol's idea of freezing them first! haha - yup looking for the easiest way! haha!

why do you have to chop them? I thought it is just wash them and drop them in. Let the discus tear them apart?

Do them eat more if you chop them?

My fish wouldnt eat them till I mixed them in my beefheart mix once they got started they love them.my fish are still small 3" to 3.5" if I put to big of a worm in the tank they will give up on it and Ill have to vacume it out . Im an avid fisherman so choping up worms is second nature.
